Joe Retaliation; Gangster Squad; A Good Day To Die Hard; Gravity; The Great Gatsby; Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters; The Heat; Her; The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug; The Hunger Games: Catching Fire; Identity Thief; The Incredible Burt Wonderstone; Instructions Not Included; The Internship; Iron Man 3; Jack The Giant Slayer; Jobs; Kon-Tiki; The Last Stand; Last Vegas; The Lone Ranger; Man Of Steel; Mama; Mud; Nebraska; Now You See Me; Oblivion; Oldboy; Olympus Has Fallen; Out Of The Furnace; Oz The Great And Powerful; Pacific Rim; Philomena; The Place Beyond The Pines; Prisoners; The Purge; Red 2; R.I.P.D.; Rush; Safe Haven; Saving Mr. Banks; The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty; Side Effects; Snitch; The Spectacular Now; Star Trek Into Darkness; Stoker; Thanks For Sharing; This Is The End; Thor: The Dark World; Trance; Warm Bodies; The Way Way Back; We’re The Millers; What Maisie Knew; White House Down; The Wolf Of Wall Street; The Wolverine; World War Z; and The World’s End.

A note to say that I haven’t seen some of the major Oscar-bait films like August Osage County, Before Midnight, Blue Is The Warmest Color, Blue Jasmine, Frances Ha, Fruitvale Station, Inside Llewyn Davis, Labor Day, Lone Survivor, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, and Short Term 12, or any animated film other than Frozen, so none of those films feature in any of my nominations.

Blockbusters are fine. Plenty on my list too. I need a little bit of both, as it were. Curious to hear franz' list this year, though. We both seem to enjoy films that aren't always the biggest American productions.

It's coming. I might try and put it on my blog and post a link here.

I usually do end up seeing a handful of the year's more acclaimed smaller pictures, but not until a while after the fact. I tend to limit my big screen expenditure to films that really justify it with spectacular cinematography/imagery/effects.

It's interesting that you say that, because a film like LA GRANDE BELEZZA by Paolo Sorrentino is a typical artfilm in many ways (with its references to Fellini, Antonioni, Bunuel, Resnais etc), but at the same time ripe with 'spectacular cinematography/imagery/effects' that can best be viewed on a big screen.
    I am extremely serious.
  3. I'm very much looking forward to LA GRANDE BELEZZA. While I have a copy of it, I notice it's getting a brief cinema release in Sydney in late January. smile

I won't quote the whole thing smile. I liked seeing GRAVITY in so many of your categories. I think it deserves not only to be nominated in all of those categories, but to win them. I haven't seen nearly as many films as you have this year, but I haven't seen anything even close to GRAVITY in quality.

Me too! Although I have no idea anymore what I've seen in the first half of the year.... La Grande Belezza is on my list but running times are not very good here, too early during the day (because it's such a long film). As for the best film and experience, I'd go with Gravity too.

    You're Next? What's this about.

You're Next is a horror / slasher film Demetris , directed by Adam Wingard and starring Sharni Vinson amongst others . During a family reunion getaway , the Davison family comes under a sadistic attack. When Crispian Davison brings his new girlfriend along to celebrate the wedding anniversary of his parents , the family’s evening together is shattered when a gang of mysterious killers begin to hunt the family down with brutal precision. Unfortunately for the killers however, one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back...

For me it was a brilliant horror movie. It's smart , clever and stylish and has lots of black humor. It was a breath of fresh air amongst all the terrible slasher movies out there . Sharni Vinson was great as Erin. She was smart , fierce and an all around bad-ass. smile If you're a fan of the genre , give this one a look you won't be disappointed ... wink

  4. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Nerve so high on the list - really enjoyed that one, and it felt like a rare film that really understands and engages with the sort of social dynamics that are created and fueled by social networks. Cool score, too - the sort of all-electronic effort I can really get behind.

The high marks for Jason Bourne (thought it was boring as hell) and low ones for The Jungle Book and Civil War (both solidly crafted pieces of entertainment) surprise me a bit though.

Also, how do you manage to watch 162 movies and still not see Kubo and the Two Strings? Get on that!

I've seen it, but only THIS year. Didn't care for it, I'm afraid. Looked and felt cheap.
    I am extremely serious.
  5. Is that a reaction to this particular film or do you feel similarly about all stop-motion? I can assure you that the immense amount of work it takes to produce a feature-length stop-motion film with that level of detail is everything but "cheap".

I know. But the execution felt cheap to me. But the major point was the lack of any involving drama (the little there was, felt clichéed and forced). That's also a form of 'cheapness' (cheapness of content). It felt like something that could be presented as kiddie TV.
    I am extremely serious.

My favorite movie in 2016 was by far Deadpool. :P I like to be entertained when I am watching a movie, and that movie did just do that!

Pretty good film, yes. Also has one of the best scores of the year (yeah, I know I'm in the minority on that one).
