About time one of the all time great composers had his own thread, particularly as FSM's latest release is a 2 CD set of Land Of The Pharoahs cool

This is a great score and I'll definitely be ordering this one.

Is that the Jack Hawkins/Joan Collins film?

I think Tiomkin's masterpiece was The Alamo. It's one of the best Westerns ever, and the music was perfect.

Tiomkin was once asked how he could write music for Westerns, having been born in Russia (the Ukraine, if I remember correctly). He replied that the Steppes were just like the prairies..... punk

Love Tiomkin's The Alamo which has one of the most heat rending melodies ever in The Green Leaves of Summer.

'Pharoahs' is a great score too, check out sound clips at FSM.

This is an excellent starting point with Tiomkin as this was his first major score and an excellent one. Three more that have been recently released are Guns of Navarone, DOA, and High Noon. If you can find a copy of the RCA/Gerhardt release of his music this gives you a wonderful sampling.

FYI, Silva's excellent Tiomkin set is very cheap from Silva on Ebay.

If you missed this before, don't pass it up. The equivalent of $20 for four excellent discs of music...it's too gooda deal to pass up:

I personally skipped over FSM's release because I'd just acquired the 2-CD Pantheon release of the score, which also includes Tiomkin's Rhapsody in Steel. Great companion to Pharaoh. But yeah I adore that score.

I'm still missing The Alamo, but I heard it in the movie and I'm extremely eager to find a copy.

I think High Noon is another Tiomkin staple. Fantastic score. I was so giddy about the new release.

  1. The recent talk about Tiomkin raised my curiosity. I must admit I don´t have any of his scores. Great to have a friend with a massive collection nearby, so I I just started listening to Land of the Pharaohs.

My first time for this score, and for a Tiomkin score in general.

    Wow - time travel flash!

I expected something classic, of course, but this is really very raw stuff, and there´s two hours of it... we´ll see...

It's also out of print; the Silva set is excellent too and a very fair price, as I posted above.... GBP 10 for four discs of Tiomkin goodies? Much more extensive, too.

Ah I think your description of it matches exactly my first reaction when I heard the Soundtrack Library boot all these years ago! It was also my first Tiomkin at the time, and all I could think of was: "raw."

It is, in great part, a very raw score, to be sure, but the structure of its themes will indeed start to seep in. "Building the Pyramids" especially will probably win you over with its sheer power.

But yes, truly a different score for a different time.

Of course, Gerhardt will never be topped, but the Silver offers a more variety and a greater extensive overview of Tiomkin's work and it can't be ignored, IMO. I wouldn't be without either set.

“I can't believe how exciting the recording is! I've had time for one listen and I am blown away! In the action music, the orchestra sounds like it is on fire! I totally see why you singled out the brass for praise, but the entire ensemble plays beautifully. It might very well be the best thing that you, Nic and the orchestra
have yet done.” (Frank K DeWald)

“This recording of The Alamo is everything Dimitri Tiomkin would have wished for in a faithful reconstruction of his timeless score.“ (Olivia Tiomkin Douglas)

Mmmmm...there is a very fine 70 minute recording out there already, which is still readily available.
Not sure if this one particularly warrants a rerecording.

That said, the original release does include a little dialogue in a few tracks (which never bothered me much, to be honest). And now 160 minutes?...phew... that's a LOT of music...
Not sure if I'll get this. Maybe if it's really inexpensive (because it IS a great score).
