A revised look at Rombi's fine moment that is "ANGEL", one singularly beautiful orchestral gem. For anyone interested, here's the link:

My favourite theme of his would have to be the twisted love theme from JEUX D'ENFANTS, or LOVE ME IF YOU DARE.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

BIENVENUE CHEZ LES CH'TIS (CD)
Philippe Rombi
Although living a comfortable life in Salon-de-Provence, a charming town in the South of France, Julie has been feeling depressed for a while. To please her, Philippe Abrams, a post office administrator, her husband, tries to obtain a transfer to a seaside town, on the French Riviera, at any cost. The trouble is that he is caught red-handed while trying to scam an inspector. Philippe is immediately banished to the distant unheard of town of Bergues, in the Far North of France. Leaving his child and wife behind, the crucified man leaves for his frightening destination, a dreadfully cold place inhabited by hard-drinking, unemployed rednecks, speaking an incomprehensible dialect called Ch'ti. Philippe soon realizes that all these ideas were nothing but prejudices and that Bergues is not synonymous with hell... 2008

In the liner notes from Philippe Rombi’s latest score, Un Homme et son Chien director Francis Huster describes perfectly how Rombi’s music is: " it addresses the heart. It is in the bowels of the film and in the depths of the soul." He says that Rombi’s extraordinary sensibility places him on the level of Tiomkin, Steiner, Morricone, Rota, Legrand …
For me, Rombi is still a relatively "new comer" and has a body of work that is still in progress. I guess only time will tell but from what I hear, this score moved me like many others he penned music for : Joyeux Noël, Swimming Pool, Sous le Sable and Angel, amongst others. This is an orchestral piano based score that also features violin, flute and guitar. The strong points here are, once more, his memorable themes and orchestrations. Like Georges Delerue did, Rombi composes, orchestrates and conducts his own scores and it shows in the final product. Un Homme et son Chien is a truly beautiful touching score and a talented composer to keep watching.
It would be interesting to hear what he can do in other genres like action, western or fantasy films.

I just found UN HOMME ET SON CHIEN as a download from amazon for 8.99. That's a bit cheaper than SAE is selling it. Of course you don't get the "jewel" case (why do we call plastic a jewel case?) or liner notes.

I'm old-fashion music colector, so I hate digital releases...
Happily UN HOMME ET SON CHIEN is released old-fashioned as well... -
