A friend asked me to make a playlist of music for a long drive through the mountains (they go skiing next week). It doesn't need to be majestic or big orchestral all the time. That's the harder part.
Can you help me?
I was thinking of Seven Years in Tibet (Main Theme), Three Years Later from Vertical Limit, Ski Chase from OHMSS, ..Kazoo -

Also, can't go wrong with "Rudy".
The opening cue (after the fanfare) to "Star Trek: Insurrection" also works nicely. As well as the cue "In Custody":

And for those early morning hours where the sky is orange and the mist is in the air, any number of soft Delerue scores wopuld be fantastic.
And remind him to be careful when going around bends he can't see ahead of. Cars can suddenly stop due short-notice pull-offs, and break and you won't see it until too late. Remind him to check his brakes before heading out.
I remember this one place years ago where a family was vacationing, and a large boulder fell from high up and smashed the car into the raod several inches, of course killing them all instantly. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

White Fang 1 or 2
Call of The Wild
Eight Below
Balto
or Family Adventure films that involve Animals in some way like Fly Away Home

All great ones and another, if obvious selection from OHMSS is this grandious and Mahleresque piece from OHMSS, mountain music doesn't come too much more sublime than this...

I just made an account to say this: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, by Jeremy Soule. You've got atmosphere, grandeur, the occasional big exciting action moment, peaceful tracks, it has everything. Although maybe the reason I say it is because so much of the game world is snowy and mountainous and now I just associate that music with that sort of geography. Plus there's almost three hours of it, so it'll last for a good chunk of the trip! -

It doesn't have to be music specifically written for mountain scenery, a little imagination can point out many tracks.
Off the top of my head...
The Search from CONAN
Rescue of Dances With Wolves ( is this a great "mountain" track or what! )
Candlelight from UNTIL SEPTEMBER
The Journey from ON DEADLY GROUND
Through The Window from COCOON
Main Titles from VERTIGO
All those are either sweeping, dramatic, pretty or ethereal. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

The "Main Titles" from Elfman's SOMMERSBY always connotes mountainscapes to me, in the same vein as Howard Hanson's "Mysterious Mountain" -- the latter of which is loved by many here, including myself.I am extremely serious. -

For the people who posted names of whole scores, what individual tracks are fitting the mood for this?Kazoo -

I don't know them all. Trying to find them on Spotify. Never heard Sommersby. The first track that Justin linked to is quite cool, and it doesn't sound like cold mountains.
I must have the Hovhaness track here somewhere (I won the cd from Tom some time ago!).Kazoo -

"The Eiger Sanction" (Williams) ?
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired. -

Here's the main titles from SOMMERSBY:

Here's the third movement from Hovhaness' "Mysterious Mountain":

But I really recommend the whole piece. It's one of my favourite classical pieces and -- as Timmer can attest to -- reminiscent of Vaughan Williams' pastoral style.I am extremely serious. -

It's a good score, but not one that cries out "mountain music", despite the subject matter. It's more in the vein of what I call 'baroque jazz melancholy' (also evident in Goldsmith's THE LAST RUN).I am extremely serious. -

Hard to say. The whole Skyrim album just puts me in a wintry mountainous mood! I guess a few of the cues that always make me picture mountain vistas could be:
"Distant Horizons": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGp5kjHNhJY
"Frostfall": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnPRTwsne54
"Kyne's Peace": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gC-UsVHtg8
"Far Horizons": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga8KbMcUfm8
"Standing Stones": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eAQK64CuLY
"Aurora": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OGGggY6pAo
"Wind Guide You": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lyld0ekydd0
Most of these are purely atmospheric (though "Wind Guide You" does climb some pretty grandiose heights at times--haha, see what I did there? ) so you really have to kind of sit back and immerse yourself in it. And it really does help to have played the game - when I first listened to the score before playing it, I was reasonably impressed but a little bored at times; after playing the game (more than is healthy for me, really...) I fell in love with it. You do have to be patient though.
Anyways, yeah, let me know what you think, and what ends up on the final list! -

I really liked the Skyrim stuff Edmund but I can imagine being relaxed, sitting on a hill top chilling out to that rather than travelling to it ( I haven't played the game and just took it at face value as music ).
Very enjoyable. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Spine melting! Here's another Hovhaness piece that is very reminiscent of Vaughan Williams and perfect for the awesome "spirituality" of nature...

I just remembered an album we played while driving through the highlands of Scotland, it's not a film score but it's brilliant driving music with scenery....
Mike Oldfield - INCANTATIONS
Much better than driving to film scores ( IMHO ). Listening wise I always found scores better as a static experience, a great viewpoint plus earphones, it's something I've done in many great places from Wales to Switzerland to Nepal to Thailand etc.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

I also think the cues for the Norwegian mountainside in Patrick Doyle's HÅKON HÅKONSEN (aka SHIPWRECKED) have a very appropriate "majestic" mountain feel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9oE0nZV … 583FFEE1A1
For a more downbeat, moody atmosphere, try Vangelis' "Ask the Mountains":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EBYf3lYSEg
In the same vein, try a couple of cues from the two volumes of LONELY PLANET.I am extremely serious. -

Roman Polanski's FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS has a lot of snowy mountain scenes, a few of which has Polanski himself skiing to a castle.

Some of the music takes place in mountains and snow scenes. In fact, the first seconds, "Do mi ah" vocal, are used in the opening of the pilot where a Mounty is walking through the snow covered mountains in search of a bad guy.
Great TV series, by the way. Most especially those first three or four seasons before it got cancelled. when it came back, it just wasn't the same. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -
