Now they score their first film by the Tron:legacy director who's gathered a shitload of big names.

    OBLIVION

Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. VERY interested in seeing what kind of score M83 produces. I always thought his albums sounded like alternate soundtracks for Michael Mann films.
  2. It's not a first time director, Demetris. His debut was Tron: Legacy.

The movie is partly filmed on Iceland!

Love M83. As I have pointed out a few times already, they have some really cool music in their last album. Search for tracks like Intro, Outro, Midnight City, ...

Yes, Bregt, from what i've heard i liked them too, outro is by far their best piece so far though, for me. Interested to hear what they'll come up with for the film; and the movie seems very promising.

  3. This is the piece that first caught my attention, "Open Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun"

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlQibJfn0KY

Similar in spirit to the piece used in the CLOUD ATLAS trailer. The full track is actually more than twice as long as this.

  4. I'm really looking forward to this one as well. "Outro" is fantastic. I thought the rest of that album showed that M83 has great potential composing music for film.

I look forward to hearing this.

M83 have a personal distinction with me as having composed a synth track that touches my soul and can actually bring tears to my eyes...

    Crikey! shocked

I need to get me some of this.

    Maybe not now though.
    It's quite estrangingly melancholic.

A little. They're in the same league of Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, perhaps Sigur Ros, but have much longer tracks (often 10 to 15 minutes) and some fantastic buildups, though without exploding the whole thing. Often use movie fragments or dialogues too.

Yeap, listening to them frequently lately and i like a lot what i hear, this is why i ask smile Thanks Bregt, i tried getting a bit into Mogwai in the past but wasn't ready yet, maybe i'll re-try. Would you also recommend Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky?

Of course! Sigur Ros is my favourite band actually, and I'm sure Thor and Timmer (and Tintin) are big fans as well. Explosions in the Sky is nice but I don't listen to it as actively as Sigur Ros for example. More background music, which it lends it to much more actually. Sigur Ros takes you away from what you're doing if you start it in the background!

Absolutely! I love post-rock in general (although it did take me a while before I was "hooked").
    I am extremely serious.

Love Sigur Ros as well, achingly melancholic most of the times. Highly late-in-the-evening music.

My favorite of them (if you don't like this then, well, just stop): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QM1QdRpFxU

Thanks! What would you say is a representative piece from Mogwai that if you don't like it, then you'll probably won't like the rest of their compositions either?

This beautiful! Which album is it from?

Also, whilst we are on the topic of this kind of music, this all reminds me of the recent (well, last year's) trend in film music: FALL ON YOUR SWORD?

The album has no name and the tracks don't have either. Later the band started to refer to them with names, that are still rather unpronounceable.

I don't think I'm known well enough with Mogwai's music to answer that, but I'm sure Bregt will? I would say their contribution to The Fountain anyway.

Try their album Mr. Beast, I think their most popular one and also my favourite. It includes the track Auto Rock, which was used in the Miami Vice movie I think.

The Oblivion score sounds interesting! As far as post rock goes, I find myself really liking only one song by most of the "big" post rock bands. I end up being put off by a specific synth effect that overpowers the rest of the soundscape or the length (the songs tend to move too slowly for me).

I really like "I Know You Are But What Am I?" by Mogwai, but nothing else I've heard from them jumps out at me, and they have a lot of material to wade through. Any more personal favorites for them?
