I don't keep track of which forum the participants come from. But if you are an interested composer or know anyone else here who might want to have fun with this, tell them to participate!

This is an excellent idea! I dabble in a bit of writing from time to time (more like sketches on the piano), but certainly nothing good enough for a challenge like this. But I am interested to see what sorts of things people come up with. I presume we will be able to hear some of the successful pieces? Or just the winner?

Indeed! We're really lucky to have him. Which brings us to today's update:

The first place winner will receive a signed copy of the full score (as printed for the scoring stage) for one of Abel Korzeniowski’s pieces. The winner gets to choose which! Many thanks goes out to Abel for offering and agreeing to offer this great treat.

Oh and there are 18 days left till the deadline, so I hope you've all been busy writing.
  2. Days on the calendar are closer than they appear.

I'm still waiting for the 90-piece kazoo orchestra with Gerrard vocals, and missing mixing bowls. ;-)

Our next set is written by Mikko Ojala. It’s a whopping 45-page read, but the level of detail and depth he goes into is most appreciated!

  9. I don't know why he didn't post here, but there's a new contest up:

New year, new ideas, new music! Lots to look forward to, but lets begin, as always, by summing it up for the uninitiated:

The Composers Challenge is an initiative designed to help emulate the experience of a film composer for participants. Through a long process, the composer is given a clip and asked to score it. His/her music is then passed along a panel of adjudicators made up of prominent film music critics, composers and other professionals in the industry. The work is then reviewed and feedback is offered. The scores from the panel are then tallied up to set a victor to the competition. It’s a process in which every composer learns and an experience from which all participants have something to take out of.

When a musician is asked about creationism, Hadyn’s iconic The Creation is immediately quoted. And while its easy to list a bunch of oratorios, and other religiously-themed pieces of music, the idea of creation is something that’s manifested itself all across the different eras of orchestral music.

The idea behind this challenge is to see how the idea of creation inspires you. You will be scoring the famous creation sequence from The Tree of Life (popularly known for using the Lacrimosa movement from Zbigniew Preisner’s Requiem for my Friend). The aim is to challenge participants to think beyond the conventions of typical film scoring, and explore their style along the lines of what we hear in concert music today; music that speaks more for itself than relying on the visuals to tell its story.

Here is the clip to score:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqarrBNX8GU

You’ll be given approximately 2 months to score this clip.

Tentative Deadline: Friday March 21, 2014

The members of the adjudicators’ panel will be revealed over the course of the week.

In the meantime, let’s brush up on what to do, shall we?

    INSTRUCTIONS:
    1)      Email me at kkalaisan@hotmail.com to let me know you’re interested in participating in the challenge.
    2)      Score the clip and email me the piece (approximately 5 min) by the deadline.
    3)      Wait patiently for more news. Check email or this site for updates on a regular basis.

I hope to see many familiar names and many new candidates to return for what will be a cool new chapter to the Composers Challenge. For any questions or inquiries, please feel free to send an email to kkalaisan@hotmail.com.

  10. Update on the new contest:

    Hey!

How’s the writing been going? The date is fast-approaching, so I thought I’d introduce you to our panel of judges and special guests joining us this time. A shout-out goes to all of them for agreeing to join the initiative and show their support for helping raise another generation of aspiring composers. Their time is invaluable and to take that out of their schedules to contribute to this challenge.

So here it goes. Sitting on our Judges Panel are:
    Dylan O’Neal
    Johannes Ruckstuhl
    Leon Williett
    Mikko Ojala

And for our Hear From the Pros feature, we will be graced by the feedback and advice of renowned composer Benjamin Wallfisch!

Check out their pages on the Judges Panel page:

  11. Another update:

    Hey guys,
I apologize, many of you may be waiting for today as the deadline. But due to some unforeseen circumstances, the deadline will be pushed for the last time (I promise) to Friday May 16, 2014. So you guys get a few extra weeks for those who are still behind!

I apologize if there was any inconvenience. Don't hesitate to email me any questions/concerns.

Looking forward to hearing your work!

    Cheers,
    Kalaisan K.

  13. My thoughts:

    #1:
    Rating: ****
I liked a number of the ideas and there were a couple of terrific builds ups, but I felt the piece never reached the heights it could have, especially after one of the build ups.

    #2:

Had a nice serene feel to it and a wonderful open, but it just sort of fluttered out and the ending felt at odds with the onscreen imagry.

    #3:

I liked how the piece drove forward, but other than that it didn't do anything for me.

Didn't like the music and felt it did nothing for the imagry.

    #10:

I like how the composer experimented with such unusual orchestration/instrument choices, but I felt it was just wrong for the imagry.

There's something about this unusual approach I like, especially the unexpected opening. I can't say whether it fully meshes with the visuals though.

    SUMMARY:
So, I'd say entry #1 is the winner and entry #12 would be second place. Entry #4 was a low point in the whole thing.

I entered, but I guess KK didn't get my entry, 'cause it's not there.
