Jedi, if you don't understand what's seriously WRONG about Tyler Bates in every possible ways imaginable (not just musical, but also ethical), then by God you're free to enjoy his superior musical talents and nobody is going to disturb you; ever again.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

I still don't understand all the Tyler hating...if you don't like him, don't listen to him!!! I like his music...it has suited the films he has worked on, and for the most part, they have all been enjoyable. 300 is vastly more listenable than Titus to me...Slither and Dawn of the Dead are great horror scores, Doomsday is an enjoyable romp. I am looking forward to Watchmen...both the movie and the music.

I don't want to repeat myself, so what Jedizim says I'm saying too wink

I liked his take on Roy Budd's classic GET CARTER theme.

I urge you though, under no circumstances should you ever watch anything other than the Michael Caine classic.

  2. I will judge this score as it is supposed to be done

In the movie and then on CD, NOT ranting about the uglyness before you have heard or seen the big picture of it

I think everyone who has little faith in Bates should really try Get Carter. It's a hugely enjoyable score.

True, it was definitely non Bates like in tone

I thought that the clips sounded fine! I've had it down on my "list to get" for a couple of days now! A re-evaluation is called for.

    Like mine?

    http://www.moviemotion.nl/content/revie … lling.html

It's in Dutch, but let me summarize: it's crap wink

My biggest complaint is how he tries absolutely nothing new or edgy for such a monumental 'literary' comic. He basically uses every trick in the book and, as Jon said, as loud or big as possible, but absolutely nothing substantial. It really feels like a hollow listening experience that gives no satisfaction on any ground (except for a few promising moments with electronics). 2/10
  9. Is it bad because it's very derivative? Or because it's just another drone-fest?

If it's just not very original then that's not too bad?

It's not a drone-fest; he uses orchestra, choir, guitar and electronics. So the ingredients are there, he just doesn't do anything with them. It's like letting them all shout for a while to get a 'bombastic' sound, but no real writing to back it up, and then complement it with electronics that's mainly going nowhere. It's underdeveloped, hardly melodic and overall very shallow.

Or Justin Boggan taught him. Hard to say.

This seems to be a common complaint (certainly to my ears). All the ingredients for something interesting is there but he just doesn't have the talent/inclination (or direction) to actually do something interesting?
