    Programme of the concert

    Riz Ortolani
    I Giorni dell'Ira
Addio Zio Tom (Oh My Love)
    Mondo Cane

Addio Zio Tom was used in Drive recently. Great performance of the singer. I also liked I Giorni dell'Ira.

    Alexandre Desplat
    Rise of the Guardians (Suite)
    Twiligt: New Moon (Main Theme)
    Carnage (Main Theme)
    King's Speech (Main Theme)
The Painted Veil (Morning Tears & From Shangai to London) - conducted by Desplat, electric cello by Vincent Ségal
The Ides of March (Behind The Flag & The Candidate) - conducted by Desplat, electric cello by Vincent Ségal
    Argo (The Mission)
Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows (Suite)
    The Ghost Writer (Suite)

Highlights for me were The Candidate and The Ghost Writer. The former was amazing because of the performance of the electric cello. Odd way to play the instrument. Desplat was sort of dancing while conducting, very passionate. Also Carnage is a great piece.

Here's a video (Dutch). Includes a little part of Danna's first video speech (because he did a second after he won a second award)

Benjamin Wallfisch and Laurent Eyquem too
  1. This year was not one of the toppers, mostly because I cannot connect to Alexandre's Desplat music like most of you here. Besides, I wanted someone new (like hopefully Thomas Newman in the upcoming years). However, I was mostly surprised by The Scorsese concert, amazing performances and a diverse selection of the more emotional selections and the thrilling more bombastic pieces.

As for the rest, always a highlight, the people we seem to meet again and again during these festivals. New and old seem to find their way to my beautiful home city Ghent. Hopefully many will return the upcoming years, including the composers wink

Luckily no Torture tour here, though something tells me that will be on the program again next year cheesy

To me the WSA concert was good, perhaps not as memorable as other years but I discovered lots of Desplat scores that I definitely want to get acquainted with. There was too much of Harry Potter, not that it was bad music, but too many climactic pieces following each other, it seemed like it would never end. Really enjoyed 'carnage' and 'The Ides of March'. Meet & greet benefitted from a later start and as usual a nice treat by the festival; Alexandre Desplat, Thomas Newman & Ortolani very friendly and there were so many composers incognito in the crowd. The dinner, drinks, company fun as usual. I didn't go to any of the other concerts but the WSA -for what is considered a modest lineup- still delivered.

Why not Thomas, David and Randy Newman for the next year in Ghent? And besides, a special dedicated to Alfred Newman

I didn't come to Ghent this year because of other commitments (and because the line-up didn't attract me greatly). But I am mightily pissed off at losing the chance to meet Thomas Newman - that would have been cool. If he signs on to a future festival, though, I'm a goer.
