NP: Iron Man 2 - John Debney

It's much, MUCH better than I remember it being, and much better than IM3. It's too bad that Debney wasn't allowed back.

The IM3 theme has been stuck in my head for months, in a fun way. I never remembered a thing from Debney's score. I enjoy listening to the action music from IM3, whereas Debney's stuff was mostly boring wallpaper to me.

Oh well. I'm glad someone can enjoy IM2.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

Debney is a bit TOO rightwing for my taste, but as you say -- I try not to let that come in the way when I listen to his music (which I generally enjoy, pastiche or not).

NP: Alex Cross - John Debney

It's a remarkable score only by virtue of being the most electronic-heavy score in John Debney's repertoire, so far. It's extremely functional, if both effective and unobtrusive in the movie. It's a very modern sounding score, and the synth library at work is very much more advanced in every way, more than anything Alan Silvestri has to offer, which makes me sad a bit.

So that's why Passion of the the Christ was such a phenomenal work.

NP: E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial / original release (1982) - John Williams

I just read a rather interesting thread over at the FSM board about what influences went into this famous score. (Les Baxter "Joy", Howard Hanson "Symphony No.2 ", Dvorak "Dumky Trio")

An iconic score, whatever was featured in the temp track! Still, I find such things interesting.

    Volker

I find the above pieces to be only vaguely related to any themes in E.T.. Musical cousins perhaps.
I just can't see how Williams should be sued for borrowing from Baxter! Hardly a direct lift there!
I can hear sections of Hanson's symphony perhaps but not a rip in the way Horner has been know to go about it. Maybe I just don't have the musical ear needed to recognise the connecting patterns.

Didn't he have some kind of epiphany during the scoring of Last Temptation of Christ?

Debney and The Last Temptation? wink

He's been always a religious (yes, Catholic) Republican, though except Facebook he never really makes political statements in the public and even there it's very laid back.

I've noticed only one. It's a short piano motive for Alex Cross' character/family/reflective moments/etc. It's surprisingly melodic, but only more than a typical Harry Gregson-Williams material for a Tony Scott film, that is minimal in style, but moderately effective and emotionally evocative.

You mean Passion of the Christ. Peter Gabriel provided the score to Last Temptation.

NP: Ned Kelly - Klaus Badelt
This is really good. A bit monothematic but a wonderful orchestral score.
I had forgotten about this score for a long time, so when playing it it was like a new score to me, although I did remember along the way of course.

Most likely overworked on that production. I mean, I'm Christian too, but that's a bit over-the-top for my taste. It is not so much his Christianity that bothers me, though, but some of his other Republican views. I can't remember where I read some statements from him -- whether it was facebook or some interview -- but it was a bit too conservative for a moderate left winger like myself.

Indeed! I get confused by Jesus films.

Is Passion worth watching or is it just Jesus torture porn?

This was the first Badelt score where it made me 'listen up' so to speak, very enjoyable and quite Barryesque ( which is probably why my ears pricked up in the first place wink )

We hardly see his name anywhere now, has Hans Zimmer cast him into the phantom zone?

I loved it; I've seen it 3-4 times. A lot of people didn't like the violence, but that's why it's called the Passion.

On the other hand, Last Temptation was merely okay.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed by Last Temptation either but then, it is a very long time ago that I saw it, maybe I'd have a different opinion now? I keep meaning to watch Passion but never got around to it, I've no excuse really as my best friend has it on DVD for loan.

He started his own studio, following in Zimmer's footsteps by training new composers. He had been doing a lot of smaller films but doesn't seem to have done anything in 2013. He has his own store where you can buy or download for free all his post-RC scores. http://store.klausbadelt.com/

He's done a lot more than I thought? But where's that A-list he used to be on? That's no opinion on the music which I not heard any of but he's definitely been cast into film obscurity.

DVD? It's a beautifully shot film, so for that it does at least deserve nothing less than 1080p. tongue

That said, this film is particularly disturbing given its graphic nature and that a large proportion of the world believes what they watched is a history lesson. rolleyes
  5. Wow!

    World population: 7,1 billion
    Christianity: 2,26 billion astimated (Wiki)

Probably not all of these 2,2 billion are believers in a traditional sense. Me for example, I am registered as protestant Christian for family reasons, yet I have strong leanings towards atheism. Many people in Germany habour syncretic believes. ("I am a Christian but I believe in transmigration.")

Muslims hold completely different views about Jesus.

So that is hardly the large majority of the world. wink
