I know most of you can't understand Norwegian, but what do you think of the selection? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

ROBIN HOOD is a superhero? A hero, yes, but not a super hero. Just like Batman is NOT a superhero. Neither is THE PHANTOM. Probably should have just called the show"HEROES." In an case, I can't wait to hear your first ENGLISH program.

As I mention in the programme, ROBIN HOOD is not a superhero, but the musical language employed in it would influence many superhero scores in the years to come. That is why I included it.

As for Batman and The Phantom, you're right that they aren't heroes with supernatural powers, but they fall into the more general category of comic book heroes. I guess I could have called it 'comic book heroes' instead, but there you go....

As for the first English programme, I think I may do one at No. 5. So a couple more in Norwegian first.

It's not an matter of opinion. A superhero has supernatural/superhuman powers. Batman, The Phantom and Robin Hood don't have supernatural/superhuman powers but do heroic deeds.

Of course, even if you don't understand Norwegian, you can always sample the cues themselves.

I should also point out that the NEXT episode WILL be in English. I just haven't decided on a topic yet. Hmmmm.....

  1. I don't understand more than single words of what you are saying. Yet reading your texts I do get the gist of it. Is that the same with German for you, Thor?

Ouch. Underwhelming response on this, the latest episode, at CT's facebook page. About 22 views as opposed to an average 75 for most (the Elfman webcast still holds the record with about 250). Don't know what happened.

Took me about 10-12 hours to put it together.

Hopefully, the next edition -- in English -- will create some more buzz. Otherwise, this is all a bit discouraging.

Thanks a lot for the goose bumps during the last track. Loved the cast!
  3. Thor, I like this! I like the topic, Iove your selections and I basically like to listen to you speaking. Or narrating ... or lecturing. At times you can be quite soothing. Did you ever consider narrating bed-time-stories for little children?

So ... you spend 6 minutes lecturing on historical compositional techniques before the first note gets played. You and I, we are both teachers, we have a tendency to do that. BUT: The internet is no classroom. People are all over the net while listening to your potcast, they don't just sit there and stare at your site for an hour in awe and wonder. You have to compete for their attention.

A little less talking, a little more music, a little more modulation while talking - what do you think?

But I really liked your potcast. I hope you don't mind my remarks. smile

Thanks for the remarks, Volker. I really appreciate stuff like that. My model for the webcast is the Norwegian NRK radio -- the culture channel P2 -- which is more serious and less 'happy-go-lucky' in their treatment of cultural issues. But you're right; I could loosen up a bit; I do that in the episodes where I can speak my native Norwegian, but when I speak English, I tend to be less loose and more concerned about speaking correctly etc.

So I definitely have LOTS to work on! smile

Another solution I've thought about is to have more interaction with guests -- that automatically loosens up the mood a bit. The second part of the Elfman episode was an example of that. But it would be awkward for two Norwegians to speak informally in English, so then I'd need an international guest -- maybe someone from maintitles even?? wink

    Why not?
Maybe even host a debate or two?

    I can see it now:
"The wonder of insane quantities of fortississimo brass"
"Should a proper soundtrack CD be three times as long as the actual film it supports?"
"Norway: glaciers and madly expensive alcohol, and why they should stay out of the EU forever"

    The possibilities are endless! biggrin
