Celluloid Tunes contributor Mark Burgess selects his OWN favourites of 2018 in a companion piece to our webcast episode (and probably closer to this year's fan favourites than our episode was):

  1. I just read the Celluloid Tunes article by Mark Burgess on his favorites of the year that Thor posted and I've been struggling to put my finger on what I just can't seem to love about Michael Giacchino's non-animated scores (Jupiter Ascending was my latest try and it's just okay) and Mark said it perfectly when he said they're "sometimes bombastic and 'busy', perfect for big screen action, but difficult to process musically, and with more than a little thematic repetition." Wow, that's exactly how I feel! They're busy! I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone! And since I've also been steering clear of new scores by Giacchino because of that, it's nice to see him get back to what he's best at Incredibles 2. smile So maybe it'll also be a good reset for him to do something different in his next live action film.

Mark's selections and preferences are very different from my own picks (which you can hear in the episode I mentioned three posts up), but I do agree on that particular sentiment in regards to Giacchino.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. I’m sorry I missed yours earlier Thor - a widely varied and interesting collection of scores in your top 10! I’m especially a fan of Mary Queen of Scots and Max Richter has taken up new residence as one of my favorite current composers - while I haven’t heard too many, I love Hostiles (and now Mary Queen of Scots). I also love The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and I can think of no one better than JNH to blend with Tchaikovsky and it’s a joy to hear their mashup. New to me was Helgi Sæmundur and I really enjoyed the track you shared from Stella Blómkvist. And I thought the track you featured from Papillon was just superb - hadn’t heard that yet either and will have to listen to the rest now! Anyway, a very nice episode! smile

    Cheers, Filmscoregirl! smile

PAPILLON is a complex score -- from the beautiful choral stuff I played in the episode to other weird wind, percussion and voice effects to mirror the constant struggle between isolation and freedom in the story. Extremely well done, I thought.

  3. Nice, show, Thor. I enjoyed it, as always. It's nice to go through your top 10 every year because you always include a bunch of less well-known scores. I really like several of your top 10 and honorable mentions. Your show convinced me to give Tolkien another chance, and convinced me that I don't need to give Motherless Brooklyn a chance smile

Good show! I had expected more electronic eighties scores. wink

No, fine selection. Number one is a bit of a surprise, it's very good yes, but to me it didn't jump out. For me the Motherless Brooklyn was the best surprise on your list. I really like Pemberton, but hadn't heard about it before. Great!

But yes, 2019 was a bit off and on.

Would you like The Day by David Martijn? A Belgian series which had quite some international attention too.

I loved both the big, muscular Americana and the energetic rhytmical bits (which seemed more interesting to me than most other ostinato-driven scores these days). It has CHARACTER and MUSICAL PRESENCE. Then again, I also really like the film, as the hardcore Emmerich fan that I am.
