What kind of format do you need? TRUE/FALSE? Wrong One Out?
    What are the parameters?
(And what defines "pop"? Can I for example pop in questions about Bing Crosby or Dean Martin?)

All of that is absolutely fine, basically anyone who's had any kind of popular hit, though it can be obscure facts about very popular artists etc.

True/ False, Wrong One Out etc are great ideas.

    HELP NEEDED smile wave

I've been asked to step in as quiz master at the pop quiz I occasionally attend, they have a rotation of about six people who regularly host this quiz on a Tuesday night and one of them is my good friend John who, due to late night work commitments can't do it next Tuesday so has asked me to replace him, I've agreed and, of course, I do get payment for this.

I'd like some help with my "beer break" round ( Halfway through the course of 60 questions I give out a sheet of questions for people to fill in while I have a break ), my idea is to simply match up rock/pop/music stars with films they have had parts in, for example...

    FILMS:

    Performance
    The Hunger
    The Rocky Horror Picture Show
    Moonstruck

    And now match the STARS:

    Meatloaf
    Cher
    Mick Jagger
    David Bowie
    Michael Jackson

You'll notice that I've thrown in a 'red-herring', I intend to give a list of 25 films and 30 stars, 5 of whom are the red-herrings.

What I want from people here is a few more obscure ones so as it's not too easy.

    Thanks in advance.

Memphis Belle - Harry Connick Jr
The Man With The Golden Arm - Frank Sinatra
    The Hunger - David Bowie
    Beat Girl - Adam Faith
The Dirty Dozen - Telly Savales ( he had a # 1 in the UK with 'If' )
    Tank Girl - Ice-T
    Fight Club - Meatloaf
    Crossroads ( 1986 ) - Steve Vai
    Runaway - Gene Simmons
    Freejack - Mick Jagger
    Boogie Nights - Mark Wahlberg

    True Grit - Glen Campbell
    Carnal Knowledge - Art Garfunkel
    The Aviator - Gwen Stefani
    Point Break - Anthony Kiedis
Escape From New York - Isaac Hayes
    Dream Girls - Beyonce Knowles
    The Cell - Jennifer Lopez
Deep Blue Sea - LL Cool J
    Hellboy 2 - Luke Goss

And here's the 5 'red herrings'...

    Matt Goss
    Dean Martin
    Britney Spears
    50 cent
    Sammy Davis Jr

Note: I forgot to mention that ALL the films will have release dates in brackets, for example, Britney Spears who also starred in a film called Crossroads ( 2002 ) will be one of the red-herrings, so people will have to pay attention to those dates not to get the wrong answer.

I'm way too late for this, as you've already got an excellent list. But lots of things to choose from. I think Harry Connick Jr. had more of a presence as the bad guy in COPYCAT, but MEMPHIS BELLE is probably more famous. And where's Tom Waits? He's a pretty decent actor too with quite a filmography. DRACULA or DOWN BY LAW are possible options.

Here's a couple off the top of my head.
Not much, but I'll try and do better later on. WHat's your deadline?
    =================
    TRUE/FALSE:
The Buggles' 'Video Killed the Radio Star' is the most-played video on MTV.

(answer: FALSE! To date, Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer is the most played video on MTV. 'Video Killed the Radio Star'is third. It WAS the very first video ever played on MTV, as well as the millionth one on February 27 2000.)

    Q. What was the name of the pop band Brian May and Roger Taylor started?

    a) The Never Men
    b) Smile
    c) The Cross
    d) Queen

    (right answer: B) Smile.
Farrokh Bulsara joined later as an erstwhile fan of the band, and changed his name to Freddy Mercury, and the band's name to Queen. The Cross is the band Roger Taylor was in in paralel with Queen. I made The Never Men up)

    Q. What is the Dandy Warhols' lead singer's name?

    a) Courtney Love-Taylor
    b) Taylor Courtney-Taylor
    c) Courtney Elizabeth-Taylor
    d) Courtney Taylor-Taylor

    (right answer: D) Courtney Taylor-Taylor)

    TRUE/FALSE
The Beatles had TWO left-handed members

(answer: TRUE: both surviving members Paul and Ringo are left-handed!)

Martijn, I love yer man kiss

I'll use all of those, and I didn't know Ringo was left handed ( ( I think everyone knows Paul is ) and I didn't know the Taylor and May answer either.

p.s. Freddie Mercury's real name is coming up in the true/false round I'm doing, your Buggles question will join it, the Beatles left-handers I'm going to turn into a question rather than true/false but thanks for pointing me the way cool

The beer break round is complete now Thor, yes, there were a lot I had to leave out, for instance, David Soul of Starsky & Hutch fame was a huge hit here in the UK with a number of hit singles and albums but not many people seem to remember that he starred as a corrupt cop in Clint Eastwood's Magnum Force, still, I have plans to turn this into a question.

p.s. See Martijn's post to see the kind of thing I'm now looking for, any help is still appreciated.

Thanks Martijn but no rush. As soon as I knew I wouldn't be doing the quiz I just came to a full stop, in fact it gives me enough time to put more effort in, perhaps a couple of "sound" rounds ( guess the live music clips, guitar intros are popular, that sort of thing ).

So, a last call to help...

I'm making the beer break round film score related so what I want are as many film scores as you can think of that have been written by POP MUSIC composers...

The Family Way by Paul McCartney, Death Wish 2 by Jimmy Page and Dune by Toto all immediately spring to mind.

    biggrin beer

You've more or less filled it! I think I'll change LEGEND from Clannad to Tangerine Dream ( and an extra point if anyone is clued up and knowledgable enough to put Jerry Goldsmith ), Clannad will become Robin of Sherwood ( believe me, people get funky at being mis-led ), I'll add the ones I mentioned and also add Nick Cave & Warren Ellis for The Road.

    Thanks Martijn beer

Anyone reckon somethings been missed out?

  2. How popular was the band Pop Will Eat Itself in the UK? If it was, I'd add any work by Clint Mansell to the list, people may associate him with Requiem for a Dream.

If you assume that people may be knowledgeable with the history of the band Yes and their members, something by Mark Mancina (Speed, Speed II, Bad Boys - that was a fairly popular soundtrack album in 1995) and Trevor Rabin (Armageddon, both did Con Air). Zimmer could join with pretty much anything, especially that he was quite a popular session player and even produced a Sally Oldfield album (Strange Day(s) in Berlin), Ultravox, Krisma, The Buggles and the lot.

Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo would be too nerdy?

Neil Young - Jim Jarmusch's The Dead Man.

    Now listen to this

Marylin Manson (with Beltrami though) - Resident Evil biggrin

  3. And Tim, how can The Killing Fields be omitted here??

Not quite "pop", I know, but I think Oldfield did have a resounding name back then (of course, he did).

Thanks Pawel, I'm definitely going to add Marylin Manson and Neil Young to the list, I'll make a YES question easier by adding one of Rick Wakeman's scores to the list and I've just remembered Keith Emerson's Night Hawks and Pink Floyd's More.

I'm guessing those who started out in rock/pop, but are also more or less full-time film composers - like Elfman, Mansell, Knopfler etc. - don't count?

A couple more off the top of my head:

    Stewart Copeland - WALL STREET
Trent Reznor (& Atticus Ross) - THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Johnny Greenwood - THERE WILL BE BLOOD
Pink Floyd - ZABRISKIE POINT (more famous than MORE?)
Cliff Martinez - SOLARIS or TRAFFIC
Tangerine Dream - RISKY BUSINESS (their most famous film score to the public?)
Billy Corgan and Mike Garson - STIGMATA
Eric Clapton (w/Kamen & Sanborn) - LETHAL WEAPON
    Elton John - THE MUSE
    I am extremely serious.
