Today i was heavily surprised. Totally blown away by ATLI ORVARSSON's BABYLON A.D. which i am playing non stop since morning. To say i actually expected something like that from someone like Atil would be a huge overstatement but thankfully my ears are always open and neutral through first listens. It still carries basic elements from his sound over at VANTAGE POINT but overall I never expected to hear something like that in this score for this movie and i'd REALLY, REALLY love to see the faces of those tossing Atli on the beginning of his career now. wink

Listen, and listen good. Imo, this is what modern film music is lacking these days. Thank God that there are exceptions.

It's nice, but only as nice as a rehashed version of "Equilibrium".

It's similar to Vantage Point in that there are too much ambience/underscore and not much development. But it's more orchestral than I had expected which makes it better than Vantage Point's near-pointless synthesizer heavy score.

Kind of like a little brother to Transformers with the male choir and deep strings.

Not too sure about it; Transformers had its fair share of snozziness too; BABYLON A.D. too has a lot of underscore but the orchestral requiem choral-orchestral rides are better than several passages in Transformers, imo. More refined, more well-worked, denser arrangements and orchestration, more organic sound.

Yeah there are very good choral pieces, but buried under tones of underscore.

So true. There are so much more boring parts in Babylon A.D. compared to the available good parts. A shorter, more concise, album would have made for a better listening experience. Transformer had a more consistent listen in spite of its derivative character.

Agreed. It´s a (rare) case where 25-30 minutes would have been more than enough. Actually, besides the first tracks the rest is pretty boring and generic ambient music.

Transformers has plenty of themes; you can like them or not; you can find them generic, derivative and RC-esque, but they are developed through the score and almost every tracks features one or more themes.

I liked what I heard when I saw the film. I'm interested in reading some reviews of this score, if there ever are any.

Vin Diesel can ruin anything, from a good cover to a movie.

Ok, I´ll give you this one. The proof he can do it right. Sadly his filmography shows that he doesn´t want to.

Why surprised? Too much, too little? I loved the score, glad Jon liked it too. It's a breath of fresh air in the fields of soulless modern film scoring and the choral / string ostinati parts are both intense, enchanting and heavily entertaining. Very well-written and performed as well.

  2. Is it his DAUGHTER or his SISTER? The vocalist on the score? biggrin

I'm pretty sure it's his daughter. His full name is actually Orvarr Atli Orvarsson (Atli being his middle name) - so the little girl would be Orvarrsdottir - the daughter of Orvarr!
  3. Exactly! That's fascinating that this tradition is still used!

BTW, I wonder how do they pronounce his name in Hollywood, they MAY have issues with it...
