Surprised that nobody ever talks about this composer...I've had his score The Miners' Hymns for about a year and loved it. Its kind of like Arvo Part, (not exactly though) but more minimalist. Now I'm listening to his album And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees for the film "Varmits" and the opening track is gorgeous. I think Thor would like his music.

It sort of reminds me of Steve Roach's Structures from Silence.

Yeah, loved Miners' Hymn. Here's my comments
    http://www.maintitles.net/forum/discuss … ent_245112

Saw Prisoners yesterday. Very good film, very tense and nailbiting at times. Not an action movie though, so why it is marketed like that I don't know. (Also James in his review says it is an action movie). Love these kind of films, that are slow paced, take their time, to uncover the mystery (2,5 hours). And it doesn't mek it look all too obvious all the time. At the end, I heard some youngsters saying "but what a stupid ending"... Sigh. wink

The score is very dark but shines now and then when Johannsson brings in the whole string section. Otherwise it's a dark affair with lots of low tones and sort of organ. Works very much on the mood and listening to the score again, bring back the movie atmosphere. It's on Spotify, as is Miners' Hymn, and a lot of his other works.

Ugh. Neo-Romantic left wing historic revisionist-nostalgic false sentiment.
Revering an ugly and deeply divisive social struggle in starry-eyed hagiography.
    Dislike.
Even if it IS all brass.

    Hm.
I'm feeling particularly politically combative today.
I should possibly ease up on the coffee intake.

Did I mention all Minimalism composers should be rounded up and locked in a disused pony shed where powerful speakers pump in nothing but Wagner, Smetana, Handel and Bach all day?

    It WAS very important!
Worked out quite nicely in the end, too.

Incidentally I agree! As I write every single of my posts on this board in a foreign language, every single one of them is incredibly important!

  6. The Theory of Everything is a absolutely wonderful film, the score by Jóhann Jóhannson really help complimenting the emotional intensity of the film. Fully deserved his Golden Globe, won't be surprised if he picks up an Academy Award as well, although he's got some tough competition
  7. My thought on SICARIO by Johannsson. It's dark... and I love it. A bit like chocolate.

I love Johannsson, but that was a very underwhelming score, IMO. The film looks intriguing, though.

I'm sure most of you have seen the trailer for Denis Villeneuve's upcoming sci fi ARRIVAL by now. I think it looks very promising, even though the ideas seem to be an amalgam of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, SPHERE, INDEPENDENCE DAY, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and more:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ennvCITY1F8

The music in the trailer is allegedly a mix of Jóhannsson's original material and more generic trailer stuff by Confidential Music and David James Rosen.
    I am extremely serious.
  9. It looks promising... though, as the trailer went on the sillier it started to look. It looked like a stylish cross between Independence Day, Close Encounters and Alien.

Curious to hear what JJ will do with the score.

"Stylish" is the keyword here. But not only in a general sense, but in a Villeneuve sense -- if he manages to put his own stamp on it, it doesn't really matter that the source material is an amalgam of other sci fi concepts.

Apparently Jóhannsson has now been taken off the Blade Runner 2049 project completely.

    http://icelandreview.com/news/2017/09/0 … ner-sequel

Jóhannsson not able to comment on this, due to "contractual obligation". So obviously, this was not in mutual agreement nor a scheduling thing (also, I thought Blade Runner might've conflicted with his Mother! schedule, but that film now appears to have no score). Also, it seems the film has been completed by now (its rating and 163 minute running time have been announced), so Jóhannsson was probably already off the project when the previous announcement happened.

I know I recently said I didn't like the idea of clashing musical styles on the project, with both Jóhannsson and Zimmer strong composers in their own rights (Wallfisch considered a protege of Zimmer in this respect - I have yet to be properly impressed by him or hear any kind of distinct voice of his), so in a way with now Zimmer and Wallfisch steering the ship towards a unified voice should be an improvement over the previous announced situation, but the whole project seems to become a musical mess. I don't know.

I would've been properly excited if Zimmer had been announced from the start, and maybe they will still be able to pull something impressive off in the limited time (I take it Jóhannsson's work will probably not feature anymore, or very limited, and Hans and Wallfisch have created a significant amount of the score for this 163 minute film within this relatively short amount of time).

it's going to be another dunkirk case most probably, where daddy z will write a an opening cue or a 'motif' cue and wallfisch will fill the rest of the gaps with copy pasting here and there (he's good at that, filling all the Z gaps wink) hopefully it will have a bit more music than sound design, well more than dunkirk at least.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
