  4. In the Heat of the Night

I'm torn about my situation, because on the one hand, I haven't seen really MANY classics, on the other hand, seeing them at this moment of my personal and intellectual development lets me really appreciate what these classics really are.

This is one of the best crime dramas I've EVER seen in my life. Everyone is at the top of their game and to think that it took it up to 1967 for a cinematographer to actually consider SKIN COLOR when it comes to lighting a movie is on the one hand surprisingly odd, on the other hand symptomatic about what changes happened in the American society at the time. Kudos to Haskell Wexler, one of the best American cinematographers, for pulling this off.

Also the irony written inherently into the story: when a white rich man gets killed in small-town Mississipi the cops arrest the first black guy they see just to realize he happens to be the best homicide cop in Philadelphia...

Brilliant film, BRILLIANT performances, though if I could imagine something differently, I'd actually make the anti-racism stronger by seeing things from the "white privilege" as it's called perspective just to find out that Tibbs is actually human and makes the whole cops of "Jerkwater, Mississipi" (yes, paraphrasing First Blood) even more stupid, but otherwise it's definitely one of the best films of its kind I've ever seen.

Congratulations to EVERYONE who made it. Poitier is great, Steiger is great, some great cinematography to boot (the first sequence, the "suspect chase", just about everything)... I love it.

Finding an unwatched Alan Partridge clip HAS to be up there with discovering the lost Doctor Who episodes, the first Meliés shorts or the Lost Ark.

A bit disconcerting, but I've been impressed by every single outing in the TERMINATOR franchise so far (all four films as well as the Sarah Connor tv show), so I'll wait untill it's here to draw final evaluations.

I loved the 'mechanical'/real texture-like feeling of Mostow's third, as well as the lush photography and setpieces of McG's fourth. So no -- it doesn't end with just the first two films for me.

    The End

I think I went a bit crazy for the fourth one, because I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic stuff. But having caught a bit of it on TV recently, I'm inclined to agree. I was wrong. One of the most cringing aspects was Kyle Reese as a kid and his equally annoying child sidekick. Fuck off. The third I don't even remember.

The Terminator is a perfect sci-fi film, and Terminator 2 is a near-perfect sequel. End of, as you say.

I really enjoyed Terminator: Salvation, not in the least because it (finally!) had a bad T-100 again (even if it only was a CGI cameo).
Which was the main reason why I really thoroughly disliked Terminator 2: Judgement Day at first viewing, with Arnold's action hero status having reached such heights he couldn't be cast as a bad guy anymore (plus, you know, Edward Furlong. Ugh.)

My view has softened somewhat since, but I still think it's an overly loud and silly film at the end of the day.
Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines was mainly a waste of time, with an utterly ineffectual Terminatrix (at least Robert Patrick was a REALLY scary killer), but I loved the ending, which I think took real guts.

This film...I dunno. On the other hand: love Emilia Clark love (and MAN, she's well made up to resemble Linda Hamilton here!).
    I'm sure I'll see it.

She's not exactly hard on the eyes, but she's a bit cute to play Sarah Conner. She may surprise me of course, whenever I get round to watching it, but she would be far from my first choice. (Your future wife, Michelle Rodrigue, would be far better suited if you look past the Latino features.)

The new trailer for the new Mad Max film. I have to say, it looks... quite entertaining.

So will 2015 be remember as the year of sequels to 80s/90s cult films? Jesus. What else is there to come? uhm

It looks absolutely spectacular, and all my disappointment that Mel isn't returning (how cool wouldn't it have been to see an older and weathered Max in the harsh landscape?) has been replaced with excitement.

    This is going to rock!
