  1. Sounds like UNDER THE SKIN will be an interesting score in context, although I suspect the idiom will be a bit alienating for many around here:

When this director last worked with a composer, the result was BIRTH.

Thanks Michael. Very eager for this (and for other natural reasons other than cinematography, music and film wink)
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Don't know how this will work in the movie, but as a separate listen it's pretty tough; it's a constant small percussion instrument hitting from piece 1 to end, the same rhythm (stressing every quarter's and half's), isocrates and various viola sfx and clusters above. Certainly a very brave approach for sure.

  2. I agree. This won't be a favourite around here. Strangely hypnotic however. 'Love' is very interesting.

  3. I'm listening to this at the moment and I'm liking this a lot.

Good to hear something that's different, interesting, challenging and listenable.

I've been looking forward to the film for about a year. Having heard nothing more but the iTunes samples I've decided to listen to the score once I've seen it. Upon hearing the samples I'm sure this couldn't be more emotionally detached, but it must also be exactly what the film needed. Brave, creative scoring that's probably more something to be appreciated for its technique, fascinating as it can be, than really enjoyed?
  5. Though an appreciation can also be enjoyed?

I see my ironic suggestion that this score is roughly as far removed from anything melodic, lyrical, sensitive, wonderous and (to me) enjoyable as is humanly possible was interpreted as me confusing a dead French composer with a young pop writer from Surrey.

Apologies, I should have been more clear.

Certainly, and I will most likely enjoy this. But I'm sure I'll appreciate it more when I know the context and when it's gotten an emotional frame.

Definitely. This score certainly has me wanting to see the film. A lot of the usual scores, you can work out what's going on in the film a lot of the time by the tone of the music. Here, not at all!

Needs to be seen within the film for sure 'cause on cd, it's slow, pompous, monotonous, constant.

"Pompous"? As in self-important or pretentious?

Well, I've seen the movie and thus heard the score in context, and both disappointed me. I really was looking forward to it. The movie succeeds in being creepy and detached indeed but it is also weird and the last scenes and its ending are rather bumpy and uninteresting. I cannot put my finger on it but it became all rather uninteresting after a good start. The music is very good though but also limited because of the movie.

I'm not sure why this movie ends up in so many Best Of lists. Those who have seen it, please enlighten me.

  12. It's a film that deliberately holds you at a distance from the main character, so it's never going to be a movie anyone loves. (In fact if any film from the last year relies on 'negative capability', it's this one.) For me, I found its twist on fairy tale motifs thought-provoking, and the fate of the main character enough of a payoff to the journey there. The film's fusion of existing film styles is also very interesting to watch for someone whose had a go at making a film. Nobody makes movies like this, and that can't help but affect the way it comes across. While Chris Nolan basically shoots HBO coverage in IMAX, this filmmaker is searching for a new way to distil story in a frame.

Some highlights: Her connection with humanity seems to shift on meeting the 'monster' -- in a way, he draws her into humanity more than anyone so far, despite being the most monstrous in appearance; the pitiable image of seeing our unknowable hero suffering a medieval fate (tarred and burned at the stake, like so many women before her).

True, it's a very unusual movie. I think that it distances me too much to appreciate it more then I do now. Thanks for your feedback.

  14. I see in one recent review of Pablo Larraín's movie, Jackie, starring Natalie Portman, that Larraín "drowns his film with a cacophonous score by Under the Skin composer Mica Levi that burrows uncomfortably deep" with another review of the film accusing the director of "leaning a little too hard on (Under the Skin composer) Mica Levi’s warped string score. Don’t be mistaken, Levi wrote a terrifically interesting score, but Larraín’s slight over-reliance on it".

Definitely interested to hear this one. Hope that it gets some kind of a release.

My colleagues absolutely loved the film (they saw it in Venice), and since Larrain's NERUDA is one of my favourite films of the year, I have high expectations for this.

As for the score, I think the description sounds tantalizing -- looking forward to hearing it in context more than on album (as with UNDER THE SKIN).
    I am extremely serious.

As with Under The Skin, if the music is particularly 'attractive' away from the film, then I will seek the movie out.
