Didn't get a chance to watch the Brazil v Croatia match live but caught up with the highlights. Looks like all the ingredients for a typical tournament are there in the first game: goals, defensive errors, own goal, penalty kicks, great goals, dodgy decisions, player theatrics. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I have the feeling that this tournament is going to be (again?) dominated by criticism of the officials/poor decisions and drama-queen footballers trying to get a result from cheating through amateur dramatics rather than from footballing skill. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Watched the game last night... WHAT'S UP WITH THE SPRAYPAINT?!?!?!? Had not heard about that prior to the game, so when the referee suddently whipped out a spraycan I was really baffled! Guess the referee was chosen on basis of his street art skills and NOT his good judgement -

the spraypaint idea is the first real test in a big tournament (it was tested before in I think the Confederations Cup), to make sure the wall doesn't close in when the free kick needs to be taken. Seems like a good idea.
I haven't seen the game Brasil vs Croatia, but it looks like the referee played a big part in this opening game. Hopefullly this will not continue in the upcoming games. Football doesn't need that controversy (we have enough of that with Blatter alone)
GO BELGIUM!waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh -

Yeah, Croatia has a right to be upset. Not only should the penalty not have been given, but Neymar should have been off with a red before he even had a chance to score the equalizer. He looks right at the guy, then away, smacks him in the face with his elbow and claims not to have seen him. Then again, a better goalkeeper would have saved all three of those shots...
That spraypaint thing had me doing a double take as well.

I'm really excited to see how Belgium does in this tournament. They've come out of nowhere to have a surprisingly good team in the last couple years, and I think they could surprise a lot of people. -

I just saw the goals, but the first was indeed save-able by the goaltender. And I heard about the ellbow incident. Seems like it was destined for Brasil to win this one. Sad for Croatia!waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh -

Yes, for the first in a long time we Belgians have this 'invincible' feeling. It's been long since we had some A+ quality players. Hopefully they can cope with the pressure, because we want nothing but the quarter final (which means beating Portugal or Germany in the 8th finales) and first qualifying
Which team are you rooting for Edmund?waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh -

Germany. I'm crossing my fingers for the USA to get the second slot in that group, but obviously the chances of that happening are next to nothing; Portugal and even Ghana are just too strong. In all the other games I'll just cheer for whichever team is the underdog.
Except Italy. Screw Italy. -

Neymar was never going to be sent off in that game. The ref would have to have left the stadium under an armed escort!
Red carding someone in a game is very difficult to do in such a big tournament. The pressure from organisers to have a great game must be great and sending some off is a good way to ruin a game. Presenters are always saying how a sending off ruins a game and hinting that it should not have happened regardless of how serious the offence is.The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Sorry Volker, football and I are no friends. Any potential loss of consciousness is therefore pretty much due mostly to alcoholic intake.
It's quite impossible to escape the madness (although I keep trying), so I was aware the Dutch team won (fireworks were being shot off around the terrace where I was enjoying a summer night's port every single time a goal was made...).
But normally I only get marginally drawn in around the finals if the Dutch are still in.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

Since Spain is probably the team I'm least supporting in this world cup (except Italy. Screw Italy.), yesterday's result pleases me. They've obviously become complacent after their string of successes. And that "unbeatable" midfield isn't getting any younger either. -
