Monastery of La Rabida Vangelis 1492
As a child I lived in Corfu for a few months each year. My bedroom window opened in a sea of olive trees. 1492 was one of the first soundtracks I owned given to me by my favorite cousin. I remember sitting on the window, looking at the olive trees turned silver under the moonlight while listening to this cue. I used to imagine the trees were the sea in front of me. Other times they were a forest and as the fireflies flew around them I though they were fairies dancing hand in hand with the notes of this melody.

That's quite a picture you've painted there, Stavi. cool

Now I really fancy some olives...
  1. "Solitude" from Ennio Morricone's THE THING

Obviously "outstanding...film music brilliance" doesn't have to be out-and-out action scoring (as highlighted by many of the excellent choices on the list) and this track

    http://youtu.be/J_GC9oe7SEc

is certainly not action-packed. If ever you wanted to hear isolation and despair laid out in a piece of music then "Solidtude" is it; particularly from about the 2:00 mark in the video. One of the greatest pieces written for film - it's a shame that it was cut up so much in the film. But at least it did feature in the film.

Looking through the list, action cues don't appear to have quite the monopoly you're implying?

Could you not have read it in a way that suggested that I was actually highlighting that that was the case where the title of the thread may have implied action-oriented cues?

And here's why: the whole point of having such a topic is to celebrate 1) a glorious score, from start to finish as it represents itself in a 2) glorious album someone very knowledgeable and with great appetite put to together for us which makes it a must-have. Not a 3 hour collection of every single note, fart and breath recorded in the studio lazily and messily put on 3 discs for us to choose and find the needle in the haystack.

There's a strong chance you may have missed a key element to this discussion.

Bullcrap. Let's list absolutely perfect from note 1 to end c&c releases. Go. Be honest and you can't find more than 10.

The irony of that post is going to make my head explode. dizzy

...there was never any intention to make a "perfect album" thread, it started off as an off-handed, sarcastic joke about there already existing a 'best albums' thread. You are quite literally arguing with yourself!

(wanted to make a point about listing topics not being strict enough as per topic's title per se and against c&c) . People tend to drift away in listing topics and derive away from the topic's title , not austerely posting what the topic asks for and just posting stuff they generally like which might fall into the topic's title or not.

Balcony Scene Romeo and Juliet ~ Craig Armstrong

With love's light wings did I o'er - perch these
    walls,
For stony limits cannot hold love out,

That absolutely, positively needs to be augmented by
What Is A Youth (Love Theme) from Romeo And Juliet - Nino Rota
Quite possibly the most searing of love themes ever composed.

    A rose will bloom,
    It then will fade
    So does a youth.
    So does the fairest maid.

You set the bar to impossible heights now.

JOHN BURSTS IN / THE END / ROBIN AND MARIAN from John Barry's ROBIN AND MARIAN

    Robin and Marian

Still, here is a favourite of mine, not so tragically inclined this love theme is full of the warmth of sweet melancholic nostalgia and the longing of what could have been, a most beautiful theme amongst the most beautiful.

Casino Royale African Rundown David Arnold

A fantastic way to herald in the new Bond, and far more 'gritty' than any action music Arnold had done before.

I think this is one of the greatest action cues ever written.
You may disagree with that, but you'd be wrong.

I like it but it still has that Arnold tendency to get "messy" and inconsistent. I prefer the action music he did for TND, TWINE and Quantum more.

You may disagree with that as much as you like and I still won't give a shit.

I haven't picked out a track in a few days, so....

TARAS BULBA -- "The Ride to Dubno" -- Franz Waxman

What a rollicking ride this is. Some sort of Russian dance music, I would assume (or a fandango?). So much energy, but in a structured way. Waxman was my favourite Golden Age composer, and this is one of my favourite scores and soundtracks by him, even in this day and age when I prefer more calm stuff.
    I am extremely serious.

Great choice Thor. Waxman's piece does have the feel of Aram Khachaturian's Sabre Dance.

Hmmmm....I don't know, the VIRGINIAN theme is more straight-forward horseback-riding Americana, and not quite as slavic or aggressive. But I see your point.
    I am extremely serious.
  3. HOLY GRAIL and FINALE from Miklos Roza's KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE

Richard Thorbe hired Rozsa to a last minute scoring job. Only with his orchestrator becoming the co-composer was Rozas able to rise to the occasion.
As with EL CID Rozsa saves the choir for the last, quintessential moment. The main theme is one of the most infectious Rozsa has ever written.

    Volker knight

Percival, my Knight and servant, this High Vision is granted to such that are pure in heart to the end that Faith in what is eternal my be renewed. Of Fellowship and Honor naught is lost and of all knights, Galahad, son of Lancelot shall be most worthy. Give comfort then to Lancelot whose guilt is all forgiven and whose heart shall now know peace.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  4. - Who's Up for An Adventure (Journey 2) by Andrew Lockington

Ok, it's not the best piece ever written, but considering it's so bloody difficult to find old fashioned THEMATIC music in today's blockbusters, I welcome this amazing piece where 3 themes collide to form this amazing montage piece, a piece that blew my mind the moment i first heard it in the film. Add to that the haunting vocals and MY FAVORITE THEME of the three (1.35 - 2.00) and you get filmmusic brilliance smile
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
