I swear I've listened to enough ''quiet'' music for a long time now, and I'm searching for more big, over the top, David Arnold Godzilla-style action scores. The only problem is - what others are there? Sure, there's Stargate, ID4 also by Arnold, and Silvestri's done his fair share of things (and lets not forget Tyler's AVPR!), but what other composers have gone completly nuts?

    Help! confused

P.S., Preferably scores without large choir-based cues. tongue (Headache!)

Of course, you can't sum up actionscores without mentioning Edward Shearmur's Reign of Fire! (although I can't guarantee you won't get any headaches of it, even though it only sparsely uses a choir wink).

Although i'd mean "over the top" in a negative way for these scores below - and i mean NEVER, here goes:

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (Marco Beltrami)
    MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III (Michael Giacchino)
MEDAL OF HONOR: AIRBORNE (Michael Giacchino)
    LAIR (John Debney, game score)
GOD OF WAR I / II (Various, game score)
BATTLEFIELD 2: MODERN COMBAT (Rupert Gregson Williams, game score)
    CASINO ROYALE (David Arnold)

    More soon wink
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Hehe, I got that the other month to be honest. Somehow the only time I've listened to it was on the train home through my crappy earbud headphones. Obviously everyone knows earbud headphones + anything loud = crap. Actually, earbud headphones are crap in general...

And damn, why am I so crap at remembering what music I have. Everything Demetris listed I've got...but I forgot... shocked

Come to think of it, I wouldn't really call stuff like Casino Royale or MI3 over the top. I'd say they were more ''standard'', but equally brilliant, I'm not being negative about any of them. Lair, Godzilla etc. - scores that have an orchestra that's so big it's almost comical (especially Godzilla - cues like Joe Gets A Bite and Animal's Camera just bring a smile to the face. The brass section just goes nuts, it's hilarious). Now THAT'S over the top! tongue

Sorry for making you type those out Demetris, I need a better brain!

Well, I'd also categorize scores like M:I-III and Casino Royale as 'scores with big ass action cues', not 'big ass action scores'. Reign of Fire, or Ghost Rider are more the 'big ass action scores' smile

Hmmm...I've kinda gone the opposite route the last few years. I rarely listen to my non-stop, heads-on action scores anymore (even though they make out the majority of my collection). I prefer the quite, melodic, ethereal, moody stuff instead. Could it be my age?

    Yes! biggrin wink

Seriously though, I feel the same way. I still love action scores but they're not so much on my 'to play' list as they used to be, I much prefer more "cerebral" scores in the vein of what you mentioned.

This type of scores were referred to, by Bruce Broughton, as "potboiler scores". This kind of intense, orchestral music is really cool, and here are a few I believe fall into this category:

    - Narrow Margin (Bruce Broughton)
    - Capricorn One (Jerry Goldsmith)
    - Total Recall (Jerry Goldsmith)
    - Eye of the Needle (Miklos Rozsa)
    - Die Hard 2: Die Harder (Michael Kamen)
    - Soldier (Joel McNeely)
    - Tremors (Robert Folk)

Let's throw Robert Folk's Lawnmower Man 2 in the mix as well. Around half of the tracks on that album are lengthy, AWESOME action cues.

Yes... Varese. One of the best Goldsmith scores Goldsmith didn't compose.

Got David Arnold's Casino Royale for Christmas of 2006. Apart from the 007 theme, I didn't much care for it.

    My choices -

    Godzilla (David Arnold)
    xXx (Randy Edelman)
    Commando (James Horner)
    Krull (James Horner)
    Mission Impossible II (Hans Zimmer)
    Casino Royale (David Arnold)

xXx is by far a favourite of mine, one of Randy Edelman's best scores, IMO! punk

    Hi,
I'm also looking for good Action Scores atm and to give you a recommendation Anthony, one of the best Action Scores I've ever heard is Armageddon. You definately need to check it out, especially the parts from Harry Gregson-Williams. His "Asteroid Chase - The Shuttle Crash" is simply breathtaking and the best piece I've ever heard in this genre.

Yes, very synthy. Sounds like he composed it on my old Yamaha keyboard I had as a kid. That said, it is a fun action piece! Worked fantastic in the movie too - on a Michael Bay level at least. wink

Armageddon is very effective indeed; sounds cheesy and dated at most places but that main theme is gorgeous and the action writing is addictive.

The biggest and most over the top action adventure score I've heard is John Debney's CutThroat Island... and it's absolutely brilliant!

Christopher Young's Hard Rain - a hugely fun listen. Diverting this off-topic slightly, does anyone know what his original track titles were supposed to be?

Why do you ask? What's the story behind them? smile
  5. Milan rejected the original track titles, because they had nothing to do with scene association. So Young changed them to most generic possible.
