  1. NP: Final Destination - Shirley Walker

In today's over-saturated release schedule of film scores, it's hard to understand (without knowing any governing factors) why Walker's score hasn't yet received a decent release. The main title must be one of my favourite themes around. And the rest isn't too bad either.

Bridge of Spies - Thomas Newman

I'm not familiar enough with Newman's work to compare this to everything else he's written but there's some very Williams-esque writing here. And then there's cues with more electronics that Williams doesn't usually venture into. Either way, it's very good music.

    Thomas Newsomethingorother.

Looks like the full CD is up on youtube officially: "Provided to YouTube by Universal Music Group International", via the channel #ThomasNewman.

I bailed on a couple cues, and finally gave up after about a dozen of them -- it's jsut boring. There's nothing to draw me in, it sems to go all over the place in a way that doesn't feel right, the cues don't seem to fit with others in a way that you cvould tell it's from the same score (for the msot part), and I'll be damned if I can remember the theme -- even right after hearing it.

I was approaching it from the position of, "I wonder what John Williams would have done [WWJWD?]..." 'cause I dont' give a crap about what he might have done, I simply listened. I'm already starting to sense a wave of over hype coming for this score, though I don't think it wil last that long.

For those who don't want to hunt, here are some cues (random slections):

Also as a producer Spielberg has worked with a variety of composers.

Yes but as director, his relationship with Williams spans decades. Of course it would raise eyebrows when they're not collaborating.

Very pretty. Not used to this sound from the composer.

NP: LORDS OF THE FALLEN (Knut Avenstroup Haugen)

Huge, epic score for this videogame last year -- composed by my good friend Knut. Wish it got a proper soundtrack release -- this is bound to be a fan favourite in the same style as the composer's earlier AGE OF CONAN scores.

NP: A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST (Joel McNeely)

One of the best western scores in the last 15 years, even if it's pure pastiche and the film leaves a lot to be desired.

    Bridge of Spies Thomas Newman

It has some duller moments as Justin and Thor, our two most reasonable members, have alluded to, but it's no doubt typically effective (and affecting) within the film. The highlights, though, are exactly that. 'Homecoming' is classic Newman, incredibly beautiful, and should be part of any Newman compilation hereafter.

There's also some moderately new territory with the Russian choir and Williams references. Great stuff. I don't love it all, but there's enough brilliant music here worth returning to. Perhaps the rest will grow on me after seeing the film.

One thing though: why does Newman's brass writing come off sounding like synth? Is it the recording?
  4. Some of his brass in Skyfall sounds like synth as well ("Tennyson"). Maybe it's just a texture he likes. He wouldn't be the first, would he?

Good point about the synth-y brass. It's not pronounced enough to be an annoyance, but it has a tinge of that.

I love this score, my second favourite Newman of the year after MALALA.

No, I don't mind it really. But I would prefer it to sound a little more 'organic' as they say.

    Casino Royale - D Arnold

For clarity, this is NOT the one scored by B Bacharach, it's an original score by D Arnold for the later movie of the same name. The funny thing is they are both based on the book by Ian Fleming. Another coincidence: neither movie stars Bob Holness.

My most-listened-to score of 2015 according to iTunes. And too right. It's a 5 star album for me.

I tried that cue just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

It was plesant enough, but around four minutes and I was already bored, and not because of the slow pace, but because I've know I've heard it before in one way or another from Newman.

It's no where near 5 star for me but it does have some bloody great moments, certainly not a weak Giacchino score as far as I'm concerned.

Just listened to this for the first time. I agree with everything you just said. "Homecoming" is one of favorite cues of the year. This score is top ten for the year for me right now. I don't think it will stay there, but it's good.

No, it takes a lot of effort to be as mediocre as Land of the Lost is. wink

NP: THE MONKEY KING (Christopher Young)

Aargh...my ears hurt! Not going to delete this, but definitely had to stretch for the "stop" button after some 35 minutes. This is SO not my cup of tea these days. 20-year-old Thor would have loved it, though.

    Seventh Son Marco Beltrami

This is so good, I've never heard this side to Beltrami. Firmly rooted in fantasy scoring. It's quite noisy, so it may not appeal to everyone, but it's certainly not boring. It takes a few listens to get familiar with the themes and various intricacies, but like any great score once they've revealed themselves it's film music heaven. Brilliant!
