I'm going to do my next Celluloid Tunes episode on montages over the weekend, and I want your recommendations. I have some parameters that need to be in place:

    * Should be around 3 minutes (slightly less or more is OK)
    * Classics are OK (you know, like "Training Montage" from ROCKY IV), but I'm also looking for less known montage tracks
    * No need to suggest any Elfman or Williams. I have those covered.
    * Needs to be a MONTAGE, edited to compress time with much of the sound effects weeded out, not just a "realtime" action sequence or a main title sequence (these are often confused)

    Thanks!
    I am extremely serious.

Thanks, guys! Before I start checking them out, are they within the parameters (the duration is particularly important)?

I'll edit out the tracks that are over 3-3:30 in length. Done!

Thanks, but it's better that it's longer than shorter. 1-minute and 2-minute tracks are a bit too short, but if we're at, say, 2.45, it's doable. Maximum is 4-5 minutes if they're really good. But ideally between 2.45 and 4 minutes. (sounds unnecessarily complicated, but it has to do with the fact that I choose 10 tracks of 3 minutes, which means 30 minutes music and 30 minutes talk for an approximate 1-hour show).

You don't make it easy. wink

I've just chucked away the ones between 3-4 minutes.

Damn, I was a bit too late in my response earlier. I would rather you chucked away your 1 and 2-minute tracks and kept the 3-4 minute. But OK, I'm not going to bother you anymore. Much appreciated!

  2. "The Construction" (2:34; Goldsmith)

"The Shark Cage Fugue" (2:00; Williams)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC3ubExxYoc

    "City Montage" (1:54; Elfman)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGV_DeHCarw

"Dutch Builds Trap" (9:28; Silvestri -- it's "Predator", let the length go)

"Column of Sadness / Wheel of Pain" (4:10; Poledouris)

"To the Stars" (3:17; Edelman -- sort of montage-ish)

I remember a number of montage scenes from "North by Northwest".

"The Caravan" is like the travel montage in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Camel Race is NOT a montage scene.

    Great. "The Caravan" it is.

(and I need to see the film again. Wonderful popcorn B-film with A film production values -- what happened to Stephen Sommers?).

I really enjoyed the first Mummy film as well. Deep Rising is a lot of fun, too Then Sommers felt like he had to top himself with each new film so every thing he did post The Mummy was boring CGI bullshit!

I enjoyed the second one too (and a smokin' Silvestri score to boot). The third and fourth not so much, nor the SCORPION KING spinoffs.
    I am extremely serious.
  3. There's a fourth? dizzy

Yeah, second Mummy is OK as well, miles and miles beyond the awful AWFUL third one. Not quite as good as the first, but I'm always a bit surprised at the vast difference in reception the two got. While we're on the subject of Sommers, I've got a massive soft spot for Van Helsing as well, even though that one really is a genuinely shit movie. Seminal score in the getting-into-film-music process for me, though (first thing I ever listened to that wasn't Hans Zimmer) - that's probably why.

I'm not. Although the sequel seems to follow the same formula as The Mummy, and might work on paper, it's missing all the charm. Instead it's just a retread of the first film, more of a Back To The Future Part II than an Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. (Except, unlike Back To The Future Part II, it didn't work and had an annoying kid.)

    Awful film.

Sorry, I'm confused again. There are three MUMMY films, but four SCORPION KING films.
    I am extremely serious.
  4. "Borg Montage" (1:02; Goldsmith [I don't recall if it was by Jerry or Joel])
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZeO1ByUN0Q (26:15 in, though the reved-up continuous action alternate is better, at 1:15:03)

"New Order Montage" (1:19; Silvestri's kick-ass brass and drum piece)
Full cue available for listening at Intrada's website.

    "Gunfight Montage" (1:51; Silvestri)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZF8zffFf3k

A little long and not a lot of time crunched, but:
    "Building the Barn" (4:49; Jarre)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2GqYpiwnXY

Again, would TV shows count? I got about half a dozen examples for that.

And wasn't there a montage of Rambo contructing things in "First Blood"?
