I recently received from CPO for review a CD of his 4th and 5th symphonies. I can find little or no information about him other than the Dutch banned him for being a friend of the Nazis? I rather like his 4th Symphony which was written during WWII. Looking for more information.

Very little information about such a prolific composer. I was hoping that Martijn might know more.

I don't know much more. I also know that he was banned from working for a few short years because he had been a member of the Kulturkammer (a "cultural" board instated by the German occupation forces) that vetted all music and performances for being in line with Nazi ideals.

The whole blacklisting was a bit McCarthy-esque as a great many composers, artists, bands and orchestras had signed up, simply because otherwise they would not be allowed to play (hence to make a living)!*) Principles are one thing, starvation another. Thankfully after about two years the zealousness of the immediate post-War righteousness had abated, and pretty much everyone who had not been an immediate collaborator or true propagator of Nazi propaganda or ideals was pardoned.

Badings, who also had a degree in architecture and General Arts, tended to work on pretty avant-garde stuff, hence me not being overly familiar with him. For example, he made a whole thing of the 31-tone scale, and had to wait for Fokker -yes, the airplane builder- to build him a 31-tone organ so his work could be performed).
He himself indicated that his interest in microtonality was mainly due to the Indonesian music he had experienced and remembered from growing up (in "the colonies").

I know he made some "easier" (i.e. more melodic) music as well, but to me nothing stands out.
His work for films is negligible. I think he only wrote a handful of film scores, none of which made much of a dent in Dutch cinematography.

*) Good story connected to how thorough the Kulturkammer was: one dance orchestra, the Ramblers (Holland's oldest swing band) had also signed up, and henceforth of course weren't allowed to play "black" and/or un-aryan music any more. Bit of an issue for a swing band!
So what they did is they kept their standard repertoire, including all the greats like Ellington, Miller, Gershwin, Goodman and what have you....but they translated all titles and composer names in Dutch!
The Germans amazingly never tweaked onto this!
...Of course they were also still banned from playing for two years after the war. After all, they HAD signed up with the Kulturkammer... slant

What a nice post about him! His 4th Symphony was written during World War II but has no references to the war at all. It is extremely tonal and a Dutch critic at the time Wouter Paap called it far to pleasant to the ears. I think that you would like it. One can hear the strains of something that Prokofiev might do. It offers fine orchestration.

I'm afraid that knowledge was lost with my father's passing in 2012. sad He was a bit of an authority on the matter.

But if I remember well as a rule of thumb they either did a literal translation (so Miller became 'Molenaar', Goodman 'Goedeman') or were just "Dutchified" to look Dutch (so Gershwin would presumably become something like Gersewijn.)

Tom, you've added an extra "d" to the composer's name in the post heading.

Thanks for the review. I've not found Symphonies 4 or 5 on Amazon's digital store yet, but listening to the clips from his ninth symphony, I'll look out for his works.
