  1. NP: Resident Evil: Apocalypse - Jeff Danna

I remember when this came out at the time I was excited that Danna had been given the opportunity to try his hand at something in this genre - I'd only heard scores such as Uncorked, O, Reversal and The Gospel of John.

There are some great tracks on this album but I don't think that the score was as well received as it could have been. Or was that the movie?

NP: Earth vs. The Spider - Albert Glasser

A great sense of peril and dread once the spider appears. And you can't go wrong with a bit of theremin.

"Get That DDT In Here Quick!" is a stand-out track title!

That sounds a bit of alright! A Monstrous Movie Music release?

NP: The Ring / The Ring Two - Hans Zimmer et al

Whilst I would prefer to know which tracks belong to which movies, the overall feel of the score is unsettling. Particularly love the ostinato and aggression of the strings.

But dislike the re-mixes with a passion.

  4. NP: Hellraiser - Christopher Young

This one has everything. Great thematic material, creepy atmospheric percussive effects, emotionally powerful passages...and a waltz.

The most warped and creepy waltz ever IMO.

One of the few horror soundtracks I actually enjoy listening to, that.
    I am extremely serious.
  5. NP: The Witches' Hammer - Mark Conrad Chambers

Brooding score that's a bit overlong - it runs to about 20 minutes longer than the 90 minute movie. The composer settles for using the orchestra to create a gloomy feel to the score at the expense of much melodic material. But, using an orchestra to create the soundscape does make it interesting listening.

  6. NP: The Silence of the Lambs - Howard Shore

This is such an excellent score - one of my favourites. Another brooding score but also contains some great set-pieces.

    BFG John Williams

My favourite score of the year, along with Gods of Egypt (and The Huntsman, in suite form). It's incredible how much this has grown on me.
  7. Hm. I dare say I need to give this one renewed attention.

I intend to pick it up on CD soon. I spun it a few times on Spotify, and it didn't move beyond 'disappointment' stage. Haven't played it in a few weeks now.

  8. NP: Godzilla - Akira Ifukube

Composer does a great job of instilling a sense of dread and relentlessness of the monster's advance against the world.

  9. NP: Jaws - John Williams

This is the expanded original score with great sound. Excellent stuff.

  10. NP: Amphibious 3D - Fons Merkies

An average score for this 2010 horror/creature-from-the-deep movie. Ethnic woodwinds and voices add a bit of variety to an otherwise competent score that only occasionally offers flashes of excitement.

  11. NP: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - Matthew Margeson & whoever the hell

Definitely not what I expected. Definitely better than I expected. Some genuine creativity and orchestral prowess in here and barely a hint of any RC cliches.
  12. The Disappointments Room - Brian Tyler

So far, this is shockingly mature and accomplished music in comparison to the typical Tyler score. I barely even recognize his signature sound. Excellent dynamic range on the recording too, which is probably part of why it sounds so unlike him...his albums are usually as 'overproduced' as pop music...

    이데아 ("IDEA") - Steve Jablonsky

Finally the spiritual sequel to D-WAR? shocked biggrin
  13. NP: Dark Waves / Bellerofonte (2015) - Alexander Cimini

Listening to it on Spotify. I'm hearing a lot more Morricone here stylistically than Southall did. Yet the melodies are fresh and varied. I love the piano play. Fine score.

  14. NP: The BFG (2016) - John Williams

This is ground solid Williams. The main theme revisits his work for Harry Potter. Also we find the mannerisms of current Williams, that are present in The Force Awakens or War Horse too. The orchestration is outstanding and is probably the biggest asset of the score. Like with The Force Awakens the themes are interwoven into the music. There are no concert set pieces. You may deplore this but is does make for a more coherent symphonic listening experience.

I like this a lot! Is there anywhere you can download it?
  15. Now this kind of Jablonsky I like. Simplistic stuff still, but it sounds so much more enjoyable than anything he's done in a long time, even his Turtles score from earlier this year. That opening track...been a while since an RC score has had quite that much Pirates of the Caribbean to it, and I love it!

Man, Jablonsky turns into a completely different composer in Asia, doesn't he? dizzy

His Turtles score is fantastic. I'm surprised you don't like it given that it's exactly what you seem to be describing.
  16. That's why I said "even". tongue It's good, I do like it, but from the parts of Idea that I sampled, that sounds a bit more expansive and varied (whereas Turtles was kind of just the same two or three - very enjoyable and catchy - themes repeated ad nauseam over the course of a ton of interchangeable action cues).

Screw all this Hollywood stuff! THIS is what you should be listening to; one of the best scores of the year.
