Fringe, season 2 - Chris Tilton

Listening out of nostalgia for the show, which I adored. But it's all sort of smoke and mirrors, and outtakes from Giacchino's Lost phase.

There was a time, six years ago, when I felt Giacchino could do no wrong scoring Lost. In retrospect, I think his accomplishment remains commendable (i.e., commendably unified for a show that was diffuse and out-of-control BIG -- he told the story musically better than the producers told it verbally or visually). But meh, I'd much rather listen to other stuff.

Tilton is generally a bit meh for me. And fringe sounds like LOST leftovers, only not as good.

Someone (I think it was James) once pointed out that the movie title fits the melody of this almost perfectly. Since then this has always been a sing-along cue for me (at least when there's nobody else in the room).

Richard Donner said the same thing about Superman. Perhaps this is the secret to his success? What a fraud.

  5. AGE OF CONAN: RISE OF THE GODSLAYER - Knut Avenstroup Haugen

Had I known in 2010 that this had come out and would be out of print a couple of years later I would've picked up a copy for certain. It completely flew under my radar. Because this is is very good, gorgeous at times. It's much more oriental-inspired score than the first Age of Conan videogame score (Hyborian Adventures), which was simply excellent, and which I own on CD. This shows a very talented composer at work, a man with a knack for inspired melodic writing, not the cliched kind we find in many modern adventure scores. If anyone knows where to buy this digitally, let me know. smile

NP: The Spitfire Grill - James Horner

Now that the weather is getting warming here in Southern Ontario I'm turning to scores that remind me of warm, relaxing summer days! This is an incredibly personal score for me. It reminds me of one of my greatest high school teachers. This score was his all time favourite film score and we always talked about it around this time of the year!

This is one of Horner's greatest achievements, which includes a brilliant end title suite that is among the best ever composed! Sublime!

  6. It's a lovely score. In my top five Horner scores for sure.

Fucking love that score, it's just gorgeous.
  7. Jaws - John Williams

No other composer would have written a cue like "Promenade (Tourists on the Menu)."

I'll confess I rarely gave this score much play until the last few months. Much more going on in each track than I originally caught. . . . (There's a fishing pun in that last remark somewhere, but you get the idea.) Incredible meld of horror, suspense, and adventure.
  8. A score to sink your teeth into.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

NP: THE KARATE KID (Bill Conti)

Quickly becoming one of my Conti favourites. I actually got it just a few weeks ago, in preparation of my sports movie scores episode. Classical pastiche (which Conti always does well), some straighforward romanticism and mystery, pan flutes and sprinkles of 80s' synths here and there. What's not to like?

(although the film is a nostalgic favourite -- like most people my age -- I had very little memory of the score; only songs like "Glory of Love").
    I am extremely serious.

NP: Gladiator (variations) - Wibi Soerjadi

This famous Dutch classical pianist in 2003 quite unexpectedly came out with this very worthwhile transcription of Zimmer's work on Gladiator. I still revisit this often, if only for the sheer creativity of the piece.
    It's on YouTube too!

  10. NP: Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) - George Delerue

I set my workstation to harpsichord and played the gorgeous title theme myself. That's about as elaborate as my by-the-ear playing gets.

    smile Volker
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  11. THE TERMINATOR - Brad Fiedel

I don't love this one (as much as the sequel score) but I had to own this remastered edition just for the sake of having all the versions of the iconic theme. I cannot think of 'music' that would work better alongside the images and plot and violence.

There's a track called 'Fuck you A**hole'. How amazing is that ! cool

    Let me say that again:

    FUCK YOU A**HOLE

    Worth every € ! cheesy

Good title, but I'm fairly certain that scene actually did not HAVE any music. uhm
'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn
  12. Well not actually music in the strictest sense. But a lot of droning.

And that's Fiedel's Terminator in a nutshell. Still it beats most of the modern guys compositions, for the sake of being completely original. And having a really excellent theme.

Nothing he ever wrote ever surpassed Hyborian Adventures imo. Everything was a bit downhill from that beautiful, truly excellent score, onwards.

I wouldn't go that far. He's written some great things since then, both for videogames and films. Like LORDS OF THE FALLEN and the two animated PINCHCLIFFE films.
