This topic is about voting your TOP THREE favourite scores composed by specific composers. You vote, I will compile the lists, and in the end we will have lists of the best scores from our favourite
    composers in here.

This first entry will list all different composers and their lists, and will be regularly updated.

Please use this topic to vote. Do not vote in the composer´s specific topic.

If you vote, please specify EXACTLY the composer´s name and your TOP THREE scores by this composer, either ranked from 1st to 3rd place (the scores will get 3 to 1 point/s), or as an unranked list (each score gets 2 points).

Some composers got no 2nd or 3rd place, just a number of unranked scores. That´s just because this is about the best three scores, so if there are three scores on 1st place (because they got the same number of points), there is no need for further "winning" places.

I now include voter lists. Every voter in this TOP THREE scores topic has been taken into account, as well as all the old voters from the specific composer topics of Arnold, Barry, Doyle, Goldsmith, Horner, Howard, Jones, Williams, and Zimmer.

*behind a name means that your last counting vote for that composer was made in the specific composer topic. Please go there to find your old vote if you want to change them.

Whenever you want to CHANGE your vote (a new score changes everything, or you have other reason to change your vote), please list your old vote again and then your new vote, so that I can see what´s different and take that into account.

    And now, have fun...

    Update June 7th, 2008
I´m still busy adding the dates of the old votes. I´ve added everything from February 5th and later, as well as dates from the composer´s topics of John Williams and Hans Zimmer. More to come soon.

    Great work, Ralph! Three questions:

    1. Why do some of the composers NOT have 3rd place listed?
    2. Will you "introduce" a new composer in this thread?
    3. I assume we should not repeat our listing from previous composer threads, as these are already accounted for above?
    I am extremely serious.
  1. My votes for Goldsmith:

    1. Papillon
    2. Under Fire
    3. The Blue Max

And also for some unmentioned composers:

    - Michael Kamen: 1. Band of Brothers; 2. The Iron Giant; 3. Mr Holland's Opus.

    - Howard Shore: 1. The Yards; 2. Return of the King; 3. The Aviator

    - Elliot Goldenthal: 1. Cobb; 2. Heat; 3. Alien 3.

    - Alexandre Desplat: 1. Birth; 2. The Painted Veil; 3. The Beat My Heart Skipped / Hostage

    - Danny Elfman: 1. Sommersby; 2. Mission: Impossible; 3. Black Beauty.

Well, if we're also allowed to mention composers that have not had the "Top 3" treatment, I'll have to repeat Danny Elfman again. But I'll wait untill Ralph greenlights it. After all, he's the man running this show. smile

I think it's best to keep it to popular composers amongst the people on this board, I can't imagine many people voting for Max Steiner, Franz Waxman, Hugo Friedhofer etc top 3's outside a small handful of us!?

Danny Elfman should be up for sure, along with Basil Poledouris and Elmer Bernstein.

It is the top three, so if I have two scores with equal points for 1st or 2nd place, there are already three top scores before it comes down to third place.

    2. Will you "introduce" a new composer in this thread?

    I guess so.

    3. I assume we should not repeat our listing from previous composer threads, as these are already accounted for above?

Yes. I will take into account any votes already made.

    [MODERATOR NOTE]

I didn't read the original posts but apparently it got messy somehow, really messy. I deleted all the irrelevant posts in here 'cause they were about personal issues and misunderstandings that despite who was wrong and who not, disrupted the flow of the topic and the fun to be had. I also re-opened the thread 'cause apart the fact that t it won't be nice to have 2 identical threads (as far as their titles are concerned) coming up in searches afterwards, some people did contribute to the thread already and it would be unfair to ask them to re-post their initial lists.

So, high-spirits again, problems resolved via pm's (i am sure they will be) and here we go!

I thought PMS usually created problems, not resolved them.

    *ka-ching*!

OK, sorry about that. There seems to be a lot of people launching their respective composer lists here with little moderation. Shouldn't we take one at a time (and shouldn't Ralph decide the sequence)?

Also, i don't think there's a problem with people launching lists. I am sure Ralph will take them into account when he finds the time to do so and in the meantime discussions are always open, based on those lists.

Agreed. Let them come, I´ll sort it out. Just be a bit patient, since I won´t update every day, but in the end your composer and your votes will be included.

Please specify the season(s) you want to vote for (if more than one, skip other scores you voted for), or we have to allow naming complete score trilogies, series, and stuff now, which I´d find rather impractical right now, since then everyone would change his votes on Williams I guess... wink

    Alright. In that case:

    DANNY ELFMAN:

    1. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
    2. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
    3. BATMAN

    ELLIOT GOLDENTHAL:

    1. ALIEN 3
    2. FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN
    3. BATMAN FOREVER
    I am extremely serious.
  6. Some more...

    BASIL POLEDOURIS
    1. Lonesome Dove
    2. Conan the Barbarian
    3. Les Miserables

    THOMAS NEWMAN
    1. Angels in America
    2. The Good German
    3. The Horse Whisperer

BTW - looking at the above list of scores, surely Jerry Goldsmith was the greatest film composer on that list. The group of scores under his name are an incredible list of titles.

Interestingly, Demetris, I have NO soundtracks of ANY of the composers you suggested above, so according to my own set rules, that makes me unqualified to make a list for any of them (I HAVE seen some Giacchino-scored films, but can't remember much of the music).

However, it seems like several have made Thomas Newman lists, so here is mine:

    THOMAS NEWMAN:

    1. THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
    2. AMERICAN BEAUTY
    3. THE GREEN MILE
    I am extremely serious.

You and Erik should BOTH know there's a difference between "hearing" a score as heard while watching a film and having it on disc where you can devour it at your leisure. ( from what Thor's said here I don't think he owns any MG? )

I wouldn't say 'Are you sure you're a film music fan' just because they were not familiar with Giancchino.

    Know any PHILIPPE SARDE Steven?

Sorry to be harsh but we could ALL OF US have fingers pointed at us for "supposed" short comings in not knowing certain composers who we think everyone should be familiar with.

p.s. I'm not saying anything angrily, just think a bit smile
