    Colossal - Bear McCreary

I watched the movie last night (which I liked) but it mostly didn't change my opinion of the score, which has very strong opening and ending highlights but the middle section is a churning slog.

Have been listening to quite a bit of John Powell recently.

    Pan

It's not quite in his top tier, but there's much here to like. Some top, top action material and the twinkly opening theme is just lovely.

    Knight and Day

I don't think I've listened to this since just after it came out, and I've no idea why. It's great! "Bull Run" is an incredible action cue. The hispanic colours throughout give it a great feel.

    Ice Age: The Meltdown

Has its moments, but I don't like it as much as David Newman's.

    Robots

I've always really liked this one. Until the Dragons came around, it was undoubtedly my favourite Powell animation score. So much fun.

    Rio

This is great fun, too, and the main theme's delightful. Looking back at my review, I said I was starting to get a bit bored of Powell's animated scores. I was silly.

    NP: THE CIRCLE (Danny Elfman)

I like it. Another 'left-field' score from Elfman, almost fully electronic à la WISDOM, but more in the style of Pemberton's STEVE JOBS.

    Black Gold - Mr. Horner

This is a good one because it has an emotional core. But one could already hear James' tiredness of writing for film seeping through. It has on okay theme and only one action cue (not among his best, but enjoyable enough). Still there's a lot of not much going on as well. A Kingdom of Oil is a fitting finale though.

Absolutely loved this, the theme is gorgeous. Same goes for one of his last scores, the one with the wolves. (wolf totem).

n.p. Hans Zimmer (title theme, a lazy series of arpeggios) and Lorne Balfe (on snooze mode) - Genius (a nat geo series about Einstein and yet there's no a single highlight or interesting cue on that score)

ANGELS IN AMERICA - Thomas Newman

Always imitated, never beaten. I only say that because, although I enjoy a handful of his other scores slightly more as a whole, this particular work stands out as it really does encompass everything that Newman is excellent at. All of his well-established sub-styles are present here; the slow pensive piano solos, the gorgeous soaring melodic passages, the quirky rhythms, the dark terrifying horror textures... and everything else in between. All in all, gorgeous stuff.

    Love it. cool

True. He's such a go-to composer for various new and aspiring comps or for temp tracks, but they can never actually reach him. This is one of his best moments to date. Emotional, dark, love it.

1st Soncinemad Film Music Festival of Madrid Symphonic Concert (2006) - Trevor Jones

So many good pieces from a variety of films, and lovingly performed as well. Great concert !

Cliffhanger, Merlin, Roseanna's Grave, Aegis, Last Place on Earth, The Last of the Mohicans, The Mighty, Fields of Freedom, Dark Crystal, Dominic & Eugene, Last Place on Earth

Jones understood the power of a great theme. Where is this man now? sad

Edit: The Mighty has one of the most emotional cues ever written by any composer (My Noble Knight on the score album, Chapter Six - The Empty Book / Death of a Knight on this one). Gorgeous doesn't even describe it. shocked

Being in the organizing committee of soncinemad I and being there, that concert had such an amazing energy and the performance was fantastic. I adore the 2-cd live set, the performances are even more powerful and full-house sounding than the originals. Flawless performance, so many vivid memories. As for Trevor Jones, i am sure he stopped doing film scores years ago? Wonder what he's up to since, what profession (if any).

This is sensational. A short CD but what quality. The 'Main Title Theme', 'De Profundis' and the 2 'Dona Nobis Pacem' cues are majestic, haunting and unforgettable. The 'Departure' cues, with those sparse piano notes, are hard to shake out of your head too.

Absolutely love it, both seasons' cd's. Shame it had to accompany such a dull and meaningless series. And to think that i actually sat through the entire season 1 wasted my time and waiting for something to happen 'cause i kept telling to myself that something of value or meaning ought to happen with such score. Shame on you Mr.Richter you misguided us with your beautiful music for such a trashy 'look at Jennifer Anniston's boyfriend' tv series.

A pounding, rhythmic, 'pots-and-pans' percussive style forms the basis for what is an excitingly inspired musical take on Shakespeare. Probably annoying as hell in the film but there are 7 or 8 sensational cues that I want to keep on repeat.

Begins with techno before transforming into a series of diverse, often hauntingly powerful cues, many of which are embellished with excellent electronics. Especially moving are the 'Haunted Oceans' cues which feel like a template for that stunning opening piece Richter wrote for Folman's The Congress.

A bit of a throwback to the sound and tone of his much earlier dramatic scores but its a long way short of his best work of this type like Silence of the Lambs for example. Turgid and dreary might best describe it.

We agree on the score, but wow -- we really disagree on the series. IMO, THE LEFTOVERS is almost on the same level as BETTER CALL SAUL. In fact, season 2 has started off even stronger than season 1 (love the last Australia episode with a weathered Scott Glenn, for example).

  1. NP: Troy (2004) by Gabriel Yared
What a great symphonic composition this is. It is staggering, massive stuff. Sensibilities of Golden Age and Greek heritage mingle in the finest way. Max Steiner meets Mikis Theodorakis, you might say. Lovely melodies, great choir writing. Maybe too dark and dominant for what the producers had in mind.

NP: Troy (2004) by James Horner
The danger motive lurks in every corner of this score. Some parts of it are remarkably similar to Yared's music. Other parts are very different. Due to the lack of time the score is constructed from Horner's library like a model kit. Still, the achievement considering the circumstances is flabbergasting.

All cudos to Yared but I believe, that Horner's score fits the film better. Maybe it's just what I have grown accustomed to.

    Volker
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  2. Pure as a listening experience Yared hit it out of the ballpark. Seriously grandiose writing, the kind of larger than life symphonic sound I live for. Too bad it was on the very last that would come out of Hollywood.

As for the producers (or Petersen) not wanting this sound in their film... well 2004 was somewhat of a turning point after the Lord of the Rings and its massive scores that took center-point at various times in the films. There is clearly a before 2004 and after 2004 when it comes to the in-your-face orchestral sound of Hollywood blockbusters. I'm thinking from that point on producers didn't want music to overwhelm the action anymore. That's why many of these grand adventure epics nowadays have such generic interchangeable scores.

Perhaps Shore is to blame. tongue

  3. NP: Looking For Richard - Howard Shore

Arvo Pärt's Te Deum led me straight to one of my favourite of Shore's scores.

Rather than listening to the album I'm listening to a YouTube video where the poster has taken some liberties with the running order:

    https://youtu.be/ap8rwZ-ysRA

But, the essence of the score is there, so that's great.

Although there's always comparisons with his later music for Lord of the Rings, I find that his score for Looking For Richard echoes a lot with Silence of the Lambs (possibly more so than for Lord of the Rings).
