    Romy - Annette Focks

Can't believe this was written for a German TV movie. It’s fresh, breezy, melodic and diverse. Absolutely adore it.

The Island of Dr. Moreau - Gary Chang

Perhaps a little dated but a fun half hour. The great surprise is the Moreau theme itself which is a magnificent, grand piece of real beauty.

    Coriolanus - Ilan Eshkeri

A pounding, rhythmic, 'pots-and-pans' percussive style forms the basis for what is an excitingly inspired musical take on Shakespeare. Probably annoying as hell in the film but there are 7 or 8 sensational cues that I want to keep on repeat.

    Project Nim - Dickon Hinchliffe

Probably my favourite of the scores of his that I've heard to date. Great little melodic hooks - and diversity too. 50 + minutes just fly by.

Annette Focks is a great composer. You should check out her wonderful orchestral affair of the German teen adventure movie The Three Investigators

Thanks for the tip Thomas. I'll try to track that one down, it sounds fantastic. I couldn't be more impressed with what I've heard of her music so far.

    Dickensian - Debbie Wiseman

The early cues brilliantly establish a distinct, semi-whimsical, old world tone. A sense of sameness does set in however as this very long album continues.

    NP: BRIMSTONE (Junkie XL)

It's a wonderful score, but the album is MUCH, much too long. Maybe I'll be able to weed away some 20-30 minutes. I can see this working wonderfully at 40-50 minutes.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. NP: Back to the Future (1985) - Alan Silvestri

Glorious 80s SciFi scoring. The expanded album, leaving out the songs even though those a great, too. The film however leaves me stone cold. It's just not for me.

Really? Perhaps you were too old when it came out?

For me, it's simultaneously an iconic piece of nostalgia AND continues to have a universal, timeless appeal even in 2017. One of my alltime favourite films.

"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  4. Well, call me prudish, but the Oedipal (slightly incesty) aspect of the story doesn't appeal to me. I recently saw the part III western incarnation and liked that one much better.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  5. The Monkey King - Chris Young

What an awesome score ! As a fan of progressive rock, the 17 minute track is a total delight, even more so because of its fusion with the orchestra !

Whenever I watch BTTF, not one thought of incest creeps into my mind. It's all done tastefully, and with Spielbergian charm and humour.

    Alien: Covenant Jed Kurzel

More accomplished than Prometheus, but I doubt many people will like it. It sounds appropriate for an Alien film but is too often just a bit dull.

I love it! Both the references to Goldsmith, Goldenthal, Streitenfeld/HGW and a little bit of Horner, as well as Kurzel's own stylings. No Frizzell, but the "The Med Bay" has shades of the propulsive underwater cue from RESSURECTION. I'll have to give it a few more listens to sort my thoughts.

Just three more weeks untill I see the film -- the film event of the year for me!
    I am extremely serious.

Always get a giggle out of that title. Sounds like a porn.

Lol. True, it's a ridiculous title. Luckily the score itself is very classy.

    Shadow Dancer - Dickon Hincliffe

Much more about mood and texture rather than melody. Not his best score but it holds interest for all of its half hour.

The Fifth Element - Eric Serra

I adore the movie... it's just a total blast. As for the music, not the same amount of adoration but I like many moments, certain tracks do pique my interest, I can never have a bad time listening to this, simply because it's such a unique listening experience, there's just nothing dull or generic about this score. Often it's so quirky and odd but at times also touching and beautiful. Variety is the word here and at least Serra had a couple of instances that Luc Besson gave him where he could go a little crazy.

Also: Little Light of Love love

  11. yeah

NP: Gladiator (2000) - Zimmer, Badelt, Gerrard

Really great, only "He's a Pirate" is irritating in a Roman context. Be sure to have a handkerchief handy when "Elysium" comes up.

Well, it's the other way around (with GLADIATOR coming before PIRATES), but I know what you mean.

  12. This would be the point where some asshole comes and says that it's irritating in both a Roman and pirate context.

But I am not that asshole. Love that kind of Zimmer! punk
  13. When Gladiator came out Zimmer's score was called a modern masterpiece.

Nowadays Zimmer's score could be called an old-school modern masterpiece.

I don't listen enough to it, but I'm feeling that itch coming up and I will find a slot to fit it in soon, I'm sure. cool

    Guardians of the G 2 Tyler B

Like B Tyler's Marvel scores but without the cool themes, I guess. Reasonably entertaining but nothing of substance here.
  14. NP: 1984 - Dominic Muldowney

Muldowney does a great job at giving his score a very clear feel of a poisoned utopia.

  15. NP: The Snows of Kilimanjaro - Bernard Herrmann

Tends to get forgotten amongst Herrmann's better-known scores but this one has a lot to offer. There's some great examples of how the composer takes a small idea and plays around with it. The Kritzerland original soundtrack version is a step up from the Marco Polo re-recording (this latter version is well worth seeking out too).
