Ha, I actually attended a live performance by Philip Glass and his assemble played to picture for Koyaanisqatsi about a year ago. The work didn't specifically do anything to me on an emotional level up till then, but that night, it clicked. Especially Prophecies was near transcendental. I frequently revisit that piece now late at night, or just when depressed.

An underrated Glass piece is "Verloc and the Russian Embassy" from "THE SECRET AGENT". If you haven't heard it yet, check it out!
Bach's music is heartless and robotic.

Oh yes, very good score by him. Long time ago I heard it.

I didn't know there was a new Conan score from Haugen!
I should look that one up! Really like his work on that game franchise.

It's not new; I think it's one of those spin-off games from a few years ago. It's just 19 minutes long, but filled to the brink with goodness. Not sure if it was released commercially, though, since Knut gave me a CD-R of this. It might just be a promo.

My favourite Beal score, although it's a little long at 73 minutes.

Appropriate for a very rainy day here in Oslo. Did she ever do anything else worthwhile? I only have this.

    NP: FILM MUSIC (Jerry Fielding)

Fielding was one of a kind in his blend of traditional and modern, as evidenced on this wonderful 2CD compilation, as well as the two subsequent volumes from Bay Cities (I don't have no. 3).
    I am extremely serious.
  4. I never really connected to Fielding, with the exception of a few scores. That compilation would interest me but as Bay Cities is long defunct there is little hope for a reissue.

heard those spin off scores, but nothing comes out to the production quality of instruments and voices / vocals used and the melody of bold, memorable themes in the first score.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

I think the one I mentioned very much did. In fact, in several ways it's superior. It's just much shorter.

  5. NP: my playlist from the original Star Wars Trilogy

This brings back memories how I used to listen to this music as a teenager, snuggled up in a sofa and reading some science fiction novel.
Sometimes I long for not knowing about young Anakin, the Clone Wars, what happened to Mustafar, what the first victory of the Rebellion over the Empire was ... Soon we will know what exactly Han pulled to get the Falcon and surely the mystery of the Bothan spies will not remain a mystery very much longer.

    Bit of an unfair comparison.
Poledouris' work is unparalleled in its majestic scope and epic grandeur.
NOTHING compares to his work. NOTHING.
But Haugen's take is a very strong and interesting one, and one I really enjoy!

I started to write a very long-winded reply to that, but luckily realised in time I could really easily summarise the response:
    No.

  6. You do know that perhaps Thor is comparing it to the first Haugen score and NOT to the Poledouris original?

    NP: FORBIDDEN WARRIOR (Mike Verta)

Perhaps one of the best pastiche composers around (yes, that can be a compliment too!) in this very rollicking and muscular action score. More than a few nods to Williams.

All the King's Men James H

Years since I listened to this. Much stronger than I remembered (but the Braveheart bit is one of those Horner lifts that seems less forgivable than most).
  8. NP: Arizona Dream (1993) - Emir Kusturica; Iggy Pop

An endearing, lyrical film and an anarchistic creative score.

    Golden Compass

The intrusion of Serafina's theme 1:00 into Desplat's "Battle With the Tarters" may be my favorite moment of his ever. Wow.

And at the end of what until that point is an outstanding composition. It really is too bad. It's still one of my favorite Horner cues, though.
