  1. Good to see Zimmer pay tribute to the man, even though their musical styles and compositions lie on opposite ends of the spectrum. Extremely cool to know Zimmer does indeed appreciate Barry's immensely lyrical style.

So liking Broken Arrow as well as James Bond doesn't seem so weird now. cool
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  2. There are actually two Zimmer scores referring to Barry (I don't mention Born Free, which he rearranged in Madagascar) - Pearl Harbor sounds a lot like Hannover Street or even Enigma in its more romantic moments and Inception has a Bond feel to it.

  3. Was very sad when I heard the news last Monday, he was a true Titan.

A thank you to Onyabirri over at FSM for posting this fantastic interview with John Barry from the New York based radio show WNYC 'Spinnin On Air', excellent and insightful, the DJ also plays some stuff besides the usual Bond and Dances With Wolves, highly recommended.

    JOHN BARRY INTERVIEW

It's in two parts, nearly two hours worth.

Wondering if anyone here gave this a listen? It's a very good interview.

BAFTA's 'In Memorium' segment included John Barry and was accompanied by his theme to Out of Africa.

I saw that - very fitting for Barry to get "top billing" (i.e., was first to be remembered) and for BAFTA to then use his music as the underscore to the whole segment.

    Here's a rarity I'd never heard before...

    SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON

It's a "pop" version of one of the tracks contained in the film and ( I think? ) contains Alan Haven on Hammond organ, it's still a very creepy and spooky tune though.

So there's this massive memorial concert in the RAH June 20th. Guests include Shirley Bassey, Michael Caine, David Arnold and George Martin.

Sounds like an amazing event, especially if you're a Barry fan.

So who is going? Tim, I know money's tight for you and all that, but isn't that something for you?
    I am extremely serious.

It is. Funny enough I've seen all of them, Michael Caine at Barry's concert in 98 ( i saw David Arnold during the interval ), George Martin at Barry's concert in 99 and Shirley Bassey at Glastonbury a few years ago, speaking of which it'll be around that time, I can't make any commitment yet.

Nice, but I'm not able to attend. We had a concert in Ghent anyway. I'm sure this'll be more massive though.

I decided at the last moment that I had to go to the RAH John Barry Memorial concert in June, Mel is coming with me.

I wish I hadn't left it so late, only managed to get tickets for the Circle.

Love KING KONG, like CHAPLIN a lot, not very keen on HIGH ROAD TO CHINA but it does have some moments, BORN FREE is very charming and the theme is quite rightly regarded as an evergreen classic.

For a few days I listened a couple of Barry scores for the first time.

King Kong: Nothing memorable. The love theme is nice, but average.

Raise the Tianic: Gorgeous. Rich, majestous, great recording. My favourite!

The Specialist: Repetitive but a mix between Bond and Body Heat, wich it means is terrific.

Chaplin: Charming but I was not in the mood.

Scarlett Letter : Repetitive ( I guess like all Barry scores) but with full of romanticism and sexual tension.

Lion in winter I'm not sure I will enjoy it. But I have to listen..it is a MUST.

I think "The Living daylights" is still my Barry favourite score. it has EVERYTHING!

THE LION IN WINTER is a stunning score with amongst the best choral writing I've heard in a film score, let me know what you think Jordi?

p.s. KING KONG - "nothing memorable" dizzy confused

I'm not a fan of choral writting when they are used with not a big orchestra.

Then you miss the joys of subtlety, not that all of TLIW is subtle, there's plenty of big moments.

    Crash - Mark Isham

Outside of the spectacular new-age vocal highlights, the score doesn't really make an impression.

    Wrong thread, Kevin! smile

As you may know, this is one of my favourite scores ever, and it just keeps growing and growing every time I listen to it. If you don't like it, that's fine, but I suggest giving it a few more chances.
