According to a poster at FSM Barry's non-film score album from 1976, AMERICANS is getting released by Universal Jazz France on November 9th.

If true ( I see no reason why not? ) this is FANTASTIC news! One of my very favourite albums by the composer. cool

    Hooray!

You're in for a treat James, it's a great album.

I bought the LP when it was released....and HATED it!!! It didn't sound like any Barry I'd heard at that point in my life, it's funny how our taste change and evolve over the years.

    Kind of!?

Going backwards there's a hint of Midnight Cowboy and Petulia, looking forwards it harks to Hammett, Body Heat and the like.

Right now this is the album I'm looking forward to most this year.

According to the JB e-groups there were two tracks not included on the original release ( probably due to the constraints of LP running time? ), one of which was used for a US Lincoln Car commercial which won an award for best music to a commercial.

I'll not hold my breath that these will see the light of day on the new CD relese.

John Barry to receive ‘The Max Steiner Award"

Legendary composer John Barry will be in attendance and receive a brand new film music award, The Max Steiner Award, during the gala concert ‘Hollywood in Vienna’ at the Wiener Konzerthaus on October 14. The ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester will perform music by Steiner, Barry and others during the event, where other guests include Austrian composer Harald Kloser (who just wrote the screenplay, produced and composed the score for Roland Emmerich’s new disaster epic, 2012), composer Bruce Broughton (Silverado, Tombstone, Young Sherlock Holmes) conductors John Axelrod and Nicholas Dodd.

    SUNSILK

A popular piece of music in advertising, it was used by Sunsilk well into the 1980's, Barry eventually developed this theme into a full bodied arrangement which appeared on various compilations.

Indeed. I would be awesome to see him return to the film scoring scene, like Marvin Hamlisch or David Shire in recent years. I also hope things are looking up for his wife, who I understand had some health issues recently.

It's an excellent song! Isn't it written by David Arnold, though, not John Barry?

No. It's John Barry and Don Black. The album does feature two songs by Arnold and Black and Arnold produced the album.

I haven't heard it yet but over at FSM there was talk that one of the Arnold/Black songs features a melody from Quantum of Solace and could be the unused theme song!?

Ah, sorry, I didn't actually click the link above and listen to the song...I just assumed we were talking about the same song. THIS is the song I found excellent, and that IS written by Arnold:

The Performance is truly an amazing album.
Besides Bassey perfect voice (even at 72 years), having the Guv'nor's and Arnold's print make it all the more perfect. If there is any justice in this world she needs to do the next bond song. cool

I think if Arnold had any say in it, I'm sure he would hire Bassey in an instant for the next Bond song, unfortunately it's a long time since the good old days when the Likes of John Barry, Conti, Hamlisch etc were allowed to do their thing uninterrupted.

5 years ago i wouldn't agree on the state of things today being actually shit, but when Elfman gets replaced by Haslinger you can easily assume that something is going terribly wrong.

I think things have been bad for a long time but anyway, I was talking about James Bond songs not scores in general.

It looks like it's made up from his scores to Elizabeth Taylor In London, Four In The Morning and some of his early pop stuff, all of which I have on various albums. There's definitely great material there if it's cheaply available!?
