Well it seems the Varese is still for sale, so if I go for that one, would I regret not going for the Intrada? I don't need all of the music, as I've been a little disappointed with previous expanded albums. Just the best presentation is all I need.

  2. I'm still on the fence whether to get the Varese or the Intrada. Seeing it's not a limited release I'll have a listen of both and make my mind up then.

come on, you know the theme dude. Excellent catchy theme, and I like my Varese version. Of course it's your decision.

  4. Correct, I seem to have an overture of that score on one of my Jerry compilations and I had forgotten about it.

Wonderful score. But very happy with the album I already have.
  5. Don't like this one much and I'm happy with the CD-R I have.

  8. It's one of my favourite Goldsmith scores, which I owned not so legally for years, and I need to have it to understand the score properly, since I want to write a proper review of it.

I think that Tora! Tora! Tora! is the score that, in mainstream Hollywood history, understood the Japanese culture the best.

    Indeed! It's a superb film.

After I watched PEARL HARBOR for the first ( and believe me, the last time! ) I watched Tora! Tora! Tora! a few days later, it helped to wash the unpleasant memory of that crap away.

  11. It's funny, I have both Tora! Tora! Tora! and Pearl Harbor on DVD. And the Pearl Harbor version is the 3-DVD "Special Edition". I have had it for years - and i have yet to watch it. I would probably just skip to the actual attack.

I can't believe that there's enough emotion in the whole of that film than there is in a couple of minutes of the older film.

Whilst we are on the subject of Pearl Harbor, I recommend Gordon W. Prange's book "At Dawn We Slept"

    http://www.amazon.com/At-Dawn-We-Slept- … roduct_top

The "definitive" version of events. It's quite a dense book to get through but it is an absorbing read.

It is the kind of book I would absorb too Alan ( if only I could get past a pile of eight books I have and want to read waiting for me on my shelf ).

The attack in PEARL HARBOR is very well done, without a doubt a highlight but the rest of the film is soul destroyingly abysmal and a script ( it can barely be called that ) that not even the greatest of actors let alone Ben Afflicted could make sound anything less than intellectualy insulting, someone would have to pay me a decent hourly wage to sit through this rubbish again.

The problem with PEARL HARBOR is that there's TOO MUCH emotion in it. Too saccharine, overblown and sugar sweet. Never seen TORA!, however (always found that name funny, as it was the name of an older neighbour woman when I was a kid, where I used to go over for sweets etc.).

I probably will. I know that the battle/aireal footage is often used as stock footage in other films. It can't have been cheap producing those scenes.

  13. Those battle/aerial scenes are great - partly because they are "real".

And it looked at one point some of the ground stunt men had a very close call when a plane crashes into a fuel tank and it all exploded.

Can I just say that it won't come as a surprise I like Pearl Harbor a lot. You see, I have awful taste in film and all that wink , but really I think the film should've ended after the attack, because the heroic 'yanks save the day' ending felt it was solely added to give the national audience something to cheer about, after the ass-whooping they got. It may be too sacharine for some, but you can't deny the whole build-up to the attack and the battle itself is fantastic.

I've watched it a couple of times and I feel it's Bay's most restrained and realistic film.

Gilles, go watch Tora! Tora! Tora!

Thor, 'Tora' translates as TIGER, the Japanese codeword for the surprise attack.

  15. Actually seems that "Tora! Tora! Tora!" was a short for Japanese for "Attack! Attack! Attack!". I need to consult it with IMDb again and ask Miya.

  16. Right:

While "tora" does indeed mean "tiger" in Japanese, the call was an acronym:

totsugeki (sudden attack) - "to" and raigeki ("ra") - Torpedo attack. There were three calls before the action commenced:

To! To! To! (totsugeki seyo - commence the attack)

    Tenkai! (prepare for attack)

Tora! Tora! Tora! (totsugeki - raigeki).

so a good contextual translation would be Now! Now! Now!

I'm getting the Intrada. I have the Varese but now I've heard the comparison between the two and it's clear that the new release sounds amazing. Vastly improved audio mix combined with extra cues is hard to resist!
  18. I've heard 'The Great Train Robbery' twice now and it really doesn't do much for me. So I've decided by not getting it. The main theme is great of course but I already have that on my 'The Omen' compilation.
