I'm a bit surprised there isn't a topic on Uematsu. His knack for melody and incorporating classical and modern instrumentation and composition style is unparalleled. Easily one of the finest video game composers around.

He recently finished scoring the Japanese RPG "Lost Odyssey" which comes out today for the XBOX 360 in the US.

For those of you who aren't familiar with his work, here are a few links I pulled off YouTube.

Theme of Love from FFIV is (IS!) Uematsu's best melody. Unabashedly romantic, sincere and grand orchestral work.
  1. Have you ever heard the mini-opera he wrote for FF VI called 'The Dream Oath - Maria and Drako'? There is a version played by orchestra and singers on one of the Orchestral game live concerts. Clocking at over 20 minutes long it's hauntingly beautiful.

And his orchestrated themes for Lost Odyssey are again of the highest standard, but I don't like the usual synthesized underscore he did for that game.

Indeed, he wrote some pretty legendary stuff for Final Fantasy. How about the 'Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec' album from FF VIII. That is just too brilliant for words.

The synthesized underscore doesn't usually bother me. I think that is mostly because I play a lot of the games he scores (not because he scores them; they're just my type of games), and I become so used to how the music sounds in game that it doesn't bother me when I listen to out of context.
  2. I had never heard of him or his music until this thread and I watched the first video. I am impressed -- this guy seems to know what he is doing.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  3. I enjoy his piano collections of Final Fantasy.
