It's the individual problems and settings that are so frustrating, i.e. beyond my control.

Cailin and I communicated well on both Jitsi and Zoom. We could hear and talk to Joep on Jitsi (telephone-style), but neither see nor hear him on Zoom. We could not hear Drew on Jitsi, but we could on Zoom. We could hear Alan neither on Jitsi nor Zoom untill he got his problems sorted.

So ultimately, I don't think it's any of the video platforms' fault. Maybe one should stick to one platform and then just cross fingers that whoever has issues can sort it out on their own. I like Jitsi because it's free, no time limit and can host 8x8 people, if necessary. So I want to try that again. I can perhaps post a few tips beforehand. It's a very easy interface to use, but sometimes it's just a matter of unmuting the microphone or video buttons at the bottom (while other times, like in Alan's case, it's something far more complicated).
    I am extremely serious.
  1. Jitsi is certainly the platform that appears the less inconvenient but I worry that with Jitsi we may lose participants if they have issues with sound or vision. It's difficult to help those with problems when they can't hear those trying to help them. Writing on scraps of paper isn't the best mode of communication!

Since most people have no issues with Zoom I would recommend that despite the limitations. Unless we are able to come up with solutions to potential problems with Jitsi then there is the chance of people not coming back.

I did read that there is a 3-hour limit on Jitsi video calls. That source was a couple of years old so I am not sure if that is still true.

And it seems that it works best using Chrome as the browser, doesn't like it when some join via the app and doesn't work well if you use a local VPN.

It seems to me that if one did a tally, the problems were 50-50 between Zoom and Jitsi on Saturday (Joep, for example, disappeared completely on Zoom, but at least we could communicate with him via sound on Jitsi). I think it ultimately comes down to the individual computer settings, although you may be right that it works better with Chrome (which is what I use); I haven't tried Jitsi with other browsers.

I'll have to ponder all of this (and what we talked about in the Facebook thread, Alan) until the next time.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. When I use Jitsi on my laptop I get a warning that the requested device (audio) has not been found, so I am assuming this would cause issues if I progressed. I think that I may have denied access to the site for something which has led to this warning being shown. But I can't seem to find where to fix this.

However, on my Chromebook everything seems to be 'green to go', so I may use this for chatting in future.

Sometime technology sucks. On the Herrmann/Hitchcock webinar last night I could hear Steven C. Smith just fine but I couldn't hear any of the clips that were played. Although he was in LA the people running the webinar, and playing the clips, were based in NY. Other people had sound issues too but we seemed to be in the minority. I don't think that the issue was with me this time but having another audio problem was not what I needed.

Luckily the webinar was recorded and I can watch it back within the next 7 days.

  3. What was the coolest thing about that duo that you learned from the webinar?

A lot of what was said in the webinar is well-known information but one thing that I didn't know was that Herrmann and Hitchcock met about 10 years before they started their collaboration. It would have been interesting if they had started collaborating earlier than they actually did.

BTW, the recording of the webinar wasn't much better than the live version! I could now see the clips and hear the audio - things that I couldn't see before - but now the audio and video was out of sync by about 1 second. So, whenever Steven Smith would highlight an upcoming clip for how well Herrmann mirrored what was happening on screen, it was completely wasted on me!

But I did enjoy listening to Steven C. Smith talk about Herrmann: I just love his Herrmann biography.

Just had a chat with Joep to confirm a set-up on Jitsi that's going to work for me.

My Chromebook's webcam is so much better than my laptop so the Chromebook it is. It's a lot lighter than my laptop so if our chats develop to giving tours around our houses then I'm set. wink

And Jitsi seems easy to use.

    Ready for another meet-up, guys?

The FIFTH video get-together will be this coming Friday, September 18, at 19:00 (7 PM) local Oslo time.

    The link is https://meet.jit.si/MainTitlesandFSMGet-together

If you have any sound or video issues, be sure to check that your settings are correct. Both the microphone and video buttons should be ticked-off, like this:

First of all I just wanted to say that I have a set up on my Chromebook that works perfectly but I am trying to sort out the issue I have on my laptop but because it is bugging me.

When I go to the meeting page my microphone isn't ticked and I get an amber strap along the bottom of the screen saying

"Audio error: Requested device(s) was/were not found: audio"

There's no way for me to tick the microphone icon to sort this out. It seems that the site isn't seeing my microphone. Could it be that I refused access to the microphone when I first set this up and do I need to try and change the 'do not allow access' status in Chrome to give the site access to the microphone? If so, anyone know how I do this?

  7. Ah, ok.

I've been playing around with settings and things and it seems that everything is green when I access the site with my external microphone is plugged in but the audio is 'missing' when it is not plugged in and I rely on my internal microphone.

So, there must be a setting somewhere where I can choose which microphone to use when I access the site...but it's trying to find that place in the settings. It's not obvious from the usual places in the Chrome settings...

When I click the small "v" by the microphne icon, I get to choose which audio source I want to use -- whether external or internal mikes. Like this: http://celluloidtunes.no/_oldsite/non-w … jitsi2.jpg

I'm not sure why this window doesn't display for you.

I have to have the external microphone plugged in so that the microphone is working in order for me to choose the audio source but I am trying to find out where I can change the default audio source.

  9. Sorted.

I had to go into the Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound and then to the Recording tab. The laptop's microphone had been disabled. Once I had enabled it the site worked fine.

  10. Sadly, I'm out. I already promised to try and come to a friend's performance of a choral piece (she's in the choir, not the composer) at the date.

If it turns out to be just Alan and I, that's perfectly fine. But then I might post in the FSM thread, asking them to join early, since two hours with just you and me, Alan, is a bit on the long side, LOL! smile

Yes, I have checked that as well. It somehow has the do with my laptop´ refusal to run webcam software, an error which ocurred after an reinstallation of the enitre system.

I think it should be great fun to do some sort of score association game during the meet. You know, the ´what the first score that comes to mind when you say ´....´´. I am not going to prepare it up front, but would like to make up it along the way. We´ll see if that works.
