  1. WORLD PREMIERE RECORDING:

    Endless Night
    Music by Bernard Herrmann
    Music Conducted by Fernando Velázquez
Performed by the Basque National Orchestra

Quartet Records is proud to present its second world premiere recording of a previously unreleased classic Bernard Herrmann score, following the release of THE BRIDE WORE BLACK in 2018.

Herrmann’s score for ENDLESS NIGHT looks both forward and backward in his career. Its romantic elements recall passages from THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR and VERTIGO, while its more austere aspects anticipate the more motivic-based writing of IT’S ALIVE and SISTERS. To suggest the menace beneath the romance, Herrmann used a Moog synthesizer for its wailing and otherworldly timbres. Some of the score is based on a setting of words from William Blake’s “Auguries of Innocence”. There is also an achingly beautiful love theme, used by Herrmann as a “red herring” in this intriguing plot, and several cues that rely on color (Herrmann was, of course, a master orchestrator) and staid harmonic progressions for their chilling effect.

Reconstructed from Herrmann’s original manuscript (provided by the publisher), the music is conducted by prestigious composer/conductor Fernando Velázquez, performed by the Basque National Orchestra, with original Moog synthesizer sessions played by Toni Saigi. We also had the incredibly good fortune of securing the magnificent voice of classical soprano Núria Rial for the vocals.

Recorded on the OSE orchestra stage in September 2019 by Marc Blanes, with additional Moog sessions in 2020, the album was produced by Edouard Dubois and Jose M. Benitez (with executive production entirely by Quartet Records) and mastered by Chris Malone. The booklet includes extensive liner notes by associate producer Frank K. DeWald, who discusses both film and score.

  2. I am interested to hear this one as I don't recall much about the music written for this film. Hearing a "new" Herrmann score is always something worth celebrating.

This is the only one of Quartet's batch that I'm interested in, as I own all the others in their superior OST formats.

A premiere release of anything is great. I did like their previous re-recording of Herrmann's THE BRIDE WORE BLACK, although it's far too long. If you take away the bonus tracks from this, it seems to be a far more manageable listening experience despite its supposed C&C. Looking forward to hearing it.
    I am extremely serious.
  3. Yes, it's so rare that any previously-unreleased music gets a release - despite there being a lot if titles about that could do with a release of any sort.

You mention in your customary dig at expanded releases about the "superior" OST formats. I saw a brief discussion over on FSM that there was a question as to whether the stereo tracks for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly were, in fact, the original soundtrack. I'd always assumed that they were - Morricone's music sometimes doesn't lend itself to being re-recorded faithfully as the original. And, without forensically comparing that album with the movie, they seemed one and the same.

It would be interesting if these mono tracks here in the Quartet release were subtly difference to what I was used to.

I heard the same. I actually have the GDM release of GBU (about 60 minutes), and I've been meaning to whittle it down the OST programme for better flow (although it works reasonably well in its 60-minute program too). It appears you can do that easily, which is quite rare.

  4. Is anyone here going to go for this one? If not, I would be interested to know why not. No interest in the composer or movie? Or another reason.

Let's assume some won't want it because it's too much music.)

  5. Money, mostly, in my case. I haven't actually made a serious score purchase for age.

  6. Yes, money is always an issue. It amazes me on the FSM board the number of CDs some buy every month (and post their lists on the 'what have you bought this month' threads.

  7. This will be in my shopping trolley at some point... probably in the new year when I've had another payday smile I'll most likely pick it up along with the bride wore black. Can't stand the film, but I enjoy the music, and I think these re-recording projects should be supported as much as possible.
  8. Agree with the sentiment that rerecordings should be supported by people, if at all possible.
