  1. It's the Easter weekend Saturday and my daughter would like a couple of big chocolate Easter eggs. Saturday is the usual day for the weekly shop so 'no problem', I thought.

But, as far as the supermarkets are concerned, Easter has passed and they have taken all the Easter eggs off the shelves!

My daughter was so disappointed. OK, she's 24 so it's not as big a deal as it could have been. And there's plenty of Mini eggs to buy but that's not the point.

    Grrrr!

Ha, ha......love the twist about her being 24 years old. Then again, my own mom put up Christmas stockings for me and my siblings untill we were way up in our 30s (even if we told her not to), so I guess I can relate to that.

Strange that they've removed Easter stock from the stores. Over here, they tend to linger long after Easter - usually at discount prices.

My moan of the day: I've noticed a degree of aggression these last few days -- on social media, on forums, whatever. People don't respond or respond with anger. Could be the combination of Easter holiday and covid, I don't know. But it's a weird "atmosphere" everywhere I turn.

    Don't start with this! wink

If you look back at the number of topics there have been added to in the last 24 hours I'd say it's pretty good. Particularly when you consider it's really only 4-5 of us who have been posting regularly in that time.

I've not really noticed that much additional aggression on social media/messageboards but you can certainly see similar attitude changes more generally in the news.

I was reading yesterday that the murder rates in the US have gone a lot higher over the last 12 months. This is probably due, in part, to police being diverted away from their usual law enforcement duties but there must be a portion that's down to just people being on a shorter fuse that before?

There is something in the air alright.

Last night, I attended an FSM Zoom meeting. I showed a scene from BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (the graveyard scene). Some interesting discussion ensued. After that, I wanted to show the tree discovery scene from TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, but one of the participants - James - said "please don't". Right out of the blue. And then it spiralled from there.

There was some bizarre, unspoken aggression in that meeting that I haven't seen before. And for no particular reason.

  5. That's unfortunate Thor. Which James do you mean?

I wonder if the Zoom meeting evolve into something more the longer the go on? They start of being so novel that everyone who participates are filled with novelty of the whole technology and the weirdness of chatting with like-minded individuals. Then, once that initial 'honeymoon' period has worn off some of the traits seen on the messageboards begins to appear?

Not having been there it's difficult trying to fathom what the dynamic was. Maybe it will be mentioned on the FSM board by someone?

Thor, do you think it's something we need to keep an eye on on our chats? Ours are a lot more infrequent than Stephen's and so perhaps we haven't gone as far down that evolutionary path?

  6. I am reading about what happened at Stephen's Zoom meeting Thor. It sounds like they laid into you last night and on the messageboard too.

One particular comment on the messageboard - 'I understand you have your own Friday night Zoom group (Cheers) where you all drink and do this, Please don't bring that element to our group.' - makes it sound like we are all some sort of drunken rabble! Which ruffled my feathers a bit!

It's OK. I see from the FSM messageboard thread who James is. I don't think that I know who he is.

  8. It's interesting reading the relevant topic over at FSM:

https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/ … ;archive=0 (after the image of the Zoom page and bomb(!)

It seems that the FSM consensus is that they have sensible conversations about film music on their Zoom calls whilst we have a good piss-up and talk about beer whilst having incoherent slagging matches with each other.

FSM always did have a bit of a reputation to assume to be a bit elitist (no offense to any FSM-i dwelling here. I am speaking in general). I remember well the almost angrily dismissive and patronising tone some of Thomas' reviews were met with, as if they didn't meet some completely arbitrary "professional" standard.

While FSM is brimming with enthusiasts and people of great knowledge on the topic, I do at times get the feeling they forget
    1) it's a hobby, no one is getting paid
    2) it's the nichest niche in Nichetown. No one else in the world [I]cares[i].
    3) it. Is. Supposed. To. Be. FUN.

I'm really sorry to hear about all this Thor. I had a read through that FSM thread and it really doesn't sound like the sort of Zoom call I'd be interested taking part in.

I'm more-or-less half cut by 10pm on a Saturday too! Fucking bite me. rolleyes

I mean, I can understand the irritation of being around drunk people when you're cold sober, but I was really just in a good, spirited mood (no pun intended) -- like any and all chats we've had over here. Rambled a bit, sure, but it's not like I called people names or anything. There was no malice involved. So I think the criticism was WAY out of proportion with the "transgression". Lots of alcohol shaming going on. It's not often that I get hurt by comments, but this was one such case, as it wasn't really a criticism of anything I said, but of my personality (inebriated personality, but still). I've sorta decided not to partake in any of Stephen's dry meetings ever again, but we'll see.

In any case....thank God for the Maintitles/Cheers meetings, I say.

Incidentally, this thread topic rang a bell with me, and indeed it seems like we did a whole thread series on things that annoy us a few years back, LOL!:

Ah, so we did. Sorry about that. Isn't it annoying when people start a topic when there's already a perfectly good one? Or when someone points out such a previous topic? wink
