Who plays an instrument? Who writes music? Let's talk about composition and instruments and such.

Myself... I am completely self taught on piano. I can read music. I just hate performing... I prefer writing and transcribing other scores. I work in Logic Pro X and am lucky to have been gifted some great sample libraries from a friend who works for a studio back home (shh!).

I've spent a lot of my lonely time during lockdown practising piano but also creating mock-ups of some favourite cues. I'll share some of the others soon but I have spent the past week, on and off, beginning to re-create End Credits from E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. I've managed to get the first 50 secs done... and it's not mixed properly yet. Let me know what you think!

  1. A bit of a pointless post because I can't play any instruments - except for the kazoo.

I'd be interested to know from those that can play an instrument whether there were instruments in the house when they were young and so starting the instrument was a natural thing. Or was starting playing via lessons outside the home environment.

Growing up there was no opportunity to take up an instrument at home. School was probably the place where the opportunity would have presented itself best. And I am sure that if I had said I wanted to try an instrument at that time then my parents would have given me the opportunity to try something. But I just never wanted to try anything.

I've never managed to get Soundcloud to play on Chrome. But I will take a listen when I get the chance to on another browser...

Ah, I had an extension in Chrome that disabled HTML5 autoplay and I had to switch it off for it to play SoundCloud clips.

I took a listen. Very impressive. Sounded great. Shame it stopped just when it was just about to get exciting. wink

Thank you. Oh I will continue... it's a long process! I'll get another minute done by the end of next week hopefully.

I just found an incomplete mock-up of Home Alone that I attempted, appropriately, last Christmas. Never finished it (and there are a few instruments missing).

Are the sample libraries you have particularly good? The quality of most of them are just as good as many scores for low-budget movies.

This is so amazingly cool Lee! I play piano sometimes. I took 3 years of lessons in junior high/high school. I was a late bloomer with learning to play music. My parents started my younger sister on piano, and I was really interested and took to it more than she did, so started taking lessons when they noticed I was loving it. I wish I'd been more dedicated to keep it up in college, but only music students had access to practice rooms (and I was not a music major). I'm at a mostly beginner-intermediate level still and but really enjoy playing immensely when I do sit down, but I don't make the time right now. I seem to ebb and flow between art or music in my life. Some seasons I'm drawing or painting a lot, and other seasons I'm playing music more, it seems weird to me that I can't seem to prioritize both creative outlets simultaneously.

That's awesome, Lee. Did you really make those, or are you just having a go? For the E.T. one, the brass is a little loud compared to the soft piano, but otherwise it sounds great. Professional, even. Have you composed anything of your own?

I talked a little about my own musical skill (or lack thereof) in the 'passions' thread. Not much to brag about, compared to this.
    I am extremely serious.

It sounds really great!! Just like it! Even with the couple of instruments missing - I think you could totally trick someone into thinking that was the original! Awesome job!

Did you play the piano on the E.T. clip? That sounded very good as well! Very impressed!

Thanks. Like I said, it's not actually mixed properly yet... if it ever will be. A certain amount of compression will balance things in the end.

I have composed stuff of my own, yes, but not in a long time; I worked with a few student filmmakers when I was at university but I don't think any of my work has survived the years. These little mock-up things started purely as a lockdown hobby.

I did.... but at a MUCH slower tempo with heavy quantisation. I'm nowhere near good enough to play something like this at normal speed biggrin . And I also did left and right hand parts separately (but this is mostly because I like to have them in their own channels to mix and EQ separately).

I am not familiar with this score so, until I listen to the score, there's way of knowing whether it's good or bad. wink

I was quite drunk when I made this last year (lockdown boredom)... I've only just rediscovered it in my YouTube channel studio thing.

The percussion is mixed obnoxiously loud but I think it sounds pretty good considering my condition at the time.

Neat, Lee! As I've said before, you must have some pretty cool software at your disposal.

    Thanks Thor!

Well, I spent some of my savings during lockdown on samples (Cinesamples Brass, Spitfire Strings, etc) because I was so bored.

The thing is, the samples only sound good if you know how to use them and manipulate them. I’ve seen so many people use high-end sample products to make music that ultimately sounds very flat and bad in quality. They seem to think that if the sample itself sounds good, the end result will sound good; you have to put in the work. But I like that challenge.

I have a project coming up for original music, for a short animation that my close colleague has written. Very excited.
