Thought I'd set up a seperate space for the very talented British composer JOBY TALBOT, known mostly for his work on The League Of Gentlemen (tv series, and a motion picture) and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

He's got a new score out now for (what I think is a nature documentary) Arctic Tale. It's a gorgeous little score. Very playful and wondrous. Essentially, if you enjoyed the Hitchhikers score, you're bound to love Arctic Tale. It's got that same magical, epic feel, but without ever getting heavy-handed. Talbot's got a real knack for writing wonderfully transparent music.

You could argue that Arctic Tale isn't quite up there with Fenton's Blue Planet scores, but why would you? Different composers, different styles. Talbot's score is very enjoyable, worth checking out if you get the chance.

After a bit of a lull in enthusiasm for film music at times recently, I must admit I've had it re-ignited by a few very special scores over the past few days, one of which was Talbot's Arctic Tale, which is indeed a magical piece of work, an absolute godsend of a score.

I disagree with Pete - I think it easily matches Fenton's Blue Planet, if fact I think it's vastly superior but that's only a subjective thing of course.

I recently discovered Talbot through his League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse score, and from seeing Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (haven't bought that cd yet though).

Obviously he's written a few classical compositions as well but hopefully he keeps working in film for a long time to come.

I see he's only 37 years old. A very promising composer, and Arctic Tale has me very excited about hearing new music from him in the near future.
  1. Goodness, it's been a while since anyone has posted anything here! Has his output been so low or so bad?

I just wanted to point out to anyone who doesn't hate downloads that Talbot's score for Arctic Tale is available as a download at the beginning of May (in the UK at least). I see there were a couple of comments above at the time the CD was released but it seems to have melted into obscurity since.

Earlier this summer, composer Joby Talbot recorded his score to the new Universal Studios/Illumination animated feature, Sing. Directed by Garth Jennings (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) the film’s scoring session took place at the Newman Scoring Stage at Fox Studios, and we’re delighted to share our exclusive photos from the scoring sessions with our readers!
