Vanilla 1.1.4 is a product of Lussumo. More Information: Documentation, Community Support.

  1. I just found out that A Brief History of Time by Philip Glass, that was recently released on i-tunes US, is about to be released on CD by Orange Mountain Music. Amazon.de states the release date as May 8th whereas German vendor JPC states April 20th.

However this is my last true Holy Grail to see the laser light of a CD player. Great news!

Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  2. DISCONTINUATION ALERT

You have until May 4 to pick up the following from Intrada:

"Decision for Chemistry" / "Sounder" (rejected score) (Alex North)

    :-D Good one!
  4. Something is coming from Varese. From their Facebook page:

So many things are coming! But next Monday, April 27 at noon, we have a very big and very historic announcement. It involves a single release, but it's a six CD set! And boy does it have a story to tell! This is one release that has to stand alone. Film music is supposed to be fun and this one is a blast! We'll see you then, at the Varèse Sarabande web site! Can't wait!! https://www.varesesarabande.com/

  5. Update from Intrada's website on "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold":

    LESS THAN 35 COPIES REMAINING!

Looks like this one won't need to be discontinued (assuming they are going to press another batch and are cutting it off early).

You know, I've yet to listen to the samples.

  6. Upcoming titles from LLLR's:

It's kind of an odd month with the first being on a Friday and our next release being next Tuesday. We only have 2 release dates in May, but 3 in June...so June will be a busy month.

We are still waiting on a number of titles to get the final sign off on. Some of you have noticed that our catalog numbers are all over the place. That's due to some titles (a few that were supposed to come out in 2014) taking some time to be signed off on for one reason or another.

LLLCD 1331 - waiting on actor approval of image (a pet project of mine)
LLLCD 1333 - waiting on studio approval (Golden Age Classic)
LLLCD 1335 - waiting on production company approval (even though we have the record label and studio singed off on this one). Missed the anniversary last year. Very frustrating.
LLLCD 1350 - waiting on actor/director/producer approval, then studio and record company approval. MEGA HUGE IMPORTANT RELEASE!!!!!
LLLCD 1353 - waiting on studio approval (JW release)

So, we have thousands and thousands of dollars tied up with these projects and have no product to show for them yet. It's the part of this biz that can nearly break one's spirit, but we keep on truckin'.

Since I am playing hooky on Friday May 1, here y'all go:

  7. A note from Kritzerland Records:

Hi, everyone! Yes, it's hard to believe but Kritzerland is celebrating its tenth anniversary. We began recording our first album in May of 2005 and it's been an incredible roller coaster ride ever since. Kritzerland has for the last ten years released some amazing CDs (over 150 of 'em). We've done world premiere film score releases by the likes of Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Newman, Elmer Bernstein, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Tiomkin, Alex North, David Shire, Georges Delerue, Michel Legrand, Andre Previn, Henry Mancini, Marvin Hamlisch, Pino Donaggio, Victor Young, David Raksin, John Barry, Burt Bacharach, Dave Grusin and many, many others. We've released scores to such all-time classic films as It's a Wonderful Life, Laura, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Carrie, A Place in the Sun, Heaven Can Wait, Summer and Smoke, How Green Was My Valley, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Love With the Proper Stranger, Summer and Smoke, A Man and a Woman, Bananas, Tom Jones, Casino Royale, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, to name just a handful.

Additionally, we've reissued such great cast albums as A Time for Singing, Illya, Darling, Anya, House of Flowers, Show Girl, the London cast albums of Promises, Promises, Gone With the Wind, Carnival and Camelot, and our brand new remixes of Follies (which Stephen Sondheim called "A miracle"), Promises, Promises and Sugar. In the film musical world we've done definitive releases for Centennial Summer and Stormy Weather and have many others in the pipeline.

We've done amazing projects with Paramount, Fox, MGM/UA and a handful of others, but we simply must get into other studios now and that will take a huge infusion of cash. Kritzerland has one owner and was started on a wing and a prayer. Literally every penny that comes in goes to fund the next projects. And this is, we hope, where you can help us get to the next level in terms of dealing with new studios and licensors. We've created an Indiegogo campaign and let me tell you about it.

We are looking to raise $80,000. That may seem like a lot, but that's what it's going to take for us to step up to the plate at other studios and lock up a lot of projects at once. Waving a big check is what they respond to. We already have many upcoming projects from Fox, but other studios have so many amazing scores that are just languishing that we know you would love - from both Golden and Silver Age. Those who know and love Kritzerland know that we're not about the more recent scores - we leave those pretty much to others. We have contacts now at various studios and they are willing to license to us. We also have other cast album reissues we'd like to pursue. And we'd also occasionally like to get back to doing original recordings. Of course raising even more than our target amount would be incredible and enable us to lock up even more things. The one thing we can assure you is that every penny of what is raised will go into getting projects for us - none of it is salary or goes into anyone's pocket. This is all about getting amazing music out in the world to you, our wonderful collectors.

We have devised a set of perks that we hope will make contributing fun and easy - in essence, on certain perks you're contributing now by making your CD purchases in advance and at a considerable savings and that includes free postage. For the higher perks you get your names in the thank you section of our CD booklets and website, and for those who have discretionary cash to use, you can even become a co-producer or an executive producer who is credited in our booklets. But mostly we hope you'll contribute because you've loved the projects we've done and appreciate the care we put into them. But mostly we hope you'll contribute because you've loved the projects we've done and appreciate the care we put into them. You'll be able to let us know if your interests are soundtrack only, cast albums and film musicals - or both.

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/krit … /x/9165600

Even if we don't reach our ultimate goal and beyond, whatever money comes in will go straight to the acquisition of new projects and new relationships with studios and companies.

The future holds incredible possibilities, and with your help we can continue bringing to fruition worthwhile projects like the ones listed above and also the introduction of a new line The Elite Collection. Rather than just forego certain classic soundtrack releases and film musical releases that we know will not sell a full 1000-copy run, we will begin the Elite Collection. This will mostly be limited to the film musicals that many, but not enough of us, love. It would be criminal to let these continue to gather dust, so for these releases we will do a limited edition of 500 copies at $39.98 in special packaging, extended booklets and the full-out treatment they deserve. But please note - those who help fund our campaign at levels where CDs are involved will get those special releases at our usual price of 19.98.

We are always striving to find new ways and new avenues for film music releases and theater music releases. When Kritzerland began, we were at the forefront of labels who refused to have conventional distribution - we kind of were amongst the leaders in that regard because we knew the big music chains were on their way out. It was scary at the start, and many told us we were being really stupid, but in the end, they all followed us to this brave new world. The soundtrack and cast album reissue market, whether straight reissues or even world premiere releases, has always been a niche market. The challenges are many, the profit return isn't huge but has kept us going and with your help will keep us going well into the future. We meet challenges head on at Kritzerland and I, as the owner, am known for being relentless in getting projects I really want. There are many other film music labels nowadays, but we have what I hope is a unique presence and a unique vision and from the beginning we've gotten amazing response to what we do. And now, it's time to take Kritzerland to the next level.

We understand how many of these campaigns there are and how many are asking for your dollars. Again, we've tried to make the perks make sense - for most of the perks you're not just getting a cup or a thing, you're getting actual product and at a savings. We hope that's what sets us apart a little. And we completely understand if you aren't able to help, but you know what - you still can. If you love what we do, just spread the word on Facebook and Twitter and all over social media. It's easy to share right from this very page. Together we can do this and together we can all win the real prize - the music that has shaped our lives. Thank you all so much in advance.

One final note: We're told by the Indiegogo experts (yes, there are Indiegogo experts!) that the first two days of funding are the most important, as they set the tone - people tend to fund faster if the first two days are very healthy. So, please, if you're leaning towards helping do it in the first two days. Do you know that if only 1000 people on our mailing list of close to 3,000 did the $100 perk, which is a great money saving deal, we would be well over our goal! But anything works and it's a dream that is completely possible. So, here we Kritzerland a GoGo!

  9. DISCONTINUATION ALERT

You have until May 18 to get this from Intrada:
"Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" (David Newman)

In my opinion, one of his top five scores. Unfortunately, it didn't even last a year.

  10. People are speculating at the upcoming Williams release from LLLR. MV chimed into today with some info' on various titles by the composer:

I can say this right now:

Stanley and Iris is controlled by Varese in perp (I think Pressumed Innocent is as well)

Saving Private Ryan is so near complete it's not worth doing

JFK is pretty much complete. It was an odd score to record being that it wasn't scored to picture. It may happen some day, but I honestly do not know how to approach it.

How much music is there left from Sleepers? Tibet? Geisha? Enough to warrant an expanded release?

UME controls the JP scores. We tried but they didn't want to relinquish rights at the time.

On June 1 you will find out what it is

This is the nerdiest thing I've read all day.
  11. A remastered re-issue for fans of older scores:

BYU/FMA, Screen Archives Entertainment and Chelsea Rialto Studios are proud to announce the newly remastered release in early June 2015 of Max Steiner’s thundering soundtrack score to John Ford’s THE SEARCHERS.

Released by Warner Bros. in 1956, John Ford and Merian C. Cooper’s production of THE SEARCHERS is one of the great iconic westerns of American cinema and Max Steiner’s score has gained legendary status in its own right. Steiner had written music for dozens of westerns but this was, by far, his most dynamic and muscular exercise in musical storytelling. From his deft interpolation of Stan Jones’ title song as well as the traditional melody “Lorena” to his lyrical original “Indian Idyll,” to the supremely thrilling action sequences, Max Steiner’s music for THE SEARCHERS is at times pastoral, personal and relentless within the space of twelve reels. Recorded at the famed Goldwyn Stage, the score was orchestrated by Steiner’s longtime colleague Murray Cutter and conducted by the composer.

This CD presents the complete score to THE SEARCHERS composed by Max Steiner and the title song by Stan Jones as sung by the Sons of the Pioneers. The score was preserved on acetate discs in the Steiner Collection at Brigham Young University and has been newly remastered by Chelsea Rialto Studios. As a bonus, we have compiled outtake choruses of “The Searchers” into a final vocal encore by the Sons of the Pioneers.

The album includes a 32 page book with notes by James V. D'Arc and Ray Faiola. Disc mastering by Ray Faiola, Chelsea Rialto Studios. Package design by Jim Titus.

A Brigham Young University Film Music Archive Production. All proceeds from this limited edition compact disc go towards the acquisition, preservation of film music elements and public future releases.

  12. Kritzerland's released of "White Whitch Doctor" is due to be announced any day now. Some quick words about it from Kimmel:

And just to say that for any Herrmann fan who hasn't heard White Witch Doctor, it is an absolutely amazing score from start to finish - in that great push-pull stereo sound from Fox. Both Alfred Newman and Daryl F. Zanuck wrote loving praises to this score. It kind of has every signature Herrmann thing, and some of it definitely looks forward to what he'd do for certain Journey to the Center of the Earth cues with his use of the serpent.

  13. Intrada will be releasing a 2CD set of the score to "Jaws 3-D".

In 2007 Intrada released the one CD contents, I think duplicated the old LP, back in 2007. It has since sold out.

A copy somehow leaked to eBay. Two threads have been locked at FSM about it. Somebody got a hold of it, what one user suggests was a promo copy since the barcode had a punch out, and instead of being polite, dumped it on eBay. There's some asshat out there waiting for a serious whoopin'.

  14. An update today from Doug on the Intrada forum about the situation:

In the bizarre department, one of our upcoming Universal/UMG titles has been announced - prematurely - by, quite literally, a thief. Upon our licensing and having manufactured the title, it appears someone on the "inside" gained access to our product before it was delivered to us and attempted to sell copies via eBay on his/her own. Skimming off the top, as they say. All parties involved are working now to handle the affair. Obviously this person is in need of disciplinary action, i.e., being fired from whatever position they hold... and keelhauled.

It all makes for a week that feels just plain weird. I'm okay if we don't have another one like it for awhile. In any case, pretend next week's announcement of Jaws 3-D comes as a total surprise to you. At least its companion release should be ... knock on wood.

  15. New from Music Box Records:

    LE CASSE (THE BURGLARS) (1971)
    Music Composed by Ennio Morricone
    Orchestra Conducted by Bruno Nicolai

    Limited edition of 1000 units.
New remastered edition supervised by Claudio Fuiano. Including six bonus tracks.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Nicolas Magenham.

    Ref: MBR-066
    Release Date: in stock

Released in 1971, Le Casse (The Burglars), directed by Henri Verneuil (Guns for San Sebastian, The Sicilian Clan), tells the story of Azad (Belmondo) and his gang who, after having broken into a luxurious villa in Athens, seek to shake off Zacharia (Omar Sharif), a corrupt and sadistic policeman. This film marked the beginnings of a style of cinema calibrated to highlight the acting qualities and physical performance of the star Jean-Paul Belmondo, as well as a certain portrayal of a notion of virility in the popular culture of the era. This type of cinema reached its apogee with Peur sur la ville, directed by the same Henri Verneuil, followed by other successes from celebrity directors of the seventies and eighties, such as Georges Lautner and Jacques Deray.

It is not the overarching virile dominance of Belmondo that Ennio Morricone's score highlights, in fact quite the contrary. In addition to a very few effective dramatic underscore, Morricone’s contribution is to be found in other places, his music serving instead to bring to the fore the character’s faults, failings coming out first and foremost in regard to women, most notably by means of the love theme which reinforces the tenderness, but also all of the ambiguity which unites Azad and the young Hélène (Nicole Calfan). In regard to Lena the striptease artist (played by Dyan Cannon), Morricone provides two pieces of music for the night-club scenes and the Greek restaurant. Since much of the movie's action took place in a hotel where there was background music, Verneuil asked him to write beautifully-crafted pastiche pieces from musical masters of the era (such as Mantovani and Zacharias), with its soothing strings.

For those who missed the previous GDM edition released in 2006, Music Box Records is pleased to reissue the complete soundtrack of Le Casse (The Burglars) composed by Ennio Morricone and conducted by Bruno Nicolai. Supervised and mastered by Claudio Fuiano, this present edition also includes six bonus tracks. Four songs, both performed by Mireille Mathieu and Astrud Gilberto, were released on 45rpm singles to coincide with the launch of the film at that time. A pop reprise of the main theme and a previously unreleased version of Rodéo on CD are both conducted by Bruno Nicolai.

MISSISSIPPI MERMAID (LA SIRÈNE DU MISSISSIPI) (1969)
Music Composed and Conducted by Antoine Duhamel

Remastered reissue. Limited edition of 500 units.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Gilles Loison.

    Ref: MBR-065
    Release Date: in stock

Based on the novel Waltz Into Darkness by William Irish, Mississippi Mermaid (La Sirène du Mississipi) is a 1969 stylish thriller written and directed by Francois Truffaut (The 400 Blows, Fahrenheit 451 and Day for Night). It tells the story of Louis Mahé, a French tobacco plantation owner (Jean-Paul Belmondo) who becomes engaged to Marion (Catherine Deneuve), a woman he never met yet corresponded with during his time at Reunion Island. She pretends to be another woman in order to steal his money.

Antoine Duhamel had scored a trio of Truffaut's films between 1968 and 1970 (Baisers Volés, L'Enfant sauvage, an adaptation of music by Vivaldi, and Domicile conjugal, with accents from a later period of Stravinsky). This edition presents the complete original score for Mississippi Mermaid with more than 50 minutes even though only 25 minutes were kept in the original film version. The film’s music is superb for its orchestral-driven score that has some serene moments but also some eerie moments for the film’s suspense. Antoine Duhamel also heightens the Hitcockian vibe with his Bernard Herrmann inspired score with its jagged and anxious strings, recalling a certain atmosphere from Psycho or North by Northwest.

In collaboration with MGM, Music Box Records presents the newly remastered reissue of the complete score for Mississippi Mermaid, featuring the same content previously issued by Milan Records in 1991. The CD comes with an 8-page booklet featuring liner notes by Gilles Loison who discusses the film and the score. The release is limited to 500 units.

We are evaluating the FSM catalog to determine what will stay in print and what will go out of print. This entails checking the contracts (for expirations) as well as the physical parts (booklets, loose discs) and, of course, projecting sales. We're not going to invest money into making hundreds more copies just to use up booklets if they will take 15 years to sell out. Honestly: The vast majority of the titles will not be repressed. But some will be repressed, and one big one (the blue box) will hopefully return as we have the hardcover books in stock, just no slipcases. This sale is in part to pay for those repressings...if we can!

The Elmer box will not return—at least not from us. There's no way we are printing that hardbound book again. Very proud of that one!

Needless to say...the catalog is very important to me. Most titles were undertaken with shockingly little care to commercial prospects—I just wanted them to be available to the public! I still feel that way today. Many of these will never be reissued—I just don't see the demand. Some of them have clearance issues in which all the stars aligned for our edition (but have already un-aligned) that would make it highly unlikely anyone would undertake the effort to reissue them.

I hope people buy and enjoy these!

  21. Intrada will be releasing Christopher Young's score to the 2013 film "Killing Season". Roger said a little about the release:

I just played the disc. It's the first time I've heard this score outside of the film. The composer has done a stunning job of assembling this album. He took a classical approach and assembled the music into several long movements. He also recorded some new things to add into the program. Now it will probably drive the folks who want everything C&C bananas, but if those folks can open their hearts and minds and allow themselves to get absorbed in this musical journey, they'll be richly rewarded! Just a great album. It really showcases the artistry over the function of the music.

Good old Christopher Young. Always been good at assembling proper albums.
