Urgh. I was trying to go for something obscure and I was SURE I had read at some point they lifted one of his themes for that film...but it looks I was wrong. So yeah. Sorry.

  1. Varese Sarabande announces:

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - 8 CD BOX SET

    Original Motion Picture Soundtracks
    Various Artists

    UPC: VLE-9203
    Release Date: 10/16/2015

    LIMITED TO 2000 COPIES
    Available now for pre-order

    $ 99.98

This deluxe package contains all 8 soundtracks from the original series, over 8 hours of music including almost 3 hours of bonus tracks!

New artwork has been commissioned for the set by artist Shawn Conn, and assembling the CD sleeves next to one another forms a larger piece of art. The pictures above include a sample of an individual sleeve from the front and back, as well as the larger piece of art that is created when all 8 sleeves are placed alongside each other. Before you have any nightmares, please don’t worry … the original Matthew Joseph Peak creations are included in the accompanying booklet. The set is then completed with a knitted Freddy sweater encasing the outer box! A truly unique item that ensures the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - 8 CD BOX SET will stand out on any shelf.

The world was introduced to Wes Craven’s Freddy Krueger, (portrayed by Robert Englund), in 1984 with A Nightmare on Elm Street. Krueger was a former child killer seeking revenge against the parents who burned him by haunting the dreams of their teenage children and killing them in their dreams. The series has earned almost half a billion dollars worldwide, and boasts some of the most beloved nightmarish themes from composers including: Charles Bernstein, (Wes Craven’s A Nightmare On Elm Street), Christopher Young, (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), Angelo Badalamenti, (A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors), Craig Safan, (A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Jay Ferguson, (A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), Brian May, (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare), J. Peter Robinson, (Wes Craven’s New Nightmare) and Graeme Revell (Freddy Vs. Jason).

Also included in this set is a suite from the video game featured in the film Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare and the theme from Henry Manfredini’s FRIDAY THE 13TH series, as heard in the film Freddy Vs. Jason (with performances by the band Machine Head).

  2. Sony is re-issuing the old "Home Alone" soundtracki, and for some reason re-titling two tracks. But for those who want more and wish the LLLR's CD wasnt' sold out, good news if you can take a hint; posted on the 16th at the FSM board:

    lol

    You guys might wanna wait

    MV

Trust me -- you guys will want something else later this year...something composer approved, completely remastered by a JW expert with bonus tracks, incredible notes and packaging

    Just sayin'

And for good measure a familiar name in the soundtrack business spoke up:
In the interest in maintaining sanity insofar as is possible, I would advise two things:

    1) Forget about E.T.
    2) Start saving now because it's going to be a stunning 4th quarter for soundtrack collectors.

No CDs this time, but the first in our new line of 180-gram vinyl. It's a reissue of a long out of print Intrada CD in the low-budget horror/fantasy realm by a composer we love in that genre from the mid 80s. Features all new custom art.

    And on "the Rocketeer":

Initially he [Horner] wasn't interested, but that was before expansions like Clear and Present Danger. Presented with it he probably would have been okay. Still trying to work out the details on that one, but it's on the roadmap.

TRY THIS ONE FOR SIZE (1989)

More than 50 minutes of previously unreleased music.

    Release Date: October 2, 2015

Music Box Records presents the World Premiere CD release of Try This One for Size (also known as Sauf votre respect), French-American co-production directed by Guy Hamilton in 1989. The film was the first in a series of four thriller comedies based on the works of James Hadley Chase and produced by Sergio Gobbi. Starring Michael Brandon as insurance investigator Tom Lepski, the series was a light-hearted attempt at producing James Bond-type adventures based on a literary property that was as, if not more popular in France than Fleming's novels. The first film in the series finds Tom Lepski tracking down a valuable statue stolen by brilliant criminal / master of disguise Bradley (played by David Carradine). Director Guy Hamilton offers stylish nods to his most famous film, Goldfinger.

The score was provided by French composer Claude Bolling. Following up with the Bond parallels, the movie opens with the bombastic theme song "The Key" with Dee Dee Bridgewater assuming the Shirley Bassey role for the franchise (she went on to perform other songs for the franchise as well). Several cues are based around this song, but other memorable moments include the brilliant Russian-sounding cues for the central McGuffin, a steamy erotic theme for the relationship of Bradley and his henchwoman, plus a lovable chase theme for Lepski's chase sequences featuring his trademark red Peugeot. On the whole, Bolling's music is a fun, retro-flavored throwback to the classic '60s sounds of the James Bond films with an '80s twist added as flavoring.

The CD comes with an 8-page booklet featuring liner notes by Gergely Hubai who discusses the series, the film and the score. The edition is limited to 350 copies.

    L'ANNÉE SAINTE (1976) • LE MILLE-PATTES FAIT DES CLAQUETTES (1977)
    Two Original Motion Picture Soundtracks
Music Composed and Conducted by Claude Bolling

Remastered edition limited to 350 units.
More than 65 minutes of music.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Gilles Loison.

    Ref: MBR-074
    Release Date: October 2, 2015

In collaboration with Sugar Music, Music Box Records is pleased to present on the same CD two original motion picture soundtracks composed and conducted by Claude Bolling for Jean Girault's films: L’Année sainte (Holy Year) (1976) and Le mille-pattes fait des claquettes (1977).

L’Année sainte tells the story of Max Lambert (Jean Gabin), a former gangster chief who escapes from a prison with his cellmate, Pierre Bizet (Jean-Claude Brialy). They travel to Rome and intend to profit the mass pilgrimage of the Holy Year to recover Max's hidden stash of money. Claude Bolling has composed a very nostalgic score by using a harmonica for the main melody. The music alternates between cool sound of the seventies (electric guitar and drums), parodic church music (organ) suspenseful and psychedelic moods (flute, wah-wah guitar) and his brilliant use of jazzy vibe.

Le mille-pattes fait des claquettes tells the story of a trio of young men (Francis Perrin, Roger Mirmont and Jean-Jacques Moreau) who, during the Second World War, are determined to steal from Goering the Venus de Milo, which he is sending to the Louvre. Claude Bolling has written a score with eclectic moods between big band music and a military march, essential components of any good film that has the Second World War as backdrop.

Limited to 350 units, this release has been fully remastered from the session tapes and includes an 8-page booklet with liner notes by Gilles Loison, discussing the film and the score.

TAIS-TOI QUAND TU PARLES (ZITTO QUANDO PARLI) (1981)
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Armando Trovajoli

World Premiere CD release. More than 55 minutes of previously unreleased music.
Remastered edition supervised by Claudio Fuiano.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Nicolas Magenham.
    Limited edition of 350 units.

    Ref: MBR-075
    Release Date: October 2, 2015

In collaboration with Sugar Music, Music Box Records is pleased to present for the first time on CD the original motion picture soundtrack of Tais-toi quand tu parles (Zitto quando parli) composed and conducted by Armando Trovajoli.

Released in 1981, Tais-toi quand tu parles is often considered as the first film of director Philippe Clair’s second period, a period dominated by the presence, in top billing position, of Aldo Maccione, at the time at the peak of his career in France (thanks to directors like Claude Lelouch and Pierre Richard). Beyond this, Philippe Clair’s film was an enormous success at the box office in France. In addition to the presence of prestigious cinematographer Mario Vulpiani in the credits, Philippe Clair decided to work with the great composer Armando Trovajoli, faithful collaborator of Dino Risi (Scent of a Woman/Profumo di Donna, 1974) and, above all, of Ettore Scola (We All Loved Each Other So Much/C’eravamo tanto amati, 1974; Ugly, Dirty and Bad/Brutti, sporchi e cattivi, 1976). Famous for his 'Mediterranean humour', thus Philippe Clair very judiciously surrounded himself with a predominantly Italian team, particularly up to the task of giving shape to his craziest delirium, as cult director of La Grande Java (1970), Le Grand Fanfaron (1975) and Le Führer en folie (1973).

Tais-toi quand tu parles tells the story of Giacomo, a daydreaming anti-hero charged by the French secret service to conclude a Tunisian mission begun by James, a real secret agent assumed dead, and also Giacomo’s double. Like an Italian Orpheus, Giacomo passes through the looking glass in search of his Eurydice, brought to life here by the splendid Edwige Fenech, in the role of Béatrix.
Armando Trovajoli’s enchanting music expresses Giacomo’s aspirations for an idyllic life, as well as his impossible desire for Béatrix. Situated a million miles from reality and the everyday, the Italian composer’s score contributes to giving to Philippe Clair’s film its dreamlike rhythm, as well as reinforcing its subtle poetry.

Armando Trovajoli affirmed that Philippe Clair’s work was more musical than cinematographic. Like a jazz musician in an improvising trance of counter-melodies at once chaotic and absurd, Philippe Clair transgresses with abandon cinematic and comic codes, making of his films a rhythmic succession of delirious situations and dialogues, which no other genre of cinema resembles. This sacrilege of artwork – closer to a pop art approach, or to certain cartoons or examples of slapstick – is translated perfectly by Trovajoli, whose score banishes all forms of classicism and all grandiose conventions, in favour of an original, elegant and “pop” colouring.

Limited to 350 units, this this World Premiere CD release has been fully remastered from the session tapes by Claudio Fuiano and includes an 8-page booklet with liner notes by Nicolas Magenham, discussing the film and the score.

  17. The Varese Sarabande CD Club appears to be back on track with releases every few months:

Next Monday! October 12, 2015 ... new CD Club titles! A batch of three, just like the old days

A few days ago Alhambra Records released:
Alhambra Records is proud to present on this CD the world premiere release in stereo of Angelo Francesco Lavagnino's absolutely brilliant symphonic score for the 1960 feature-length documentary LA GRANDE OLIMPIADE (THE GRAND OLYMPICS) about the XVII Olympics in Rome which was directed by Romolo Marcellini and released in Italian cinemas in early January 1961. It even got nominated for an Oscar as “Best Documentary Feature” in 1962.

Some jazzy parts of the score had also been composed by Lavagnino’s colleague and friend Armando Trovajoli (for example a “Mambo” which is very reminiscent of his famous “Mambo Bacan”) and have been included as bonus tracks at the end of our CD.

This wonderful CD project – the sixth CD in our Lavagnino series - has only been possible thanks to the generous support of the three daughters of the composer - Bianca, Iudica and Alessandra Lavagnino -, who still had all the open reel tape copies in stereo of the original mastertapes in their personal archive.

We have opted to put together in a chronological sequencing all the symphonic tracks by Lavagnino for LA GRANDE OLIMPIADE which make musical sense and which amount to an impressive duration of about 65 minutes. In these tracks Lavagnino can be heard at the peak of his creativity in providing a variety of really sumptuous and lush themes and colourful orchestrations with a quite distinctive use of the wordless female choir. Listened to in its entirety, the score forms a fascinating large-scale symphonic poem. The Main Title introduces the sweeping long-lined main theme which is one of Lavagnino’s finest melodic inventions and shows the enthusiasm he had for this project. Typical of Lavagnino’s style, the wordless female choir – by the way, it is remarkable that no male choir at all has been used for LA GRANDE OLIMPIADE –, the harp glissandi and of course also the high strings play an essential part throughout this score and often give it a mellow tone as well as a sensual sheen. Often the choIr adds an almost mystical, poetic atmosphere to the sports events. One delightful theme after another crops up in this score: There is an impassioned and operatic theme for the torch relay montage, a spirited hunting music, nostalgic music for the sailing regatta, a lilting and totally ear-carching melody for a Sunday in Rome sequence whistled by Lavagnino himself, a noble trumpet hymn for the decathlon ceremony and much, much more. All in all, this will therefore be a musical festival for all the aficionados of the composer. An absolute delight from start to finish and one of the best scores Lavagnino had ever composed during his long career. Some older collectors who have the now quite rare Cinevox LP in mono of Lavagnino’s VATICANO II will probably recognize some tracks as about 25 minutes of the GRANDE OLIMPIADE score had been reused for this Italian documentary in 1963, but there is still more than half of the entire GRANDE OLIMPIADE score which has never been available on any sound carrier before and which can now be heard for the first rime ever on this CD.

We hope that many fans of the composer and of classic Italian film music may now enjoy for the first time ever on CD the splendid beauty of this exciting symphonic film score. Our CD edition comes with a 12-page booklet with extensive liner notes about the film and the music by Stefan Schlegel and a short commentary by German sports legend Armin Hary who won two gold medals at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

The CD will be officially released next week and is now available for pre-order at SAE:

And some clues about future titles:
We don't manage to release the next Lavagnino CD till December 2015. February/March 2016 is much more likely.

Alhambra will release two other German soundtrack projects on CD during the next three months so that there is just no room for this next Lavagnino CD, although we already have the chronological sequencing for this score's CD.

But I can tell you that one of these two German projects and with which I am also heavily involved with is also a superb Golden Age title from 1959. I am just writing the liner notes for this CD which contains one of the best large-scale symphonic scores written for German cinema during the 50s. The score was composed by a famous German film composer who has not been represented on disc at all till now because normally no original material of his scores is available anymore. Also this wonderful score which we will release in about 5-6 weeks on Alhambra was of course long thought to be lost forever, but we could indeed discover the still existing original tapes and could get them - in excellent condition! - from the German production company. For me this is really another dream come true.

And no, the score is not by Rolf Wilhelm and not by Hans-Martin Majewski, but by an even older German film composer.

    BASIC INSTINCT (2-CD SET)
Music Composed and Conducted by Jerry Goldsmith
    Limited edition of 2000 units

Crossing legs! Quartet Records and Studio Canal are proud to present the ultimate 2-CD set of Jerry Goldsmith’s Academy Award® nominated noir score for Paul Verhoeven’s classic erotic thriller Basic Instinct (1992), starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone.

For his second collaboration with director Paul Verhoeven (after Total Recall), Jerry Goldsmith composed one of his most famous and iconic scores—atmospheric and sensual, elegantly orchestrated, with a memorable main theme reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann.

At the time of the film’s premiere, Varèse Sarabande issued a fabulous 45-minutes CD produced by Goldsmith himself—a masterful presentation of the score’s highlights. Ten years later, Prometheus Records released an expanded version, with much of the music presented in film order, but still missing a pivotal moment and several alternate takes. Now, 23 years later, Quartet Records has finally done justice to this Goldsmith masterpiece. This new release includes all of the music recorded for the film, with correct edits, actual track titles, “An Unending Story” as heard in the film, and alternate takes recorded by Goldsmith for the shorter R-rated version of the film. Also included is the original album produced by the composer, featuring some slightly shorter cues and an alternate ending. All of the music was recorded in London with Goldsmith conducting The National Philharmonic Orchestra.

Both film score and album version have been entirely remixed and remastered from the original digital multi-track tapes by original scoring mixer Bruce Botnick for this edition—the score has, quite simply, never sounded better! Produced by Neil S. Bulk and Bruce Botnick, the album includes in-depth liner notes from film music writer Daniel Schweiger in a lavishly designed 24-page full-color booklet.

    KISS THE GIRLS (3-CD SET)
    Music Composed by Mark Isham
Unused Score Composed by Carter Burwell
    Limited edition of 1000 units

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures present a mammoth 3-CD set with the world premiere release of the complete original score composed by Mark Isham (A River Runs Through It, Cool World, Point Break, Blade)—plus the unused score composed by Carter Burwell (Miller’s Crossing, Rob Roy, Gods and Monsters, Twilight)—for the 1997 psychological thriller Kiss the Girls, directed by Gary Fleder, starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Cary Elwes, and based on the best-selling novel by James Patterson.

Mark Isham contributed a striking dramatic work, using a mix of electronics and conventional orchestra—one that underscores the pulsating nature of the story while incorporating a darkly romantic undercurrent. But Isham’s score for Kiss the Girls was not the only music written for the picture. Originally, acclaimed composer Carter Burwell had been signed to score the film, and his fully recorded, unused score makes its debut here.

The complete Mark Isham score appears on Discs One and Two of this release; we have also included the 30-minute suite selected by the composer for the original album released by Milan Records in 1997. The complete Carter Burwell score appears on Disc Three. Both scores are presented in stereo from pristine-condition digital scoring session mixes courtesy Paramount Pictures. The elegant, 24-page full-color booklet includes exclusive liner notes written by Andy Dursin.

Well it is a 2CD set with score and album plus a separate CD of the unused score.

  21. I have to say that Quartet Records are becoming quite a strong label for filmmusic these days, especially their releases of Eidelman and Silvestri these last couple of years

    Madness.
    I am extremely serious.
  22. The Varese Sarabande CD Club titles are:

"Back to the Future III" (deluxe)
    "Chain Reaction" (deluxe)
"Where the River Runs Black" (non deluxe re-issue)

  23. Thanks to an FSM member who posted this: today James Fritzpatrick (Tadlow) commented on their re-recording for "Sodom & Gomorrah":

Glad everyone seems to like it....so much so that I am virtually committed to record 2 of Rozsa's biggest scores in the next 2 to 3 years.....

  24. Clue for the next Intrada release:

2 of 4 gets a brand new update in this 2cd set featuring the original MCA program plus the complete score and alternates.

We already know "Jaws 2" is coming from them and the clue looks to fit that title.

  25. Another update from Tadlow:

Proposed new recording of complete Duel in the Sun postponed until Feb as supply of music scores rather slower than anticipated. And a lot of study required by Nic as tons of rubato.

So in its place next month is a Maurice Jarre score I have been obsessed with for 50 years... crazy to do it but what the hell it's only money and only a 98 piece orchestra....well some one has to do it! (just do not tell "she who must be obeyed"

    EDIT:
Thanks to Southall pointing out that on "The Face Book" James has confirmed "Is Paris Burning?" as the title. James chimed in on November 2 to further say:

Original album was 36 minutes....complete score is 86 minutes ...... will sequence in film order as the music really does tell a story....

    "The Face Book" post:
Call me stupid, call me irresponsible...but just decided today to record one of my favourite film scores by my favourite film composer. Maurice Jarre, who I was fortunate to call a friend. My colleague Nic Raine not only orchestrated for Maurice but was also a friend. So how appropriate to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film IS PARIS BURNING? We should be recording this gigantic score in 6 weeks time....all I need to do is find a 90 orchestra plus 6 snare drums and 12 (yes twelve) pianos : 4 grands, 4 baby grands, 4 uprights....no problem in Prague...just need now to find enough piano tuners !!!
But somebody has to do it!
