Probably THE most sought after score from Scandinavia, is from the Norwegian stop-motion film Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (Flåklypa Grand Prix in Norwegian) from 1975.

The film was voted the second best film of 1975, and has been seen by more than 5 million people in Norway alone.

The score is extremely thematic, and has several melodies that people from Scandinavia have loved ever since it´s release. The main theme is so popular in Norway, that many believe it to be a traditional folk-song, when in fact, it was composed for the film by Danish composer Bent Fabricius-Bjerre.

Incredibly, then music has never been release, until now, and will now be available on a limited edition 40th anniversary CD.

Click on this link to read more about it, and listen to a preview of the music.

Yup, I've known about this release for a while through Jesper from Plantsounds, but I promised him not to say anything. They wanted to announce it closer to Christmas, which they now have.

Anyways, Norway's most popular film created by our equivalent of Walt Disney, Norway's most popular film theme (and one of my alltime favourites) and in general a great, "Dixieland"-inspired score with oodles of Delerue-ian melancholy from the guy who gave us "Alley Cat" and who is currently one of the oldest working film composers in the world, having released the animated film ALBERT this year at age 90!

    Yes, I'm definitely getting this.
    I am extremely serious.

I've just been sent a digital promo (and a physical version is on its way). It's spectacular stuff -- a milestone in Nordic film music history! Even if you don't have the strong connection to the film like all Norwegians do, it's still wonderful music on its own. Especially the gorgeous "Reodor's Ballad", which is probably my favourite film theme of all time, alongside JURASSIC PARK.
    I am extremely serious.

  3. New releases from Music Box Records:

    RABID DOGS (2015)
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
    Music Composed by Laurent Eyquem

World Premiere CD Release. 49 minutes of music.
CD booklet including Laurent Eyquem's statements.
    Limited Collector’s Edition.

    Ref: MBR-078
    Release Date: December 1, 2015

Music Box Records presents the premiere CD release of the score for 2015 Rabid Dogs composed by Laurent Eyquem (Copperhead, Winnie Mandela, Tokarev, Momentum).

Based on Mario Bava's original 1974 classic thriller, Rabid Dogs comes from first-timer director Éric Hannezo starring Lambert Wilson, Guillaume Gouix, Virginie Ledoyen and Laurent Lucas. Rabid Dogs received critical acclaim as a minimalist noir masterpiece, favoured for its cinematography and inspired narrative.

A bank job goes wrong. Four armed robbers take refuge in a shopping centre - shots are fired, panic ensues. Surrounded, the criminals shoot a man and take a woman hostage. Cornered, they hijack a car. At the wheel - a father on his way to hospital with his sick child. Out of control, on the run, their escape turns into a merciless manhunt. For these rabid dogs, there is no turning back.

‘’The foundation of the score is electronic from start to finish, both in terms of the overall sound and the melodies. The electronic roots are omnipresent, maintaining a decidedly intense atmosphere’’ explains the composer. ‘’Strings are used sparingly and bring a kind of tenderness to the chaos’’. In his score, Laurent Eyquem also uses very brief quotations of the original musical theme from the Bava film composed by Stelvio Cipriani to connect films together.

This soundtrack is the one that accompanied the full-length version of the film as it was presented at Cannes Film Festival in May 2015. It includes original cues that didn't make it to the final version of Rabid Dogs shown in theaters.

    LOLITA (1997)
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed, Orchestrated and Conducted by Ennio Morricone

    Limited Collector's Edition.
Remastered reissue with new CD artwork. 75 minutes long program.
Edition supervised by Claudio Fuiano and Daniel Winkler.
8-page CD booklet with liner notes by Gergely Hubai.

    Ref: MBR-038R
    Release Date: December 1, 2015

Music Box Records is pleased to reissue the expanded CD of Lolita (1997), Ennio Morricone’s classic score for Adrian Lyne’s controversial adaptation of the Vladmir Nabokov novel. Starring Jeremy Irons, Melanie Griffith, Frank Langella and Dominique Swain, this version had to contend with the shadow of the earlier adaptation made by Stanley Kubrick.
In 2013, Music Box Records released this expanded edition which was quickly sold out in less than two months.

Nabokov’s novel tells the tale of Humbert Humbert, a university professor who falls in love with the daughter of his landlady. His love for the teen-aged nymphette Lolita knows no boundaries so he marries his shrewish mother in order to be close to the girl. Before his new wife could oust him as a pervert, Humbert gets widowed and must take of Lolita – a sweet burden he happily carries across the country. Their cross-country adventure is followed by the mysterious Clare Quilty who has his own plans for Lolita...

For Lolita, Ennio Morricone contributed one of his most memorable and melodramatic scores that work wonderfully alongside Lyne’s slow-motion images filled with erotic tension. As the composer himself described the project: "With my music, I only had to follow on a high level the director's intentions to make Lolita a story of sincere and reciprocal love, even within the limits of the purity and malicious naiveté of its young subject."

Mastered by Claudio Fuiano and Daniel Winkler, this new reissue by Music Box Records with a brand new artwork expands upon the original Milan Records soundtracks by omitting the period songs and adding more music by the Maestro. Highlights include different variations of the main theme and the "Requiescant" theme which features the guest performance of the Coro di Voci Bianche dell'Arcum children's choir.

    REINDEER GAMES (2000)
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Alan Silvestri

World Premiere CD release. Limited Collector’s Edition.
65 minutes of music never-before released.
8-page CD booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger.

    Ref: MBR-079
    Release Date: December 1, 2015

Music Box Records is pleased to present the world premiere release of acclaimed composer Alan Silvestri's (Back to the Future Trilogy, Predator, The Walk) original score to the 2000 action thriller Reindeer Games, starring Ben Affleck, Gary Sinise, Charlize Theron and James Frain, and directed by John Frankenheimer (Seven Days in May, French Connection II, The Fourth War).

Written by Ehren Kruger (Arlington Road, Scream 3, The Brothers Grimm), the film tells the story of Rudy Duncan (Ben Affleck) and his cellmate Nick Cassidy (James Frain) who are both about to be freed from jail when Nick is murdered during a prison brawl. Rudy assume's his late cellmate's identity when his pen-pal-like girlfriend Ashley Mercer (Charlize Theron) comes to find him. But Ashley's brother Gabriel (Gary Sinise) and his crew of deadly criminals think Rudy has some inside information to rob a casino where the real Nick once had a job.

The icily humorous score is packed with rhythmic orchestral suspense and electronic minimalism. Alan Silvestri composes the thrilling tension and chase cues with his signature propulsive action music, while also offering soaring, lush melody as "Nick" quickly discovers that Ashley certainly isn't the sweetheart he imagined her to be.

The soundtrack debut of Reindeer Games is presented in stereo from pristine-condition from digital scoring session mixes, featuring exclusive liner notes by writer Daniel Schweiger and new comments by Alan Silvestri on his collaboration with director John Frankenheimer.

  6. Clues for the next Kritzerland release, which has been revealed to once again be Victor Young scores:

Probably shouldn't do clues just yet, other than to say it's two scores on one CD, both of which have been out on CD before - one has been OOP for a very long time, one has been OOP for a few years now - but this pairing is new and since the score that's been OOP for a very long time sold out literally in a day, I think this will do very, very well.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  7. My mistake -- the wording was a little confusing. The next Kritzerland is a two-fer, but it's not Young but rather Delerue:

We've remastered both scores - and, IMO, Rapture is a bit improved by it, while the Pick-up Artist sounded great and we didn't do much to it.

    On TP-UA:
And the score is stunning and classic Delerue. And it sold out in one day. Literally. Oops.

Intrada was the label for that sold out release.

  9. In a thread about a Herrmanm score, "Marnie" came up and the sound quality of the re-recording. Kritzerland chimed in. I'm not sure if it's a hint or not:

I can assure you, the original recording sounds amazing - beautiful stereo, and a performance and recording that puts the rerecording to complete and utter shame.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  10. Okay, an update on "Marnie" and "Twisted Nerve" (TN was the original topic):

Again, these are coming from others, not us. Sometimes it just takes a long time - which is what I'm finding out the hard way with these sixteen or so titles I'm trying to clear. I think even a year ago that process would have gone much faster, but now it's just endless - going on six months now.

I've had Marnie for ages - I wanted it for us, but it was already taken, or so I was told.

I'd guess that's either Intrada or Music Box.

  11. Silva Screen Records will release a CD of score to the upcoming TV movie "Peter and Wendy" (yes, another Peter Pan film).

The score is by somebody named Maurizio Malagnini. I only mention it, as I tend not to report standard CD releases, 'cause back when I first saw the score had been recorded months ago, the blurb mentioned "sumptious string writing". There are samples at the Amazon.co.uk page, but they won't play for me. Feel free to sample yourself:

It does sound like it could be something to look forward to. It certainly opens all grand and orchestral.

Malagnini's music for the TV show The Paradise is something that I didn't like, and I much preferred his music for the animated series Muddle Earth.
