How some sales of titles are going over at LLLR's, in response to an FSM user always going on about Beltrami and this time being a negative nancy about a recent LLLR's release:

    FYI

Home Alone has sold nearly 2000 units in one week, whereas 3:10 to Yuma and Hitman Agent 47 combined has only sold 900 units since they came out.

  5. New releases from Music Box and one new release from Kritzerland:

    THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO
Music Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann

Limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

In 1952, Twentieth Century Fox memorably brought Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro to the screen in a lavish production directed by Henry King, with a screenplay by Casey Robinson, starring a stellar cast including Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Susan Hayward, along with Hildegard Knef, Leo G. Carroll, and Torin Thatcher. The beautiful cinematography was by Oscar-winner Leon Shamroy.

With stunning location photography in Nairobi, Kenya, Cairo, Egypt and the French Riviera, the film was a Technicolor dazzler. The film was one of Fox’s biggest hits, earning huge grosses. It was nominated for two Academy Awards – one for Best Cinematography, Color and one for Best Art Direction, Color.

There could not have been a better choice for composer than Bernard Herrmann, who gave the film his completely unique sound and sense of drama. Herrmann had already written many scores for Fox films, including Jane Eyre, Hangover Square, Anna and the King of Siam, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and 5 Fingers, and subsequent to The Snows of Kilimanjaro he would continue to compose brilliant scores for the studio, including White Witch Doctor, Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, King of the Khyber Rifles, Garden of Evil, The Egyptian (with Alfred Newman), Prince of Players, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, A Hatful of Rain, Blue Denim, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Tender Is the Night.

In his score for The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Herrmann captures all moods of the story, from nostalgia to sadness to joy to romance. The music is achingly beautiful, most especially in the sublime “The Memory Waltz.” As always with Herrmann, his orchestral colors are uniquely his own (as are his orchestrations), and even though with most Herrmann scores you can easily say it’s one of his best, The Snows of Kilimanjaro is right up there with his greatest.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro was previously released as part of the Bernard Herrmann at Fox box on Varese Sarabande. This is the scores’ first standalone release.

CDs will ship by the third week of February, but we’ve been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

NOTE TO OUR INDIEGOGO SUPPORTERS: IF YOU DO NOT WANT THIS TITLE YOU MUST OPT OUT OF THE RELEASE BY SENDING US AN E-MAIL TO KRITZERLAND@GMAIL.COM. IF YOU DO NOT OPT OUT, YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE THIS CD, DEPENDING ON YOUR PERK LEVEL.

    EDIT:
Somebody asked about the sound qaulity on this and Kimmel replied:
Close enough that if you have the Varese you're probably fine.

COMMISSAIRE MOULIN ET AUTRES SCÈNES DE CRIMES
    Original Soundtrack
Music Composed by François de Roubaix

    Limited Collector's Edition.
New remastered expanded edition. First time on CD.
More than 40 minutes of music, including 6 unreleased tracks.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Gilles Loison.

    Ref: MBR-083
    Release Date: January 18, 2016

Commissaire Moulin is the 1976 French television series created by Paul Andréota and Claude Boissol and starring Yves Rénier as the titular character, Police Commissioner Jean-Paul Moulin. Before going to the Canary Isles, François de Roubaix composed an upbeat theme on his eight-track recorder and dropped off at the home of Claude Boissol the musical soundtrack for the series, which included two versions of the main theme as well as two interludes of around twenty seconds. A few days later, François de Roubaix died in a diving accident on November 21, 1975.

This compilation, Commissaire Moulin et autres scènes de crimes, came from the idea of Fred Mergam, the WéMè Records label owner and Benjamin de Roubaix, the composer’s son. Between electronic tricks and acoustic works, this compact disc brings the themes of this television series together with other music composed for never released or still unknown projects. If the majority of the music on this disc does not originate from police stories, it nevertheless fits in with suspenseful atmospheres and other crime scenes.

Transferred from the original master tapes, this expanded edition of the LP record produced by WéMè includes six unreleased tracks, carefully selected by Music Box Records, in an effort to extend the mystery of this imaginary soundtrack. This new real gem dedicated to François de Roubaix once more demonstrates that his unique talent for melodies never failed.

PRÉPAREZ VOS MOUCHOIRS (GET OUT YOUR HANDKERCHIEFS) (1978)
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Georges Delerue

World Premiere CD release. Limited Collector's Edition.
More than 35 minutes of music, including one unreleased track.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Nicolas Magenham.

    Ref: MBR-081
    Release Date: January 18, 2016

In collaboration with EMI Music Publishing, Music Box Records presents on CD the slightly expanded score from the original motion picture Bertrand Blier’s Préparez vos mouchoirs (Get Out Your Handkerchiefs) composed by Georges Delerue in 1978. The film received rave reviews and won the César Award for Best Original Music, as well as the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Préparez vos mouchoirs constitutes the third and last collaboration between Bertrand Blier and Georges Delerue, after the documentary Hitler, connais pas in 1963 and the cult success Calmos in 1976.

The film tells the story of Raoul and Solange (Gérard Depardieu and Carole Laure), two lost souls in a suffocating world dominated by the conformism of a dead-end relationship. Raoul is driven to despair by his wife Solange’s lethargy, which is why he asks a stranger he meets in a bar (Stéphane, played by Patrick Dewaere) to “pay her some attention”, so she can finally recapture a taste for life. The two men’s scheming ends up turning into an obsession, matched only by their passion for the music of Mozart.

Through his brilliant Mozart pastiches at the request of director Bertrand Blier, the composer of Contempt and Day for Night gives us a contemporary vision on the work of the Austrian composer (the use of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K.467 - Andante conducted by Delerue himself). Georges Delerue’s delightful score is catchy and plays charmingly with the narrative arc.

This present edition, fully remastered from the recording sessions master tapes, features one previously unreleased track (the alternate version of the lively track La poursuite). The package includes 8-page liner notes by Nicolas Magenham discussing the film and the score.

    TRACK LISTING:

    1. Solange et Christian (7:07)

VENDREDI OU LA VIE SAUVAGE (ROBINSON AND MAN FRIDAY) (1981)
    Original Television Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Maurice Jarre

    2-CD set. Limited 35th Anniversary Collector's Edition.
    New remastered expanded edition.
2 hours of music, including 1 hour of music never released before.
8-page CD booklet with English liner notes by Gergely Hubai.

    Ref: MBR-082
    Release Date: January 18, 2016

Music Box Records re-issues one of its bestselling, now out-of-print CDs: Maurice Jarre's Vendredi ou la Vie sauvage (Robinson and Man Friday) is given a new 2-CD edition with 50 minutes of previously unreleased music and new liner notes discussing the film and the score for the 35th anniversary of the series.

Vendredi ou les Limbes du Pacifique is the first published novel by Michel Tournier which won the « Grand Prix du roman » of the Académie Française in 1967. The author published a simpler and briefer version of the story in 1971 called Vendredi ou la Vie sauvage.

Adapted for television in three episodes by Gérard Vergez in 1981, such a project required the significant financial, technological and logistical ressources. It was thus decided to film in French and English simultaneously, with the celebrated English actor Michael York, and a young American dancer, Gene Anthony Ray, who had recently made a name for himself appearing in Alan Parker’s Fame.

A result of the international character of the project, the process of choosing a composer for the music led to the doorstep of Maurice Jarre who had gained renown for his composition of the scores for David Lean’s two films Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Doctor Zhivago (1965), which had become worldwide successes.

It was a period when Maurice Jarre worked on some television projects such as the famous TV mini-series Shogun starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshirô Mifune and just before being involved with the mega-production Lion of the Desert, produced and directed by Mustapha Akkad. The score of Vendredi ou la Vie sauvage offers a very rich symphonic score by turns melodic, flavorful and exciting. The numerous themes perfectly evoke all the wide-ranging emotions, from the savagery of island life (muted percussive motif played on bass kettle-drums...) to the beauty and solemnity of friendship between Robinson and Friday (use of Ondes Martenot and solist instruments such as harp, oboe...).

Music Box Records presents the complete edition of Maurice Jarre's masterful score. Our first edition (which is now out-of-print) added 20 minutes of never before released material to the LP program, but this two CD edition features another 50 minutes of brand new material, including different versions of the theme song performed by Alexandra Brown. The package includes 8-page liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film, the score and the discographical background of Jarre's magnificent television score.

  7. Posted by Stefan Schlegel today at FSM:

It has taken a longer time than I had originally thought, but the new Saimel CD with the complete score of Piero Piccioni's LA VIACCIA has now finally been slated for an end of January release on the Spanish Rosebud website:
    http://www.rosebudbandasonora.com/catal … s_id=21189

Unreleased till now, this remarkable score from 1961 has always been the missing link between IL BELL'ANTONIO (1960) and SENILITÀ (1962) which together form kind of a Mauro Bolognini/Claudia Cardinale/Piero Piccioni triptych.

The first part of the CD contains all tracks which have been specifically composed by Piccioni for this film whereas during the second half of the CD you will find some alternate and unused tracks as well as the complete Debussy piece "Rhapsody for Saxophone and Orchestra" (conducted here by Franco Ferrara) of which short snippets were used throughout the film.

For some tracks in the main program (track 1-19 on the CD) Piccioni also made some kind of adaptation of parts of the Debussy work with slightly different instrumentation, several added bars or a completely different editing. These tracks in the main program are therefore always marked with an asterisk.
I have written the complete liner notes for this new CD which you can read here:

  16. An update today from PlantSounds (who did their first release last year, "Pinchcliffe Grand Prix"):

    hi all

Later this year, we will be re-releasing Ron Goodwins score for the animated Danish feature "Valhalla".
This was Goodwin's final score, and it's really really good!

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the film, and I would love your (the film music experts) opinion on something.

We will, of course, release all of the score for the film BUT we are in posession of Goodwin's synth demo along with early material from the film two original composers (Danes Bent Hesselman and Jussi Adler-Olsen).

Would you prefer a release like this to be "just" the score, or would you like an extra disc of demo material as well?

We apreciate all of your input

    Thanks,

    Jesper

Yeah, Jesper told me that in a mail awhile back. I'm also excited -- I have very fond memories of seeing VALHALLA in the theatre as a kid. One of my early cinemagoing experiences. Can't remember a note of the music, though, but it's Goodwin!
    I am extremely serious.

Jussi Adler-Olsen wrote a film score? I was familiar with his books. I think I've read three of them. Had no idea he was also a composer.

Music Box Records is pleased to present on CD the collaboration between composer Raymond Alessandrini and director/screenwriter Jean-Charles Tacchella: Travelling avant (1987) starring Thierry Frémont, Ann-Gisel Glass and Simon de La Brosse and Escalier C (Staircase C) (1985) starring Robin Renucci, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Jacques Bonnaffé, Catherine Leprince and Catherine Frot.

Escalier C tells the story of Forster, an obnoxious art critic who learns to love through his involvement with the occupants of his apartment residential block. The main theme of the movie is based on the creaking sound of a piano, echoing the main character’s cynicism. The composer also writes for the film mysterious and lyrical pieces until an optimistic musical dénouement.

Travelling avant is a semi-autobiographical hymn to Tacchella's youth as a cinema fanatic and ciné-club enthusiast in Paris after World War II. This movie, a tribute to cinema in the 30’s and 40’s, allowed Raymond Alessandrini to write a nostalgic score where one can sometimes detect the influence of his two mentors, Maurice Jaubert and Georges Delerue.

The album has been transferred and remastered from the original master tapes. Music Box Records presents the slightly expanded Travelling avant score with two extra musical tracks specially recorded for this album and the previously unreleased Escalier C score. The limited edition features exclusive liner notes by writer Sylvain Pfeffer and new comments by Raymond Alessandrini on his collaboration with director Jean-Charles Tacchella.

    ESPION, LÈVE-TOI
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed, Orchestrated and Conducted by Ennio Morricone

New remastered expanded edition supervised by Claudio Fuiano & Daniel Winkler.
45 minutes of music, including 3 unreleased tracks.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Patrick Bouster.
    Limited Collector's Edition.

    Ref: MBR-084
    Release Date: in stock

Shortly after Le Professionnel (Georges Lautner, 1981), Ennio Morricone composes the score for another French film, Espion, lève-toi (1982), directed by Yves Boisset, with whom he already worked on L'Attentat (The French Conspiracy, 1972). Even if both films have common points, apart from the dialogue written by Michel Audiard (secret services, main character menaced and then crushed by the system, tragic end), it is not the case about the soundtrack.

Through three main themes, the composer creates a tense atmosphere but always accessible. The powerful track Marche en la, through many versions, sustains the movie in moments of action and menace. Sweet and sentimental, the theme in Mélodie pour Anna and Bugle pour Anna accompanies the woman, but also the fragility, the human and conjugal sides of the main character played by Lino Ventura, into two very different variations. The third theme, with a slow tempo and low tones, carries the mystery, the meanders of the Secret Services and its underlying menace.

As often in Morricone's music, the tones are important and each instrument brings a peculiar color although perceivable over the orchestra, although in a coherent whole. Here the special atmosphere is played by the Oscar Valdambrini's flugelhorn (present in the three themes), the pianoforte, the bassoon, the percussion and the flutes.

The original LP issued in 1982 contained ten tracks including the song Canción del Fuego not composed by Morricone and the track (Ombres suspendues) coming from the film Le Secret (Robert Enrico, 1974), which is not included in this present edition. In 2000, the Screen Trax CD release contained sixteen tracks, but without featuring the song. Thanks to a new stereo master tape found in Italy, this new Music Box Records release, supervised and mastered by Claudio Fuiano and Daniel Winkler, presents the most complete version of Espion, lève-toi, including the song and three never-before-released tracks. A nice occasion to rediscover the score with improved sound.
