I just learned that Joe Kraemer scores the new Sam Elliot movie “The Man who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot” and the review I read described it as “traditionally orchestral”, so I’m pretty excited :-)
Bach's music is heartless and robotic.
  1. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to read what LLLR is and is not doing on the Mission: Impossible film scores:

BTW, in case anyone was wondering

LLLCD 1411 - Mission Impossible 20th Anniversary 2 cd set (yes, it was supposed to be released in 2016, but we are still waiting on a rewrite/interview for the notes). Maybe next year? frown

MI2 - may happen some day. a bit more complicated. We have it all, just waiting on a legal thumbs up

    MI3 - with Varese
MI Ghost Protocol - see above

MI Rogue Nation - out now, may do an expanded version for the 10 year anniversary...if we are still in business. lol

  3. Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but Music Box Records is releasing Georges Delerue's TOURS DU MONDE, TOURS DU CIEL. I've ordered mine. I've waited for what feels like forever to get a commercial release of this score. "Stellaire 1" is one of my all-time favorite Delerue compositions. It's just relentlessly achingly beautiful, and even though it's gorgeous throughout, he still manages to build to a climax that's even more gorgeous than everything that's come before it. The other "Stellaire" tracks are lovely as well. The 30 second cues I probably won't listen to often. It's a short score, but has some exquisite music.

The album also includes a 2010 recording of Delerue's first string quartet (1948), which couldn't be more different from TOURS DU MONDE, based on the samples. I probably won't listen to that very often. But I'm thrilled to have this album.
  4. Quarter Records is up to something. As pointed out by another person: posted yesterday on QR's Facebook page:

We are starting today the most ambitious and exciting project in the history of Quartet Records. Can’t wait!

  5. An update from Note for Note projects yesterday (posted on the FSM forum):

    Greetings all:

Last 75 copies of Thelma And Louise - we are pricing it at $6.99 so if you have been waiting to buy this, we are pricing it to sell and hopefully see a sell out.

For a limited time, The Thing LP (the Alan Howarth/Larry Hopkins re-recording) is on sale for $9.99. This is a 2 week offer. I know vinyl is a hit and miss proposal here but I am letting fans of the format know about the sale.

Holocaust is pretty much done and awaiting final approvals. When Sony Music approves it and we get a timeline for when the product will arrive, we will be offering it for pre-order at a special price of $13.99. For us, it's a chance to get out a score we love to our customers for a super low price. If this is successful we may do this with all of our label licensed products coming in the future (Frank Comstock, Cousins, etc). For those who ask what sources we used, I can assure you it was the tape that RCA used to make the vinyl LPs back in the day. The source was pristine and allowed us to give you a quality sounding CD (mastered by James Nelson). I am a huge believer in trying to give the customer value wherever possible. This one is perfect as it checks all the boxes of a great orchestral score that hasn't seen the light of day on CD.

In December we are releasing a very limited 300 unit run of Wuthering Heights on vinyl LP (this will be offered through normal retail channels and our website) and a CD release of Trevor Morris' score to Goon: The Last Of The Enforcers (again, retail and our website).

If all goes well we may have a 2-CD release of Masters Of The Universe released at 500 copies in December. It will be the full expanded score on one disc and the original Varese LP on a second disc. Best yet...we are offering it for $17.98. There will then be a 500 copy LP release (full score - 2 LPs) for those inclined to want a vinyl presentation. Master source is the same one James did for La-La Land.

I have to admit, I wasn't even aware of the film.

Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  7. Being worked on by Intrada Records:

I user at the Intrada forum posted:
This underrated composer was one of the best. His music to 'Camille' was edited by Prometheus (but only 22 minutes) but it's superb music, delicate and mesmerizing. Allyn Ferguson won the Emmy for this music.

Another gem is 'Master of the Game', Emmy nominated score, powerful and rich score, varied and tuneful. Similar, in some ways, to Bill Conti's Dinasty

To which Roger replied on November 26, 2018:
Funny you should mention this as we've been working on it, but having trouble locating all the music elements (strangely material that appeared on the BBC LP!)

  8. General hints/comments from MV over at the FSM thread "La La Land/MV Questions thread", since early October until today:

    Hi La La Land folks,

any news about Levays "Airwolf"- and Post's & Carpenter's "Rockford"-, "Magnum"- and "A-Team"-scores?

    I hope some day

    MV

    MV:
Any chance of some Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Paul J Smith or Victor Young coming down the pipeline?

    yes

When asked if any Goldsmith titles or a re-issue of "Innerspace" is due soon, he replied:
    Yes

    smile

Truth be told, the Universal Heritage Collection was supposed to kick off with Sugarland Express, but after careful consideration the project was dropped at the request of the composer. Bummer too, because it was pretty darn awesome!

    Perhaps one day...

In regards to "Support Your Local Sheriff":
I asked about that and was waiting for an answer

    MV:
MV, any possibility of Horner’s complete/expanded score of ‘Field of Dreams’?

    You never know

    MV:
If Universal could right a wrong and grant you permission to expand 'SNEAKERS' after they denied you that years ago, that would also be great.

Oh, its gonna be righted and lefted!

    MV:
Any chance of a release of Ted Nichols' music to "Scooby Doo, Where Are You?" (1969/1970)?

Yes, one of my holiest grails!

    On disappointing "E.T." sales:
Yes next year but to be honest with you ET has tanked and we spent about 60k on it (and if you are good with math you can see why I'm disappointed in sales). Not very happy with the sales thus far. Guess if I slapped a Mondo sticker on it or did a purple vinyl pressing it would have sold, but black is the best way to listen to vinyl. So many of these vinyl collector's are huge phonies anyway.

The scores to "The Streets of San Francisco" will be out "in less than 6 months".

The label will not be doing the Ron Jones scores to the 1988 "Superman" animated series, which were on the FSM box set.

  9. The releases for the month of December from Quartet Records:

THE BRIDE WORE BLACK [DIGITAL NEW RECORDING OF THE COMPLETE SCORE ]

    Bernard Herrmann

    http://www.quartetrecords.com/the-bride-wore-black.html

Quartet Records is proud to present a new digital recording: the premiere release of Bernard Herrmann’s score for François Truffaut The Bride Wore Black (La mariée était en noir), coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the film.

Bernard Herrmann’s The Bride Wore Black, the second of his two collaborations with Franc¸ois Truffaut (Fahrenheit 451 was the first), has been eagerly sought after by collectors and film music fans around the world for many years. Despite the efforts of several specialized labels, including us, the search for the complete original elements has been unsuccessful. The orchestral sessions conducted by Andre´ Girard and Herrmann himself in Paris in 1968 are either destroyed or lost. So how can we recover this music, a prime score from Herrmann’s last years? The only solution was to record it again and bring this music back to life in state-of-the-art digital sound.

After two albums with Fernando Vela´zquez and the Basque National Orchestra (“Concert Suites” and the complete recording of The Orphanage), this seemed like a perfect project for them. The young composer/conductor and the orchestra enthusiastically and unhesitatingly embraced the idea. With access to Herrmann’s original, fully orchestrated score, painstakingly reconstructed by Rubén Villar, we were able to restore the score respecting every note the composer had written. We were thrilled to discover a lot of music not used in the final edit of the film: from the 35 minutes of score heard in the film, we have now more than 50!

Passionately conducted by Maestro Velázquez, this new complete recording of The Bride Wore Black reveals unexpected aspects of Herrmann’s second collaboration with Truffaut. The original narrative construction of the score, as intended by Herrmann, is unusually rich in themes and sync points. Its form hews closer to more traditional “Hollywood style” structures than most of the thrillers he had previously scored. The emotional and subliminal information are clearly and sharply contrasted. It also marks a transition in the composer’s career: from such a lightly colored Hitchcock score as The Trouble With Harry (obvious in M. Coral’s jolly theme) to the forthcoming dark and passionately romantic approach to his penultimate masterwork (one might say his own premonitory requiem...), Obsession. Beyond their presumed Hitchcock homages, the films of Franc¸ois Truffaut and Brian De Palma have a lot in common: churches, reception waltzes, portraits, close-ups on guns, airport scenes and powerful lengthy tour-de-force sequences enhanced by Herrmann’s unleashed orchestral genius ... and, not to forget, organ!

Recorded on the OSE orchestra stage in September 2018 by Marc Blanes (who also mixed and mastered), the album was produced by Jose M. Benitez and Edouard Dubois, with executive production entirely by Quartet Records. The booklet includes extensive liner notes by Frank K. DeWald, who discusses both film and score as well as providing a track-by-track analysis. After several years on our wish list, this dream project has finally come true.

THE BIG COUNTRY (2-CD) (60 TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
    Jerome Moross
Limited Collector’s Edition of 1000 units

    http://www.quartetrecords.com/the-big-country-2-cd.html

Quartet Records and MGM present a 60th anniversary remastered 2-CD edition of one of the most famous western scores ever composed.

Directed by William Wyler and starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carrol Baker, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives, this epic western was based on the serialized magazine novel Ambush at Blanco Canyon by Donald Hamilton. The Academy-Award nominated score composed and conducted by Jerome Moross (The Valley of Gwangi, The War Lord, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Proud Rebel) is undoubtedly one of the most popular soundtracks ever released. It changed the landscape of western movie scores, veering the approach away from spare folk songs to a lavish, American-flavored orchestral sound—suggestive of the open-air music of Moross’ friend Aaron Copland.

A 30-minute selection with 12 tracks from The Big Country was released on LP in 1958 by United Artist Records in two versions: stereo and mono, although the “stereo” was electronically processed from mono tapes. This album was reissued many times on LP due the popularity of the score. In 1988, Silva Screen recorded an expanded selection in terrific stereo with Tony Bremner conducting The Philharmonia Orchestra. The 76-minute original score finally appeared in 1991 on a limited release from Screen Archives Entertainment that included the whole score (with some tracks not included in the final cut of the film) sourced from the composer’s personal tapes. La-La Land Records released the same selection in 2007, although that edition sold out and is selling for exorbitant prices on the secondary market.

The 60th anniversary of this masterpiece bring us the opportunity to revisit the score, fully restored and remastered by Chris Malone (in true mono sound, without any fake stereo image), fixing some imperfections inherent on all previous releases and making it sounds better than ever! On the second CD we have included both versions of the historic LP, the processed stereo and the mono, transferred from master tapes vaulted at MGM.

The package comes with a flipper-style, 24-page, full-color booklet including the two covers of the original album and detailed liner notes by Jeff Bond.

    WarGames
    Arthur B. Rubinstein
Limited Collector’s Edition of 1000 units.

Quartet Records and MGM present the 35th-anniversary remastered, 2-CD expanded edition of the score by Arthur B. Rubinstein (Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Blue Thunder, Nick of Time) for the classic ’80s thriller WarGames.

Directed by John Badham in 1983 and starring Matthew Broderick, Ally Shedy, Dabney Colleman and John Wood, this mega-hit film is about a young man who finds a back door into a military central computer in which reality is confused with game-playing, possibly starting World War III.

Arthur B. Rubinstein, Badham’s usual composer, provides a dynamic action score with incredible sweep and colorful excitement. With no single main theme, his score for WarGames is a veritable feast of themes and motifs, many of them cleverly interrelated.

Unfairly, Arthur B. Rubinstein was not a popular composer in 1983, but the film’s incredible success inspired Polydor to release an LP of WarGames that, typically for soundtracks of the era, featured a selection of score highlights and songs intercut with dialogue excerpts and sound effects from the film—far from being the full score. In 2008, Intrada Records released a magnificent CD produced under the supervision of Maestro Rubinstein himself, newly remixed from the 2 24-track session masters. This high-quality CD was quickly sold out and fetched high prices on the second-hand market, but the sound was a bit different from what was heard in the film, possibly due to the composer’s personal choices when revisiting the score 25 years later. With the 35th anniversary of the film, we decided not to offer a straight reissue of the Intrada CD, but to return to the original mixes of the film, made at the legendary MGM Scoring Stage in Culver City.

The first CD is sequenced in film order and sounds as it is heard in the film. On the second disc we have included, for the first time, the reissue of the original Polydor LP, whose mixes were also a bit different from what was prepared for the film. We have also included in the bonus section some alternates and cues not used in the film, offering the most complete edition that will be a delight for fans of this film and score. Produced, restored, remixed and mastered by Chris Malone in painstaking detail from ½? three-tracks, ½? stereo-tracks and album masters (we even pulled the stereo music stem for a 15-second cue missing from the session tapes), all vaulted in pristine condition at MGM. John Takis provides detailed liner notes in a 20-page full-color booklet.

This album is dedicated to the memory of Arthur B. Rubinstein, who passed away in April 2018.

  10. According to an FSM poster, the liner notes for Quarter's new re-recording of "The Bride Wore Black", states that in 2019 they'll also be releasing his score (not specified by the poster if the original or a re-recording) to "Endless Night".

Referring (it looks like) to Elfman re-recording of "Psycho", Roger posted on December 12, 2018 at the FSM board:
    Roger Feigelson:
I was talking to Universal about expanding this with UMG just a few weeks ago. So keep your fingers crossed.

  11. An update on the possibility of a deluxe "Willow" from Intrada.

Posted back in May by "Soundtrack Doctor" on the Intrada forum (he works on releases for them):

This one is definitely being reviewed, but a little tricky.

  12. La La Land Records titles for January:

2019 is starting off with some amazing projects -- a cd release of Nathan Barr's great score to A HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS (EXPANDED), A 2 cd set of the ORVILLE, Michel Legrand's THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND and of course, our previously announced 3 disc set of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE, expanded and completely remastered. You WILL believe a Soundtrack can improve!

  13. Posted by [b]Quartet Records[/b ]a few days ago:

We have been notified by some customers that CD 1 of "The Big Country" has some skips. The two copies I heard before shipping were in perfect condition. However, we have now opened and listened to another 25 copies from different boxes, and 5 of them were defective. It’s essentially a lottery since not all the pressings are bad.

We have repressed CD 1 and sent replacement copies to all customers who have purchased directly from our website. It is not necessary to contact us, since in the next few days you will automatically receive a replacement CD at your shipping address.

We are also sending enough quantities to all retailers so that, in case your copy has a defect, you can request a replacement that they can send in the next order you make to them.

Apologies for this incident. As I said, only a portion of the pressing had this problem, so not all copies are bad.

    Happy New Year to everyone!

    Jose

So if you haven't opened yours up yet, get to it. Don't be one of those people who find out way later, when there are no longer replacements available.

  14. Update on the above post of the January LLLR titles:

We were going with House with a Clock on its Walls for Jan 8, but since it wont be in stock then, we decided to push it to Jan 22 along with the Orville launch (which we hope to make)

Superman will be late feb... early March.

Other Side of the Wind in Feb along with a 4 CD set of an awesome project.

Paramount wants the Bumblebee soundtrack out with home video release. Most likely March

I find this depressing. Keep hoping every year for more 80s cartoon material. Disney say no to DuckTales, and now Shuki Levy scores out of the question. Year in, year out. It's just sad. Huge swathes of material that can't come out.
  17. Various updates from La La Land Records from the last month.

    January 27, 2019:

    1. Fletch Lives some time this spring/summer
    2. No on Elseworlds
    3. Wish we could do Mannequin but the rights are convoluted
    4. Would sell my soul to release the Indy scores, but that will never happen.

  18. Thanks Justin...any news on Wyatt Earp? I've been waiting for that one from LLL to come back in stock for forever, but the shipping status has been stuck on "temporarily out of stock" for months-and-months-and-months. sad I'm wondering now if I should just give up on it.
  19. So, there is a new SUPERMAN the MOVIE (John Williams) edition coming up from La-La-Land, mastered by Mike Matessino. The product looks gorgeous. The first generation material used seems to improve over the already great sounding Blue Box edition. That is all fine and well, but it would still be the 4th CD set of the original recoding I'd buy. And I also have the fabulous Varese re-recording. It's so tempting, but 50 bucks for this extravaganza, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know ...

Really? I'm so glad there finally was a release of SUPERMAN, since - to my knowledge - no soundtrack has been released since 1978. It desperately needed a soundtrack release.

    tongue
    I am extremely serious.
  20. More various comments from MV over at the FSM forum for the rest of the month of February:

On when we'll get any Trek release (no title specified):
    Probably summer

On whether "Police Academy 2" is still possible:
    Hopefully some day

On whether they have any rejected scores coming (yes, I asked that one):
    Nope

On whether they might do the score to "City Beneath the Sea" (Richard LaSalle):
    Nope

On when "Fantastic Voyage" will be back on stock (website reads "Temporarily out of stock"):
    Never. It's out of print

    MV

(usually SOLD OUT is written across the cover of a title, so people know, but apparently they decided not to make any more)

    General comments:
We have a number of Fox projects lined up. As far as we know Dusney will honor all the contracts we have.

As for the Waxman titles Sony Music has decided to not do deals any more with all the labels so it does throw a monkey wrench into some plans. Hopefully things will change. We'll see

    MV

    On the Sony debacle:
Yes. We have 2 major projects pending but other than that the other titles we were looking into and/or started some work on were scrapped. The letter went out to all the labels

    TWO MULES this Summer

    MV

On whether they will re-issue "The Robe":
And no, we wont be reissuing it

    MV

    Out of print/re-stock notices:
Batman Forever is out of print. No chance of coming back out

The Danny elfman collection will be back sometime in March

And in regards to that, we're lucky we even get items re-stocked! He said it costs $7,000 or more just to re-press 500 copies! Holy fuck. He commented, either re-press or put the money toward a new title.

  21. What's Sony's problem?
  22. They are no longer licensing their catalogue to other labels.
http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website
  23. ...yes...I know. I mean why are they doing that. What's their problem, man?
  24. Sony noticed how Intrada and La-La-Land are making more money than Rockefeller and they decided to form their own Sony Classical Soundtracks label. Robert Townson will be in charge of that.

OK, all of the above is fake news. It's alternative facts.
