  3. Released today:

Quartet Records is proud to present expanded, ultimate editions of Philippe Sarde's masterful scores for two horror tales:

    GHOST STORY
    Music Composed by PHILIPPE SARDE
Produced, Remixed and Mastered by Mike Matessino
    Liner notes by Jeff Bond
    Limited edition of 3000 units

Quartet Records, Universal Pictures, Universal Music Group and Geffen Records present the long-requested expanded release of the masterful score by Philippe Sarde (THE TENANT, TESS, QUEST FOR FIRE, LES CHOSES DE LA VIE) for GHOST STORY, directed by John Irvin in 1981. Based on the 1979 novel by Peter Straub, the film stars Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman, Craig Wasson and Alice Krige. It follows a group of elderly businessmen in New England who gather to recount their involvement in a woman's death decades prior when one of them suspects her ghost has been haunting him.

One of the most outstanding features of GHOST STORY is the classic, evocative score by Philippe Sarde, without a doubt one of his most important works and one of the best soundtracks of the eighties. Using a melancholy, haunting main theme, a beautiful and obsessive love theme, and a gothic orchestration with some touches of Bartók and Stravinsky, Sarde was able to build a solid and coherent “symphony of horror.” The music was recorded with a large orchestra at Universal Studios Recording Stage, under the baton of Peter Knight, who also provided the orchestration.

This CD has been carefully produced, remixed and mastered by Mike Matessino from the original multi-track elements, courtesy of Universal Pictures. This new edition follows the composer’s original album concept as a “symphony of horror,” expanding the program with almost 20 minutes of unreleased music, including some key passages not included in the original MCA album. The package comes with a 24-page full-color booklet including detailed liner notes by film music writer Jeff Bond.

    Tracklist:

    THE TENANT
    Music Composed by PHILIPPE SARDE
Album Produced by Neil S. Bulk
    Remixed by Michael McDonald
    Mastered by Doug Schwartz
    Additional restoration by Chris Malone
    Liner notes by Stéphane Lerouge
    Limited edition of 2000 units

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures present the expanded, remastered edition of the iconic score by Philippe Sarde (GHOST STORY, LORD OF THE FLIES, PIRATES, CÉSAR ET ROSALIE) for a Roman Polanski horror tale THE TENANT. Based on the popular novel LE LOCATAIRE CHIMERIQUE by Roland Topor, the film was directed by Polanski, who also co-wrote the screenplay with his usual partner, Gérad Brach. It co-stars Isabelle Adjani, Melvyn Douglas, Shelley Winters and Jo Van Fleet. Although the film was given a cold reception at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976, over the years it has become a cult film, and one of the most valued in the career of the famous and controversial Polish director. THE TENANT was also Polanski's third production with Paramount after the classics ROSEMARY'S BABY and CHINATOWN.

One of the most important aspects of THE TENANT is that it was the first collaboration between Polanski and composer Philippe Sarde—who was only 28 years old when he composed the score. The music featured a complicated orchestration that required an unusual arrangement of the orchestra. The use of crystal harmonica gives the score a disturbing and bleak character.

Although the music was acclaimed and long desired by collectors around the world, it was necessary to wait until 2000 to have the score released by Universal Music France as part of its collection Ecoutez le cinema!, where it was paired with Tess, the second and brilliant collaboration between Sarde and Polanski. Now, thanks to the discovery of the original multi-track elements in the Paramount vaults, with access to the complete recording sessions at CTS, London, under the baton of Carlo Savina, the score of THE TENANT can be released in its entirety, including tracks not used in the final edit of the film, alternates, as well as the album-specific montages prepared by the composer for an MCA album that never materialized.

This CD has been produced by Neil S. Bulk, remixed by Michael McDonald at Private Island Sound, and mastered by Doug Schwartz, with additional restoration by Chris Malone, and approved by the composer. The package includes a 16-page full-color booklet with detailed liner notes by Stéphane Lerouge.

Note: THE TENANT is now available on CD, but it will be released also in vinyl by Quartet Records in October 2019.

STORY OF A WOMAN! I nagged James (Fitzpatrick) about it for a while, but he didn't seem that interested. It's also something that JW himself doesn't want out there (for some absurd reason), so he can't be faulted too much, I guess.

Basically, I'd love to see rerecordings of any unreleased Williams, Elfman and Goldenthal. Or if they're only about Golden Age, something by Franz Waxman; preferably a neatly arranged selection, not an overwhelming 3CD set of something.
    I am extremely serious.

Yes but not talking about them in advance any more. No hype. Nothing. Folks around here and other boards ruined the fun so the titles will just come out. Hope you guys like them.

  15. After people got worried about MV's comment about not knowing when the next release of titles will be ("May not have anything until February or March"), MV jumped in with some explanation and some hitns of things to come:

This is not a sky is falling approach. We just felt that, after doing this for 17 years, we need a little time to breathe and catch up on things in the beginning of the year....inventory, taxes, reorders of Out of Stock titles, etc...

After that last Black Friday batch you guys have enough great music to listen to for the next month or so.

We will most likely have something out last week of Jan...first week of February.

We may just do a batch of releases every 4 to 6 weeks. We understand that shipping costs are killing you guys, especially overseas, so we are trying to come up with an alternative plan that helps you guys out and keeps our lights on every month.

We have some fantastic titles in the pipeline. Lots of Universal stuff coming out -- expanded editions and never before released titles. We have a few remaining Fox titles still to come as well as stuff from Sony, Paramount. MGM, CBS and Warners. However, we don't know how many more Warner Bros titles will be coming out. New owners have caused new policies that may be cost prohibitive for all future planned and unplanned projects we have been working on/interested in. These things happen. We have been around long enough to see policy changes every 10 years.

In the meantime don't fret. We have some great titles coming from new and old composers. We plan on being around for a long long time.

    SUNFLOWER
    (50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)

    Music by HENRY MANCINI
    PRICE: 16,95€
    IN STOCK

In celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary, Quartet Records and Studiocanal present a new, entirely remastered edition of Henry Mancini’s timeless score for the 1970 Vittorio De Sica romantic classic SUNFLOWER.

The film is set mostly in the wake of World War II, and follows an Italian woman named Giovanna (Sophia Loren) as she searches across Russia for any trace of her vanished husband, Antonio (Marcello Mastroianni). What she discovers will change her life forever.

At the time he was asked to score SUNFLOWER, Henry Mancini (1924–1994) was already a film music legend. His unforgettable melodies for directors Blake Edwards and Stanley Donen had brought him international renown. For this film, Mancini produced one of his most beautiful and dramatic scores. Its twin love themes, capturing the rich flavors of both Italy and Russia, are exquisitely balanced between romantic longing and painful melancholy, while powerful themes for the characters’ journeys add depth and pathos. SUNFLOWER earned Mancini an Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Original Score, and inspired the hit song “Loss of Love,” with lyrics by Bob Merrill. It was especially successful in Japan, where Mancini’s celebrity rose to new heights.

The LP issued at the time of SUNFLOWER’S release was an incredible success, and has been reissued several times on CD (though always in Japan). Quartet Records issued the premiere release of the complete score in 2013 on a 2-CD set, with the remastered stereo album on disc one, while the second disc featured the complete score from the original recording that Mancini made at RCA Studios in Rome. Although that disc featured every note written by the composer for the film (including several cues that ultimately were not used in the final cut), the session tapes had been preserved only in mono sound. This new edition has been produced, restored and mastered by Chris Malone, and because the LP stereo program derived from the original film recording, we have included it first on our CD and added all the additional music composed by Mancini that was not on the LP to make a 70-minute CD, without the need to repeat the same cues in stereo and mono.

The package includes a 16-page, full-color booklet with liner notes and track-by-track analysis by film music writer John Takis.

    The Soundtrack Album (stereo)
    1. Love Theme from Sunflower (2:27)
    2. Masha’s Theme (1:57)
    3. Giovanna (1:56)
    4. The Search (4:21)
    5. Love in the Sands (Love Theme from Sunflower) (3:03)
    6. New Home in Moscow (1:20)
    7. Two Girls (2:10)
    8. The Retreat (5:11)
    9. The Invitation (2:06)
    10. Masha Finds Antonio (Masha’s Theme) (3:37)
    11. The Parting in Milan (Love Theme from Sunflower) (3:31)
    Additional Music (mono)
    12. Love Theme from Sunflower (Main Title) (2:27)
    13. Love in the Sands (extended) (4:27)
    14. The Wedding Night (4:19)
    15. Last Memories (0:31)
    16. The Photo of Antonio (0:37)
    17. The Search (extended) (5:02)
    18. Son of the Search (0:53)
    19. The Cemetery (0:32)
    20. Tu sei italiano? (1:24)
    21. Without Hopes (1:14)
    22. The Station (2:02)
    23. The Broken Photo (0:41)
    24. Giovanna’s New Life (film version) (0:58)
    25. The Visit of the Mamma (1:30)
    26. Antonio’s Flashback (0:46)
    27. The Appointment (1:19)
    28. End Titles (1:09)
    Bonus Tracks (mono)
    29. Love Theme from Sunflower (piano demo) (1:43)
    30. Loss of Love (song demo) (3:23)

This is essentially correct, and I have included in the revised liner notes a suggested track order for those who wish to program the full score in sequence. Everything from the film is still here, as are all of the unique album takes and edits; the only difference between this release and the last is that those stereo album tracks that are identical in content to their film equivalents have not been duplicated in mono this time, thus sparing the added expense of a second disc. Some, like Basil, may prefer the presentation of the original release -- but for all those who missed it, or who simply wish to enjoy Mr. Malone's new master, this is definitely a must-have!

  21. Some updates from La La Land Records and answers to questions over the months:

February 7 (on the FSM board):
If all goes well that 2020 backlog of delayed projects will be unclogged soon and a wealth of top titles will be seeing the light of day soon.

In the meantime we will do our damnedest to get more Harry Potter sets produced. It's not sold out. I repeat ITS NOT SOLD OUT...just OUT OF STOCK. Its just a pricey endeavor to make the packaging and manufacture the 7 cds at a third party finished goods rate, but we should have some more in stock by Summer.

I think Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea 4 cd set is getting low though and that WILL BE SOLD OUT once they are gone, so if you want one, now is the time to buy.

There is a slight delay on The World is Not Enough. The plant can't seem to find the paper so we are having more printed up now. Look for that to start shipping by months end. Same with Romancing the Stone and Invaders...delays on those have to deal with an industry wide short supply of poly-carbonate materials at the cd plant for the moment.

More Zimmer titles are being planned.

    A May 1, 2021 update on approvals:
We currently have 8 titles still waiting approvals at UME which has been going on for a long long time

    Two titles at Sony Music

    1 over at WMG

And a host of others all over town.

X-Men was the first title to get out of that UME log jam. Hopefully others will follow shortly.
