At the risk of repeating myself or anyone else who may have posted it before...

Since I saw Wibi Soerjadi in concert last night, I wanted to share some clips of music he arranged for piano from film music, which he plays impressively well of course.

Years ago he made a piano transcription of Gladiator. There are three pieces from Gladiator: Opening, Solitude and The Battle. In this transcription he uses the four hand technique, meaning (if I understand well) that both hands play both melody and chords? Here is a performance of The Battle:
    http://youtu.be/mGxdyM8C-1M

I just found out he has played the Lion King as well and I really really enjoy this one, especially the second half:
    http://youtu.be/IJGMJhZf3ec

Technically speaking not Zimmer, but he did Pirates, with two hand technique with just one hand. And a hook.
    http://youtu.be/LcsCG6Fgykc

So people who are interested can have a listen. I'd like to add that I think it's cool a classically trained concert pianist likes to do a cross-over, so to speak. Also with bands, like the song Blind for You by DiRect.

Also, Wibi composes as well and last night I heard Dance of Devotion for the first time. I'd say this is so very much inspired by film music! I really like it. Here's a short piece from the finale
    http://youtu.be/Igv4pHgcF4s

What he did in concert was take the theme (you can hear it in the clip above from 1:15 onward) and write nine variations on that theme. Since the theme is very film music like (I'd say RC!), the whole Dance of Devotion performance was great to me!

[this is a copy & paste of my report in the Ghent 2011 topic, just in case people look for news about Zimmer only, instead of reading the whole forum]

World Soundtrack Awards 2011 - press conference and concert

On saturday morning we were meeting up with the people from MainTitles at the Marriott. It was really nice to meet some people again and some people for the first time! It was really good. Then we went inside and took a seat in the press conference room. First Abel Korceniowski came in and had a seat. Then it took a while and you could feel everyone waiting in anticipation. People looking over their shoulder to the door to see if Hans Zimmer was arriving. Then the moment was there, we looked and a clump of people was slowly walking in, I guess somewhere in the middle of the clump was Hans Zimmer and then he took a seat as well. I joked to my husband that it was a bit like children waiting for Sinterklaas to enter. You know, nervously waiting and looking at the door and then Sinterklaas slowly walks in, with his Pieten around him and then children start singing. Well, we didn't sing, but there was applause when Hans walked in. Which, by the way, made me feel bad because no one applauded for Abel when he walked in! Which was painful I guess, looking back.

The press conference started although Goldenthal hadn't arrived yet... He sort of 'walked' in later on, too late and with sun glasses on, and I won't spend too many words on him, except two things: that I am very curious how the press will try to make sense of his answers writing the interviews down, that will be a hell of a job. Also, Maykel took some pictures of him at one point when we thought he had fallen asleep or had passed out. It was an embarrassing and painful appearance of Elliot Goldenthal.

I really really enjoyed the press conference when Hans Zimmer or Abel Korzeniowski were talking and most of the hour it was questions from the audience that were answered. Very nice. There were lots of laughs as well and some good questions and answers too. What I really love about Hans Zimmer is that whatever the question is, his answer is about passion for music, love for music and appreciation of the people he works with and people whose work he admires and so on. It is obvious that he loves what he does and he does not try to make things more complicated or more impressive. Very down to earth and honest. And very much with love for his work. He is a wonderful man.

Abel was kind of new and less experienced with these kind of things I guess, but he did well and I liked his answers. And he said he was looking forward to hear his music performed live by the orchestra, that was special to him and I'm glad he had that experience because it was a wonderful performance that evening. I'd like to thank Bregt and the people from Streaming Soundtracks to make it possible for me to attend this press conference. It was really great. It was my first actually and well, Hans Zimmer was there so that means a lot to me. Really!

When the press conference was over the composers walked out the room and then everyone else. We waited a bit but when we walked out we saw they were still there in the entrance hall, signing covers and doing interviews and things like that. Of course, where the crowd was, there was Mr Zimmer somewhere so I tried to go there but there were so many people around him! And then suddenly he had to leave, so that was that. I did not meet him personally. He did come back and Jordi caught him haha, but Hans really had to leave and he was taken away by someone of the Filmfestival I think and with his body guards... I was thinking, what if we had left the room earlier like most people did, but what if is just what if. No use thinking like that and I really enjoyed the press conference. I did meet Abel personally, although I must admit I had YouTube'd his score to A Single Man only the day before, to get an idea... In other words, I didn't know any of his music. Yet.

The concert was great. The location was not as bad as I expected from the outside. A concrete building made me wonder how any music could sound nice in there, but inside it was good. It looked great, it was warm, the light was nice and the sound was good! I'll skip some stuff and write the most important parts for me.

When Abel's Korceniowski's music started.... wow, it was beautiful. That score to A Single Man is great and this performance was very emotional to me. I thought, whatever happens next in this concert, no one can take this away from me anymore! It made the concert to a success for me already, no matter what had yet to come. After the intermission there was Goldenthal's music. His music didn't do much to me before, so I gave it another try, but still, it doesn't do anything to me. Then Howard Shore's music came and of course the highlight was Mount Doom. The first part of Mount Doom gave me goose bumps everywhere and tears in my eyes!! I've never been a fan of later part, the cheesy theme, when the ring is destroyed, but the first part: awesome!!!!! With choir and a wonderful soprano soloist.

So, then Hans Zimmer in concert. The 2011 concert was dedicated to Ronni Chasen, the agent / assistant who passed away last year and Hans chose to perform the first score she heard by him, Driving Miss Daisy, and the last score she heard by him, Inception, which was a beautiful thing to do.

Driving Miss Daisy was performed by a small ensemble with Hans on the piano of course and soloists on violin, clarinet en the drummer was beat boxing. Really nice. Then it was time for Inception. Perhaps I must add that when we sat down after the intermission we already noticed some… well, let’s say ‘equipment’ that wasn’t there before. Two laptops and synthesizers and more electronic stuff. Hans brought his own musicians and was going to perform on synthesizer and piano himself. So, everyone was ready, Hans at the synths, the orchestra ready to go, the solo musicians, conductor Dirk Brossé put on his headphones and there it goes. Some noise with deep bass was coming from the electronics filling the concert hall with anticipation (Half Remembered Dream) without the orchestra even playing anything yet. I think it was followed by We Built Our Own World, like on the album, slowly building up. Strings started to come in, still together with the electronic sounds and loud bass. I just sat there in awe, being impressed by the loudness and darkness of the music, knowing what had yet to come. Then the highlight for me started to fill the concert hall: The Dream is Collapsing. The build up of that track is so awesome on it’s own, just imagine what it’s like in a huge concert hall, feeling the bass in your stomach, strings come in, brass comes in and seeing Hans Zimmer on stage on synths. I thought I was going nuts inside. What a blast. And then some more, building up, getting louder and darker and bigger as it went along. I thought the whole world was collapsing!! I don’t remember what music from the album was played next because I was blown away by the opening and The Dream is Collapsing so much. I know of course Mombasa was there. Not my favorite track, but exciting to see performed live. I do know Waiting for a Train was there too, or at least the second half part where he the ¾ comes in and the song. Awesome track too. The finale was, needless to say, Time, with Hans on piano. Beautiful how it builds up and fades away.

I was very much impressed by this performance of Inception live and it was nothing like I expected. I mean, what do you expect? I expected an excellent orchestra performing music from Inception. I thought that would be it! But Hans wouldn’t be Hans if it wasn’t loud of course. So, he brought some good noise and it was a blast. Everything beyond my expectation. Orchestra mixed with synths, live on stage, with Hans Zimmer on stage and the typical Zimmer-loudness and awesomeness he brought put a smile on my face, the chills down my spine and tears in my eyes.

Looking back at the concert the highlights for me were definitely A Single Man, LOTR: Mount Doom and Inception.

A very nice report of Hans Zimmer in Ghent. The whole video is in German, including the interviews. But there are many clips from Hans at different locations in Ghent, including the concert and the press conference. Really nice!

    Thanks!

By the way, these clips were leading me to some other clips on YouTube, like this making of Inception:
    http://youtu.be/W1FIv7rFbv4

It is an older video so perhaps it was posted before. But I like what he says about the physical force of the brass section and what he says about the electronics too. Seeing this video after the concert makes me think he really tried to recreate that feeling in concert and succeeded too obviously! I love that.

It still amazes me. He just could have had the orchestra play Inception but he put the same idea and effort in the concert as in writing the score itself, to create the same effect as the music has with the movie. It truly was physical force for sure.

So thank you Hans Zimmer for this wonderful and complete experience. cheesy

So! What about this Film Music of Hans Zimmer Vol. 2 performed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra?

I'm listening to the clips now and don't know what to think. It seems like a weird selection, like in part 1 there is also music that's not by Hans Zimmer.

I've not read anything on the forum here about this release either... (but I wasn't here for a while, I know).

Well, I've just listened to Woad to Ruin from this compilation on YouTube and that's really... interesting! The same goes for 160 BPM. Funny enough these are two pieces I recently said to my hubby wouldn't it be nice to hear those live or something. So the orchestra and choir version is very interesting.

Does anyone have this compilation? Who did the selection?

Well, I am now listening to this music on YouTube with the headphones to get an idea and Woad to Ruin alone makes me want to have it. I love that track anyway.

Some pieces are good, some are different. Some are weird. To be continued...
