He has, he says, no interest in playing the Hollywood "game": winning an Oscar made no difference to his life (and, since he no longer submits his scores to the Academy, he won't be winning any more).

So will The Lion King have the honour of being his ONLY Oscar winner?

Then THEY MUST RELEASE IT ONE DAY!!!!

It looks like it, but frankly it's got nothing to do with him not submitting his scores (if that's even true). Since Gladiator's nomination, he has written the following "Music by Hans Zimmer" scores (ie I have excluded those which have above-the-title credit for another composer since they are automatically ineligible).

    The Simpsons Movie
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
    The Holiday
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
    The Da Vinci Code
    The Weather Man
    Madagascar
    Spanglish
    Shark Tale
    Thunderbirds
    King Arthur
    The Last Samurai
    Matchstick Men
    Tears of the Sun
    The Ring
    Black Hawk Down
    Riding in Cars with Boys
    Pearl Harbor
    Hannibal

Which of these scores, I wonder, would have been nominated for an Oscar, had they been submitted? My guess - none.

Da Vinci Code certainly had the potential IMO. Was it in 2003? Because then it had no chance against RoTK... tongue

Not that I have any problem with it, I want TLK to have a special recognised Zimmer score!! biggrin

Hannibal could get one for its intense, artistic, beautiful score which was still effectively frightening.
  1. Spanglish had a chance. Not only because of the quality of the score (my favorite Zimmer comedy), but also of the evident sympathy the Academy has for Brooks' movies.

Zimmer stop writing film music? Yeah, that will probably happen around the time female pornstars stop being into the male genitalia.

If "chuck it all in" means that from now on he´ll be more careful choosing his projects (either composing or producing), then it´s ok with me. No need for Zimmer to be involved in dozens of projects per year.

The Last Samurai ( a movie nominated to several oscars and probably the Zimmer scores with best reviews), BHD (Another oscar nominated movie, with another well reviewed score), Spanglish (Golden Globe nomination) or Matchstick man ( A well reviewed movie and score) could have been nominated for the academy award perfectly, as much he has nominated for scores like The Preacher's wife.

Riding In Cars With Boys was co-composed with Heitor Pereira, and Matchstick Men used Nino Rota theme, so both are also ineligible (I think).

I don't know? Unlike Da Vinci I have no idea what the story is about except that Tom Hanks plays the same character.

Will this be a film that requires music along the lines of Da Vinci?

It will also feature more action and suspense/cult styled music. If you don't worry about spoilers, read about the book here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angels_and_demons wink

(My favourite bit is Hans saying that the Prince songs date Batman badly and so were a mistake. Unlike Hans's 80s power anthem scores, which have never dated anything, of course.)

    I know... there's also Harry's and Klaus's and Ramin's!

Actually, I guess Zimmer singled-out Batman because it is meant to be a "timeless" type of film, and putting pop songs in it just dates it to the day it was made - but the same is pretty much true of all music in films, the same as it's true for costumes and set designs and even acting and editing techniques. Surely the music in Ben-Hur dates that film - but so do the costumes, the acting, and everything else. Some things date a film more badly than others (eg Batman is dated by the Prince songs a lot more than it is by its score) but the man who put 21st century Yamahas in ancient Rome, medieval England and 19th century Japan complaining about a film being dated by its music seems pretty ironic.

So true James. Many films are considered timeless, and they are, but even they date. Casablanca, King Kong, they're both considered "timeless masterpieces", which I'm sure they are, but they've sure as hell dated a lot too. (If only the same could be said of me.)

But then putting pop songs in films isn't always a bad idea (particularly if they are used to similiar effect that Robert Zemeckis and Oliver Stone have used them in their films). Back To The Future for example is a very 80s film, with very 80s pop songs in the soundtrack (and 50s and 60s). It's dated for sure, but it's dated well. It's a nostalgic reminder of the 80s rather than an embarrassing one.

Not an excuse, ever, to use pop songs in any film, imo. They absolutely s*CK 99% of times, 1% being all the Horner movie songs which are fabulous!
