Can anyone recommend any Rahman scores in the same style as "Couples Retreat" and the more romantic parts of "Slumdog Millionaire" - i.e. unashamedly saccharine and utilizing pop-style instrumentations?

I'd recommend LAGAAN and BOMBAY too.

    Thanks!!

  1. Jelly means jealous. Usually going with this face. There is also a version with "u mad?" or "problem?"

I recommend Couples Retreat, ridiculously entertaining.

Tough luck. He has few non-Indian works, and there are no score releases for his Indian projects (barring oddities like Bose).

The closest to Couples Retreat would be his best work in 2010-- the song & score to Jhootha Hi Sahi. The film bombed at the box-office. It was a romantic comedy with a lush, jazzy sound. There are some recording session tracks on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeKtjh1GFLk

He put up some score tracks from Jhootha Hi Sahi on his official FB page too. "Maiyya Yashoda theme" is quite fun, although short. smile

An excellent 60 minute showcase from BBC radio (lots of samples)-

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle presents a profile of the Indian composer who is a superstar on some continents yet virtually unknown on others. The Mozart of Madras features an exclusive interview with the usually publicity-shy composer. Other contributors include Meera Syal; lyricist Don Black; director of Elizabeth, Shekhar Kapur; star of Slumdog Millionaire Anil Kapoor; composer Craig Armstrong OBE; and Raj and Pablo from the BBC Asian Network.

"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" a score by Cyril Mockridge. It doesn't include the pop song sung by Gene Pitney. It is what you might expect a western score to sound like.

I really love the Muhammad score a lot. Undoubtedly one of the best albums from last year, for me. The themes, melodies, Middle Eastern parts (especially the oud bits) and large orchestral parts are absolutely delightful. The action cues really have him at his best and I'm addicted in particular to the first minute and a half of Abraha. Highly recommended.

  6. A lovely score indeed, probably my favorite that I've heard from Mr. Rahman. I was quite struck by how much the love theme sounded like Thomas Newman, though - if you played me "Limerence" or "Jeet Finds Alia" and told me it was from the third Best Exotic Marigold Hotel score, I'd believe you in a heartbeat. It's easy to blame that on Newman's own fondness for Indian regional instruments, but I think the melodic and harmonic sensibilities take after him as well. And it has a similar sort of delicate, ethereal, free-floating feel.

  7. I think you'll like it. Very smooth, very pleasant, nice concise album that doesn't waste a single one of its 45 minutes. And nary an action cue in sight!

Nice. Action music was never Rahman's forte to begin with. He can write some smokin' and energetic songs (especially back in the Bollywood days), but his strength lies with the broad, slower textures.
    I am extremely serious.
