The Phantom Menace - "Ultimate" Edition | John Williams

Yeah the edits and cuts are awful and shameful, but there's just too much great music on here not to listen to it. Absolutely brilliant music, my second favourite Star Wars score.

No kidding... I thought I'd throw on Rombi's "Ouverture" from Joyeux Noël.

    shocked

I've had this one in my collection since May 2006 and this is the first time I've played it! Absolutely mind blowing!

I'm enjoying this score immensely... even the Hans Zimmer/The Thin Red Line/Journey to the Line rip off cue, "La Guerre." However, I actually prefer Rombi's cue which which has a bit more punch and gets a powerful performance by the London Symphony.

NP: Music From the Harry Potter Films (John Williams & Patrick Doyle)

Stick with the original soundtrack recordings -- for your own sake. It may cost more money to get the individual soundtracks, but your ears will thank you later. I admire their determination with trying to replay the first four films' complex music via the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, but there are a number of problems. Namely, the recording (which sounds like a 50-60 piece orchestra rather than a large one) itself, the timing on some of the instruments are way off (particularly in the "Prisoner of Azkaban suite", where the beginning of "Buckbeak's Flight" sounds like the timpanist was slacking off) and plus, the players just can't seem to hit the right notes every single time. Compared to this, the Silva Screen CD for the POTC trilogy was much better.

A very, very fine score. In fact one of the best of the current decade according to one critic. wink

    Big Wednesday - Basil Poledouris

A good first symphonic score, with a main theme that sounds in part like a precursor to Lonesome Dove. There's some good variety here, the only downside being that the recording sounds godawful.
