You are right here. The truth is that, at least in Spain, nowadays children´s education / moral is very different (than it was when I was a child, and I am 31); I mean I have many friends who are teachers and all of them tell me the same: how difficult is to try to teach them. They are unrespectful, they have zero interest in learning, their knowledge of basics like maths and writing is awful, their interest in reading and culture in general is close to zero and their overall atitude is "I go to school just because they make me go". Their only goal is to reach the weekend, hang out with friends, get drunk and smoke whatever they get (not bad things per se, but very bad things if it´s the only goal they have). Really worrying and depressing. Actually a recent study revealed that Spain is at the bottom of the ranking regarding education (only over Greece, sorry Demetris wink ). A bit off topic, sorry, but may be related with the games / TV shows issue.

We could always start a topic on education and leave this one to the gamers. smile
There is much to say about education and upbringing these days and about the lack of meaning and moral directions in peoples life.

On a more positive note: the virtual world provides us with possibilities we can use to educate children in ways that will appeal to them, for instance playing with identity through profiles and such.

Did life ever have a meaning? I still think people aren't wearing enough hats.

Onto gaming, I haven't played a new console game in ages... I have a stack of GameCube and N64 games piled on my shelf that I haven't had time to play. But yes, that's where my boat floats: Nintendo does indeed rule. ^_^ I do, however, intend on catching up on all the Final Fantasys I missed since VII, one of these days.

But I've been overworking myself so damn much lately between work, theater, costumes and writing, that I feel I need a big huge break, and soon. I think in a couple of weeks I'll shut myself at home and play Civilization IV for a weekend straight. That usually gives me my fix. And yet I still haven't tried this game multi-player. Any takers?

There has been quite some research on the effects of these games (and certain TV shows). Of course a game can't be responsible for someone's actions, but it's all about influence. If kids play these games it would be good if someone talked with them about weapons and violence for instance.

It's not that a game can make someone do something, but it can create ideas of what is normal and what is not and some of those ideas are very wrong. If there is no moral education, then these games can cause problems. Especially with young children, who cannot make their minds up yet like we can.

Well I didn't elaborate on that as it's obvious games don't kill people or turn adolescents into aggressive little $h!ts. You said it very well, Bregje. It's up to the parents foremost to educate their kids about right and wrong. But if the parents are already mentally unstable, kids will just do as they please and think everything is permitted because, hey they can do it a game and totally get away with it, worst thing that happens is they lose a life and continue from a checkpoint.

It's just a problem with society these days where certain parents don't take the time anymore to educate their offspring, because life is just too hectic and values like respect and friendliness have to make way for aggression and violence, because society gets increasingly cynical and losing hope for the future, with all the bad things happening around us.

I'm an adult, I've played violent games all my life, but never did I have the urge to kill someone or pick a fight just for the kick. I know violence in a video game is something to be taken with a grain of salt. I've been brought up with values that mean something and when adults don't give a damn about those values, why should their kids when they have no example to follow.

People, what kills and harms people IS the killers' OWN STUPID, FUCKED UP HEAD. Humans always sought an excuse to lay the blame upon, since day one. Guns don't kill, violent games and tv don't kill, THE STUPID F*CKHEAD cretins with complexes and troubled, disturbed lives do! It's a bit off-topic in 2008 to still seek the blame in external factors, imo.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  3. Playing LOTRO, I finally made it to Weathertop. Even getting close to that huge hill and looking up to the massive ruins on top of it gave me shivers. Then, actually standing on top of it and taking a look around was a really great experience, but just in case I might get a Nazgul visit, I left in time before nightfall... smile Hell, Middle-Earth really comes alive in this game.

Quoted for truth, however the real fault lies with the media, who always points the finger at games and television. They still do it, I still remember that Fox news report about Mass Effect, jeez how insane was that, and that wasn't even about the violent behaviour in the game, which IMO there is none of I must add. A videogame has never (or very rarely) been reported in the media as being something good, innovative or educational, they only see the virtual guns and violence. crazy

True! I mean, I've been playing Hitman Silent Assassin and Blood Money for about 3 years now (I don't like Contracts), but I've never felt the urge to throttle someone with a fibre wire or shoot at a politician's car with an M195 rifle! tongue

Whoo, that sounds a bit black/white to me!
It's always a complex mix of personality and character (and how did someone become that way? Not just by himself!), circumstances, conditions, people in your life, experiences, everything. If it was that simple we could just medicate all fucked up people and all problems would be solved.

I agree, people kill, not weapons. But having a weapon means something. It means you have the opportunity to kill someone and some people think it's normal to have the means to kill people. Just like some people think it's normal to enjoy shooting people virtually. I don't agree. I know you don''t harm anyone that way. But those experiences shape your personality, your attitude. Maybe just very subtle but it does.

I wonder how people who think that violent games can do no harm to the user feel about virtual child porn. I read an interesting discussion about that a while ago. Some people think it can be a replacement of real children which is good. People who are against it argue that it does something to your personality, like saying it's OK, even though no child is harmed.

What I'm talking about is... Bildung. I don't know the words in English, the way you develop yourself, create yourself. It's about attitude, skills, ideas, character.

Damn! Tie Fighter and X-Wing, I remember buying Tie-Fighter on 3.5" floppies back in the day. The whole game installed on the hard drive took about 10 megs I think. Where has the time gone?

I occasionally play an old Mega Drive game out of nostalgia reasons, so who are you calling old-school? tongue

Here's a tapestry of my favourite games:

    http://www.musicalotaku.com/cgi-musical … app=bgames

Gha, it's been ages since I had a good gaming session... I'm going through gaming-withdrawal.

Ah, and on a side-note: I have select scores that match some of the games in my collection: whenever I play "Mystery of the Abbey" I play The Name of the Rose, whenever I play "Army of Darkness - The Board Game" I play the matching score, of course, whenever I play "Seafarers of Catan" or "Anno 1503" I play Pirates of the Caribbean, whenever I play "Caylus" I play Flesh + Blood, whenever I play "Taj Mahal" I play City of Joy, whenever I play any of many train-related games I play Silver Streak... Fun! spin

We used to have a monthly gaming group for "Catan", which really IS the best board game ever developed (besides Chess, of course). Beyond that, I play "Pillars of the Earth" and "Beowulf" with my daughter.

For "Catan", I used the music of David Arkenstone for a while. You should try that.
"Pillars of the Earth" is destined to be scored with "The Name of the Rose" or "Kingdom of Heaven", while "Beowulf" got the "13th Warrior" treatment and now, of course, "Beowulf" by Silvestri.

For now, on my solo list is Pro Evolution 8, I want to kick ass to however dare challenge my team

but, waiting anxiously to play Uncharted and Heanvely Sword amongst others smile

Catan's a classic, no question. But I'm a little jaded with it. It has too much of a luck element, something I'm always severely lacking. Stuff like "Puerto Rico" is more like my cup of tea. It's no wonder it's been voted as the #1 board game on www.boardgamegeek.com ever since it was released.

I liked "Pillars of the Earth", but not enough to buy it. I felt it was a little like a "Caylus"-wannabe. And hm, I don't know the "Beowulf" game. I should try that! Right now I'm trying to add "Yspahan" and "Stone Age" to my collection. I've greatly enjoyed the few games I played of either. I just wish I had more people in my direct vicinity with whom to play. sad

And did I have "Notre-Dame" in my tapestry? If not, it should be there. That's one of the hottest new game I've experienced in recent years. And no question which score I play when I get that game out!
