    SATURDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 2008

    AN EVENING EVENT

AT THE ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL, THE SOUTH BANK, LONDON

The Philharmonia Orchestra will perform together with guest musicians, including composer-pianist Crispin Merrell (Space Precinct, Lavender Castle and New Captain Scarlet).

    Timmer? Martijn? Alan?

What's the best cd to buy, with Thunderbirds music on it?

    This compilation:

Or one of these (or both) releases:

To be honest, aside from the stunning main theme (and its variations) I didn't enjoy any of these disks very much: sixties incidental TV music -unless extremely re-edited into listenable suites/cues - really isn't my thing unless i have a very strong connection with the show.

If memory serves, these issues are all in mono sound as well.

    Probably best!

As Martijn says, I think there needs to be a bit of a strong connection to the show to really enjoy all that Thunderbirds music. There's only a few cues that I listen to again and again.

You're better off with Space: 1999:

    What ?! What ?!
    You're skipping Barry Gray ?!
    I can't believe what I'm hearing ! crazy

    biggrin

    No seriously ...
    I personally love Barry Gray's music .
The Thunderbirds and Space:1999 OSTs are two of my absolute favourites of the many scores
Barry has written . Don't let the fact that some of this stuff is in mono withhold you from buying and enjoying these CDs . There have been Silva Screen releases with digital re-recordings of Barry Gray's music but I don't know if they're still available ... Buying a Thunderbirds compilation CD would be a good way to start Bregt ... but that's just my opinion ... wink

Yes, the compilation featuring music from Thunderbirds 1 & 2 is the way to go.

I adore Gray's music but yes, I may well have the rose tinted nostalgia glasses on.

Even so, Gray's originals pisses all over anything Hans Zimmer attempted with his sorry arse score for the film.

  1. It's one of Zimmer's worst works. Probably most of it was Ramin bunny

A few of us here in Adelaide Australia recently had a Barry Gray revival. Especially with UFO. We all watched the DVDs and totally lapped up Barry Gray's wonderful score for that show!
It was pure geeky bliss! dizzy

I'm certainly waiting for someone to release some of Gray's music to UFO. I'm sure that it will be another "acquired taste" experience (through unlikely to surpass his efforts in Space: 1999).

I prefer UFO but yeah it is an acquired taste. Silva was slated to do it but that was some years ago now. slant

There's enough "new" material on this one to make this an essential purchase for me though I'll wait for the CD release rather than download.

  3. Cheers for the information, Tim. Looks like there are a few quality tracks that have - so far - been unavailable.

  5. I noticed this over on the FSM messageboard:

Fanderson - The Official Gerry Anderson Appreciation Society - is releasing a 2-CD set of music from Stingray. I'm not sure if anyone is a member of Fanderson, but this set is available only to members.

I've been over to Silva Screen and listened to the clips from the new Barry Gray compilation. Other than the stuff I already have (Joe 90, Space: 1999, Captain Scarlet, etc) tracks from U.F.O. were the only ones that grabbed me.

Glad to get "clean" versions of the opening and end titles as well as hearing the theme variations in "S.H.A.D.O. - Variations On A Theme". I only wanted these 3 tracks so I just downloaded them.

BTW, the end titles theme is one of the scariest musical endings to a programme I can remember from my childhood and I always waited until the end of the programme to hear it - and hope there was no interruption from a continuity announcer.
