British film director and writer Anthony Minghella has died aged 54.

Minghella's films included The English Patient - which earned him an Oscar for best director in 1997 - as well as Truly, Madly, Deeply and Cold Mountain.

He had an operation for a growth in his neck last week and the operation seemed to have gone well. But he had a fatal haemorrhage at 0500 GMT on Monday.

Very sad story and a very abrupt end. There's more at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7302841.stm

May his soul rest in Peace.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Yes, I mentioned this in the Gabriel Yared thread earlier on today since ironically I had just mentioned that Minghella's new film is premiering on BBC this weekend (with Yared score).

I did like his films, a talented man.

I was very sad to hear this, the man was a talented film maker who's given me plenty of joy, not least in his choice of composer.

    54 is damned young. sad

  1. 54 is indeed too young to pass on, sad sad
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  2. "Truly Madly Deeply" was a lovely, sad film, featuring a great performance by Alan Rickman, and a gorgeous cello-based score by Barrington Pheloung. Overlooked gems, both.

    It is indeed!!

I hadn't realised that he had had recent surgery for cancer of the tonsils. Sounds like there were post-surgical complications - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7302841.stm

I hadn't really followed many of his movies but reading the tributes that are around, he was obviously a great talent who will be sorely missed in an industry that is all too short in "great talent".

  4. Very sad. He was a Romantic film-maker with a capital R, a great character from what I've read about him, and he loved music. My condolences to his family. sad
